015 Sardis

This video log describes the short journey from the ancient city of Thyatira to Sardis in the Izmir province of modern Turkey. Sardis is the fifth of seven cities that John the apostle wrote letters to in the Book of Revelation. This video log explains the history of Sardis from the time it was the capital of the Lydian kingdom, and during the conquest of the Persian Empire, the Greek Empire, and the Roman Empire, including the Byzantine era from the forth to seventh centuries AD. This video log also shows and describes some of the significant ruins that have been excavated, including the Roman roadway, the Roman arch, the Jewish synagogue, the bath and gymnasium complex and the public latrines.
