Love gates. I'm from Southern California and when I went to KCMO to see the Chiefs play I had to try gates. I'll never forgot, when I walked inside, the smell almost made me fall over, it was that damn good.
I've only been to Kansas city twice the first time I went I went to a royals ballgame I went to gates, afterwards boy was that the best barbecue I ever had now I never got till 30 years later and I went to gates because I knew they are the best and after a 30 year absence they didn't disappoint 😊 it is the go to BBQ place in Kansas city hands down !

I was born and raised in Kansas City Missouri I am from 51st and park but now I live in Boston and every time I go back home the first place that I stop when I get off the plane is Gates BBQ 🍖 Gates is the best BBQ restaurant in the world 🌎 & the Gates BBQ sauce is the best to I highly recommend if you ever stop in Kansas City Missouri to eat at Gates BBQ . 👍🏿🧢🎩👑
Native of Kansas side, 10th and Cleveland! You DEFINITELY know what time it is whenever we travel home: GATES is first stop before we see our people and the last stop before we get to KCI to fly out. I *always* bring back food!! 👍🏽👍🏽
Was visiting Kansas City for business last century and a college suggested Gates. Gah-lee! I've been eating nothing but KC style ribs ever since. No cumin, no ribs!
My dad was a firefighter in Leawood and ran multiple calls to the state line location. My mom always said that if he let it burn down she would divorce him, it’s a blessing he didn’t work in independence 😂
same story. 47th and Paseo. smokin smell comes through my passenger window and caused me to have a wreck on 47th street...got a poor Russ sandwich out of the deal.
I.ll be there this weekend someone suggested Gates is it a touristy place? where u travel to a place go to what it's known for charge u a lot then give u small portions or do I need to go more in hood somebody reply
Gates is not a tourist trap. It's a place beloved and patronized by locals you get generous portions. BBQ in general is pricey and hit or miss. Some steers and hogs are simply ornery despite how you prep or cook them, this isn't widgets, its flesh. Some more fatty, drier, or gristly than others. That said more often than not Gates hits a home run. Don't leave town without trying it several times if possible. It's one of our top five KC BBQ joints. LC's BBQ despite being a hole in the wall has excellent BBQ too, and I love their fries. Q39 is relatively more upscale, and has excellent BBQ as well. Jack Stack BBQ is another local favorite with excellent smoked meats. KC Joe's (formerly Oklahoma Joe's) is also pretty good and a local favorite. Arthur Bryant's deserves honorable mention because many people love it and you typically get a lot for your money, but I'm not a fan of their ham or sauce. If I could only choose one I'd pick Gates. Their BBQ sauce puts them over the top for me, but their meats are so flavorful you won't need it.
I used to love them until i started going Jack Stacks.....if u go to Gates don't go to the one on 10th and state ave in KCK....I had hair in my food and one time they couldn't get my beef on bun right it was tuff as leather and they wouldn't give me a refund
Thats my grandma the one who is greating the people she been working there since 2008 and she still works there 2020 today right now.

I love the Gates location in Independence even before the original spot burned down! The replacement is just as great!
Love Gates. When I come home I have to get Gates. Before I leave I get more to bring back.

It's 2018 .... Stop it with the fake 1980s t/v voice
The have best Memphis don’t have no good bbq
No pepper at the table only salt
interesting!
Hickory is fine for brisket, but it is too strong for pork. Fruitwood is much better. Apple in particular.
