I learnt that divorce court always gives custody of kids to the female spouses no matter how terrible they behaved or acted; even when it has been proven that they were in the wrong or cause of the divorce filing. Second thing I learnt is being alone is powerful;

I still miss my ex at times (she divorced me), but the kids are raised and I love the freedom to do whatever I want with my time and money without having to negotiate. And, with child support done with, I've even more money. I have no desire to be married ever again. You can't really replace the past anyway, and it can be dangerous to try (I've learned that too.)

They eventually try to rope you in, or they turn you away, and doing that over and over is a waste of time. I got very lucky with both of my divorces that I was able to come out on top. Put in safety measures just in case like prenup, separate bank accounts, and thank god I listened to my gut and didn’t have kids with my last one. Anytime I get a young soldier who is even thinking about getting married I give him a verbal counseling on what he is getting into, some of the consequences if the marriage fails, and the percentage of a marriage actually working especially at a young age (during deployments that percentage doubles). Some have listened to my warning and thanked me while others didn’t and paid the price.

If you have your health and determination you can start over in less time than you imagine...... on the plus side I've found out how strong and resilient I am. A friend of mine, here in Australia, amicably divorced his wife and the lawyer only charged $3000 to ensure that all the bases were covered and all the required paperwork was done. My Dad and Step-mom came away from their divorce fairly well off too. I have the impression that American divorces are grossly expensive because their lawyers are grossly expensive. But divorce lawyers are just as much evaluating the portion the lawyers will keep in the form of fees. the lawyers will then litigate the case to run up the fees to the point of that portion the lawyer wanted for himself from the start. In other words, the lawyers are not working for the benefit of the client but simply to benefit the lawyer. This is not a cynical comment; this is how it is done.

If there is only one house, the man is put in front of the door and his ex-wife and children receive half of his salary as alimony. The man has the right to see his children once a week, but his ex-wife can claim that he has been violent towards her and have him removed. If his ex-wife doesn't marry, she can continue to receive alimony until she dies. In the meantime, she may be with other men or even be engaged. It just doesn't have to be officially married.
