My father passed but all his work was from the first ftm. I got this to read his work but there so he left out from the present day. Got this one so the info wasnt lost. These videos were so helpful.
Oh wow, I have been using FamilyTreeMaker for so very long and never knew about the color coding, I had wondered about how you got those colors, thought you were just super geeky [a good thing!]. Brilliant, and then if you add the descendants, the lines will show multiple colors to show which lines. Amazing.
Hi Larry! I just set up my FTM 2019, and I’m reviewing your series to plan out where I want to start. (Thank you!!) I was wondering if there is a place where I can enter the Family Search IDs, or if you have to wait for FS download. Also, when I synced my Ancestry tree, I got colored hearts ... of course I had to change two colors because they didn’t match FTMs set. Thanks again for all you do, and I look forward to your response on ID numbers. (I have not yet connected my FS account)
Thanks for the video, very useful as always. I have a family I look after whose DNA match shows them as close family, not brother and sister. The sister has a second cousin that the brother does not have in their match list. I think the father may be different. I have watched your other videos on clustering, centimorgans etc. But am struggling to identify the exact person who may be the dad from looking at her other matches trees. If you can do any more videos on this subject, that would be great, or point me in the right direction! Thanks Teresa
+Roxi Smith it synchronizes the changes U make a change in ancestry and nine in ftm you sync and get them downloaded if I change local it syncs up. Do on both it does both
i dont know if u can go straight from 5 to 2019, you might have to do a middle conversion. Youll need to ask Mackieve support on that one. I know FTM had a required upgrade at one point, and i dont remember if it was after 5 or before.
In the FTM version 2012, was I believe the first time you could connect your FTM to Ancestry. What happened though is that when I did that, Ancestry didn't just add those I did NOT have in my FTM files, but copied EVERYONE in my tree on both ancestry and FTM and I ended up, with spending the next TWO YEARS un-doubling everything and getting my records correct again, and have NOT attached it since....FTM 2019 looks really sweet, and I like the color coding for lines of the family, BUT also means you would have to Connect my offline FTM to online internet, and after the last time, not sure I went to go though all that again.... wondering if it would be better IF I set up another Family tree, using JUST me, and then connecting to online with Ancestry... does that makes sense??
There were definitely some buggy versions along the way. Even as recently as 2017 version it did some squirrely things with sourcing, however, the benefit of the help it has given always outweighed the issues and with the backup and ROLL BACK features it has never been better to use than now. That said, i keep a "good" version backed up every so often "just in case" which can always be made into a new ancestry tree if something glitchy happens.
i use it A) as a backup, B) i can put things in FTM into a tree "copy" to work on for searching easier. i mean u can go to tree view mode, click search and it auto fills information but then going to look at next person, back to tree if u want auto fill, with FTM its much easier/faster in my opinion to work through large groups. then you have the printing abilities, to share with others you dont ahve on ancestry. You have the ability to search familysearch.org as well as ancestry at the same time with the same ease. Ancestry doesnt click back to family search so you miss that functionality. C) color coding lines that show up in tree format not just in dna matches really helps. i have surnames in my tree that are similar in name but unrelated, so haveing them show on list on left for colors really helps save time looking to see if in the line i am researching or not, D) drag and drop multiple photos/documents into FTM to sync is easier to upload to ancestry. E) just more tools in the program than the online application. Like you i have ancestry full sub too. I like it as well because it has things FTM doesnt, A) thrulines, B) DNA matches, C) rich database that is constantly update. D) a messaging system (albeit weak one) but collaboration and contact is possible. FTM was owned by ancestry for years and years then sold it off not to many years ago to mackiev. It was made to be a desktop integration. Ancestry decided to do online only, mackiev took over the application. Both have many unique and useful features and they also integrate and sync trees. Hope this helps
i typically link them to someone as a parent, then detach them from that person this puts them in as an orphan from which i can then build a tree off of thats not connected. That help?
Hi enjoy your vids, Especially the DNA portions, My Mom and Aunt were adopted. we met who we thought was our Grandfather when we were fairly young, about 30 years ago my mom wanted to find her birth Mother, Back when Compu serve, Prodigy, AOL were just becoming the craze (I even beta tested AOL and Prodigy before they hit the market. So anyway after about a year and half search found her mother, My Mom and Dad met her before she passed away but I never did, have talked to other Half aunts and Uncles since then, So about 5 years ago I took a DNA test, verified that the Mother we found was my Mom's Mom, but could never verify the father side, until recently a 1st cousin 1r showed up on FTdna, which after several hoops verified several connections on Ancestry that showed up as 2nd cousin matches over the years. Which doesn't match any of the other 3 Great grand parent pairs. so Disproves that the birth Grandfather we were always told is not him. Now the fun part, only two have responded, and the close connection removed or hid his results on FTdna, the first that responded wasn't even sure who her father was but had been told, so with my results and research we figured out her half sister and father and verified who she was told her father was. The gentlemen had no info on the family but could confirm his father and therefore from records his grandparents. My mom has passed, my birth grandmother has passed., so may never know which of the brothers is my Birth grandfather, right now can confirm a few that are not.
+Douglas Husemann howdy Douglass I believe we are Facebook friends and your related to either family two or three lol The dna surprise is still new enough I still have problems processing as I committed family two to heart Hope your feeling well Larry

