Granted, he's no John McSherry, Paddy Keenan of Jarlath Henderson when it comes to playing the pipes, but he's one of the most versatile in the Irish folk scene and one of the best flute players in the business.
I'm no expert on these things, but wouldn't the drones get kinda lost here? I mean sure, if the pipes were further forward in the mix, and the accompaniment was paired down a bit maybe, but with so many fine musicians to provide the backing that drones and regulators are so good for, my guess is that they were deemed to be a bit superfluous at the time. I love the pipes too, and prefer to hear them in all their haunting natural glory, but they certainly add something 'otherworldly' (?) to a big session like this too, wouldn't you agree? I wish I'd been there, (sigh!-)
