Place a rail and an iron fence next to it. Place the cart on the rail and push it against the fence. Then it's between the 2 blocks and both minecarts below will pick up items.
Not sure how yours just works first try at 7:11 . It seems literally impossible for me to do the tricky part here. I've tried almost fifty times and it's very aggravating.
I often need a couple of attempts myself :) I add an extra row of blocks, crouch and try to hit the corner of the minecart. There must be an easier (or rather more reliable) way to do this, but I'm not a minecart wiz I'm afraid :-\

How do you place the upper hopper minecart in the 8x variant so that it is over both the lower two?
