I just wanted to say that I sincerely appreciated the time you spent putting this video together! I recently bought a Tigertronic USB and I am planning to start my introduction to PSK31 with Digipan because of your excellent video!!! 73s WD9GNG
Thanks for the compliments! I know you'll enjoy PSK31. I've moved on to other software, but still keep Digipan on my PC and use it from time to time. Still a great program!. 73... Joe
Thanks for the walk-through, very helpful. As a new ham, it's nice to find a video to cover operations without having to "fudge" through it myself to figure out the basics. 73 de KB1ZNZ
Very helpful. I just began getting my feet wet this year with digital modes. After I play with RTTY & SSTV for a while , I will sure give PSK31 a try, thanks for the tour.
Glad you enjoyed the video. I'm now active on PSK from Washington State, using 10 watts and a magnetic loop antenna. Hope to work you on the air sometime!
Many many thanks for this video Joe. I am returning to amateur radio after several years of not being able to have antennae. I’m a secretary by trade so digital modes are perfect for me. Thanks again de G0ZZA 88s
I'm glad it helped you. I worked in data entry for about 25 years, and feel the same way about the digital modes as you do! I'm in a antenna restricted development, so I'm lucky to have a vertical and a magnetic loop. 73... Joe
Thanks for the compliments on the video. I'm glad i was able to help you out. I've never used the Rigblaster Advantage (have a Rigblaster Nomic that I use with Echolink). 73...
Thanks for the help here..Bookmarked this for future senior moments. Digipan is not that daunting, but your video makes it easier to get up and running and avoid the LID signature if I grapple with this on my own.KC4MOP
I'm glad you found it helpful, Simon. Thanks for the nice comments. WHEN I GET TIME (grin) I plan to try a "intro to MixW" and maybe "Intro to FLDIIGI" at some point in the future. These are both very good PSK and multi-mode programs. 73, Joe
Greetings, I know this is a very old RUclips, but it sure helps. I'm trying to get this Mode up and running. I know FT8, and now FT4 is where most of the activity is, but there still ought to be some traffic on PSK31. Thanks.
Thanks for the compliments. I'm glad I helped you out. We were all at "square one" once! PSK is one of my favorite modes. In a few months (maybe less) I hope to post a video on how to use Fldigi (another excellent program for MANY digital modes). 73...de WD4KAV
A neat thing is pskreporter, which will show where your signal was received in the states/world immediately after calling cq. A confirmation that your signal was heard.
I'm glad I was able to help, Bill. I made this quite a while back, and guess I should really take a stab at making a video of some of the newer software sometime. Grin. If you have any more questions, just drop me a e-mail to my address on QRZ.COM. 73... Joe
Thanks for that demonstration. I am a new HAM and new to digital modes. I've been using Fldigi and have been frustrated by a lack of English speaking operators while I have been looking for QSO's. I'm uncertain if I'm simply operating at the wrong time of day or don't have the correct configuration. Recently I bought a Wophhilink external sound card. Wophhilink offers dedicated PSK31 software written by the builder specifically for his device and specifically for use on an Android tablet. Even running this dedicated setup and running on 14.070 or 14.074 or 14.078 I have yet to find English only operators. As I said, It's been frustrating. I will just have to keep trying until I'm successful.
I'm glad the video helped. As far as finding English operators goes, I suspect it's just a matter of waiting for better propagation. Once the sunspot cycle improves, you'll probably have no problems! 73, Joe
***** Thanks for the compliments. I plan to do a short video on how to set up FLDIGI but it may be a while, since I've moved from my previous QTH and am still getting set up.
Thank you for the video about psk31. I am new to Ham radio and I search for my first (cheap) transceiver. However every day i discover new ways to exchange information. SDR between them. Now I see also PSK31. All this makes me quite nervous about spending money for a transceiver that "tomorrow" will lost its value. HF transmittions are getting few every year, especialy broadcasting stations and this makes things worse.
I used to use Digipan years ago, just getting active again on HF I picked up a Ic-7300 is there a version that has the IC-7300 listing in the setup so it will work? I tried it and it will receive but not key the rig. I am using Ham Radio Deluxe but that is way more complicated than Digipan.
At about 24 min you say that you have it automatically set to save to the log when you send your 73's. How is this done? I did not see a macro for this.
+Dennis Baldridge Hello Dennis. The macro command you need is not listed in the macros shown in the program, for some reason. The macro command is Here is a link to the complete macro list..... www.qsl.net/wm2u/digipan20_macro-commands.html 73... Joe WD4KAV
Nope, it's the Digipan UI. I was running it in XP when I made the video, but it also runs in win 7 (32 bit and 64 bit)..and looks the same. You'd probably have to put Digipan in XP compatibility mode to make it run properly in Win 7.
PSK31 has been a nightmare. And Digipan was supposed to be the oldest and simplest SDR to use. Are you kidding me? Who designs this software? I connect my KX3 and PX3 with Signalink, with the internal jumpers properly configured with the external wires properly connected, and I get constant transmission if I play a You Tube video, or if I make a simple CQ. I have to go to T/R and switch to R to turn off the transmission, long after my CQ has been sent. And instructions are so scattered throughout multiple RUclips videos, and the Nifty E-Z Guide to PSK-31, etc. Operation is so disjointed that it too is useless. Useless, needless complexity and completely devoid of any logical thought process in the design. Is the problem with a Lenovo computer running Windows 10 having its sound card (RealTek High definition audio/ USB Audio Codec/Intel R display Audio) conflicting with SignaLink? I have my KX3 running 6 watts on an Alex Loop at 7.030 Mhz with a SWR of 1.0 . I then tried to take a look at FLdigi, and it is even worse. And as a retired doctor , I thought Electronic Medical Records and Electronic Hospital Records were bad, but even as an Extra, this SDR is chaos.
Not useful to a novice. You refer to procedures that are essential but I have no idea how to do this. Obviously useful for people in the know. I'll look elsewhere.
Thank you. This was an indispensable video in helping me get started with PSK-31.
Thanks for the good overview of PSK31! 7 3
Glad you enjoyed it, John. If you ever run Into me on the air, give me a call. I'm on just about all digital modes now, but only on 20 meters. 73, Joe
I just got everything soldered up and ran digipan only to find out I don't know how to use it. This was a GREAT video. Thanks for posting...KB9JZK
Outstanding video, thank you very much for taking the time to help new digital mode users. I wish all tutorials were this good.

Digipan is no longer being developed (it's been "dead" for probably 20 years). I'm not aware of any way to make it work with modern rigs.
@@joeburnham5437 Thank you for the heads up. I will try and learn some of the new software. I do not do change well, I am a old man
As a newbie, where do the signal reports come into it? How do you give them a signal report?
Mostly it is down to your choice. Standard is 599 but 579 can be reported if you have a weak signal but can still read the text.

Yes, though it's not as common as a few years ago. It still works fine, and is one of the easier ways to get going on PSK..