Glad it was helpful! will be doing a series on FTM again soon!
Thanks for your time and energy Larry! Much appreciated.
Thank you for taking the time to watch! Hope they help
Thanks for your videos. I always learn something new.
Glad to hear it!
Color coding also gives you a hint when your two lines marry. My Mary Perkins and Thomas Wells mariage join my grandparents family back in 1669.
+June Butka exactly right!
Page 32 in the FTM 2019 manual says that the filled hint icon for Family Search is for hints for historical records that are found at the FS site.
yes. The blue box is a hint on FS, Blue box filled appears to mean person is linked to FS sight.
Does Family Tree Maker have the Ancestry DNA to show centimorgans etc.
Not at this time, FTM does not have a DNA component integrated into it

What is the cms of the close match?
@@DNAFamilyTrees 222 CMS.
So since it integrates with ancestry, does it duplicate the information or do you have to merge?
+Roxi Smith it synchronizes the changes
U make a change in ancestry and nine in ftm you sync and get them downloaded if I change local it syncs up. Do on both it does both
will this tree do GREEK ancestry, or is it only for US
The logs ancestor connectivity so I don’t see a reason it would work for all
Not sure if it has a Greek language pack for headings but it should work
My mother started with FTM 5. Can I import that version into FTM 2019? Is there a conversion module? Any help wou;ld be appreciated.
i dont know if u can go straight from 5 to 2019, you might have to do a middle conversion. Youll need to ask Mackieve support on that one. I know FTM had a required upgrade at one point, and i dont remember if it was after 5 or before.

Would love to have 23andme video about the new familytree builder.
ill have to get a 23andme test done :) Ill do that soon and maybe do a walk through beginning to end on it and results as well as a comparison
What am I missing? Why have info on Ancestry.com (am a subscribed member) and Family Tree Maker? Isn't that just a duplicate?
i use it A) as a backup, B) i can put things in FTM into a tree "copy" to work on for searching easier. i mean u can go to tree view mode, click search and it auto fills information but then going to look at next person, back to tree if u want auto fill, with FTM its much easier/faster in my opinion to work through large groups. then you have the printing abilities, to share with others you dont ahve on ancestry. Thanks! I downloaded it, and Am loving it.
How do you create a person that you know is in your family but dont know where to link them until you find out where to link them
i typically link them to someone as a parent, then detach them from that person this puts them in as an orphan from which i can then build a tree off of thats not connected.

@@DNAFamilyTrees In Family Tree Maker there is an option under Person > Add a Person > Add unrelated person
