The AIs are likely given a chopped up version of the map information, like distances and positions rather than actually the map, and the controls are likely the AI commanding a path finder to go to a certain location, everything else was 100% the AIs doing it

@palomaelegante how it works is by giving a list of accessible areas, and then the AIs pick one, plus, they're really smart AIs, they have been trained on that even before playing the game, they know the layout of the ship
