just quick Q, did you use any kind of stabilizer / gimbal / slider when you took this video? im interested of film making recently and still looking for worth to buy video cam.
Started filming with a 5dmk3 after buying it mostly for photgraphy purposes, eventually bought an a7s last week, love the a7 leagues above the 5d for film but ill still keep the 5d for studio photography work.
Beautiful! Is the water slow mo scene in 720p? Just wondering, I think this camera is amazing and i'm glad i didn't waste my money on the GH4. I would of been upset after what I've seen so far. Its a great tool but for my needs the Sony gods have fulfilled my dreams. I hope they discover 10bit from the Shogun, then we can really push this amazing sensor.
Hi Matthew, can you please clarify something for me? In the video description, you say "It was shot mostly in the Cine 1 picture profile with an additional few shots in the cine 7 profile (s-log2)". Do you mean PP1 and PP7? I'm not sure since Cine 1 is the default gamma setting for PP5, but you referred to it as the "Cine 1 picture profile". Beautiful footage and grade, either way. Thanks!
Absolutely incredible what you can do with 8 bit footage! I am curious how far could you push the image in post before you noticed intense footage degradation? Also, would you recommend this over BMCC & Panasonic GH4 for run-&-gun style shooting?
I didn't try pushing the image super hard in post, but you don't really need to. The images that come out of the camera are great, and even with s-log and adding a curve back into it I don't notice any degradation of the image or moire. I've shot with all 3 cameras and the a7s is my go to camera now. It's just as small as the GH4 and has so much more capability, unless you need internal 4k for some reason.
Le Chiffre The idiom "Run & Gun" refers to portability of the rig and ease of use with limited resources. But yes, rolling shutter is a malevolent pain in the ass. It will be something that low budget filmmakers and videographers have to endure for several more years :/
Haha oh, I just started my first research foray into camera and equipment. and oh.... my... god... so much to learn as a newborn baby to the camera world..... In fact I just learned of rolling shutter yesterday and I was like oh my god I don't want that. that sucks lol. it seems like the GH4 would actually be a better buy but the sony just looks so much nicer and the GH4 looks like a tonka a toy. However it seems like all full frame body's have this issue?
Great video. Found the link from the comment you posted on bloom's article. Do you do any photo work also? I have a business where I do both photo and video for events and businesses. Looking to sell my 5d3 and lenses to acquire the a7s. I already have an a7. How well is the 70-200 working for you with the adapter? Is auto focus even worth using through the adaptor? I have heard it is extremely slow. Thanks!
Unfortunately the autofocus is basically useless with the canon lenses. I do shoot a lot of stills. I find that if I just get in the mindset of treating it like an old manual film camera I don't miss the autofocus.
Hey Matthew, I'm thinking of switching from my 5d mk iii to the a7s but my only fear is that the rolling shutter issues seem to be pretty heavy. I shoot with a lot of camera support (shoulder rig, glidecam hd 2000, tripods). After shooting with the camera have you noticed any severe rolling shutter issues?
Doinkleful I recently got an a7s and I'm working around the rolling shutter. I have a shoulder rig and I never see it when I'm walking around. If you're holding the camera with just your hands and nothing attached to it, you might see it wobble if you're shooting on a 50mm or longer. If you're planning out your shots and not doing reality tv style quick pans, you should be able to avoid it. It's not a video camera for following your kid around in the park. If you want to do that, you might want to bring something for stabilization. When I'm shooting with this, I'm aware of the rolling shutter issue. I have adjusted my technique in order to achieve the results I want. It's a big learning process and I'm finding that I needed to learn these better, more deliberate moves anyway.
It's not noticeably worse than the 5D's rolling shutter. I shoot hand held with it all the time. Also great for gimbal or glide cam work. You can shoot in aps-c mod if you want and that will greatly reduce the rolling shutter.
man looks amazing, I just got the camera and have been having trouble converting the slow-motion. I was using 3rd party software to bring it in then cinema tools to change to 24p, but it would skip the files for some reason. Is there a better way?
I edit in premier so I don't need to use cinema tools. Just right click on a clip and choose interpret footage and change the frame rate to 23.98. Works great.
Hi, I answered the lens question somewhere below this comment when the video was first posted, which is why I haven't responded every time someone asked... But it was the canon 70-200 2.8L and the Canon 16-35 2.8L. Hope that helps.
I really want to get this camera, but I'm so unfamiliar with the Sony lens line-up. Should I just buy a lens adapter and get some canon lenses? Which one do you use? Even though I don't use it that much, I know auto-focus is basically non-existent with an adapter, so I was wondering if I were to buy one Sony lens, which should I get? I'm a video person, but I'd also like to shoot stills. Also, have you shot with this in bright daylight yet? Because if you do, and use and ND filter, which do you recommend?
I've done the same but bought a EF Samyang cine lens kit as I specialise in video. Some nice canon L-series lenses would be great, you'd need to get a metabones adaptor but read up on them as some have electronic issues.
Yes you did really well it looks amazing. So if I want to buy a camera for shooting videos (short film project and such) would you recommend this? Thanks!
They're both nice cameras, I like the a7s better though. More dynamic range and more film like picture. I;ve had multiple friends sell their GH4's after using the a7s. Also lowlight capability isn't even close to the same league on the GH4, and the a7s is full frame. It's also $1000 more, so you get what you pay for.
Perfect musical choice to go with the images. Especially the water.
i can't get over how beautiful these shots are great video
Gorgeous. I just got my A7S yesterday (Rokinon 35mm Cine) and it is simply incredible. Cheers! Beautiful footage!
Awesome work, bro! I definitely want to buy this camera.
This is my most liked A7s video test. Thank you sir!
just quick Q, did you use any kind of stabilizer / gimbal / slider when you took this video?
im interested of film making recently and still looking for worth to buy video cam.
Frick dude, this video and camera are awesome. Thanks for making this! I want one real bad.
Thanks man!
I need this camera in my life!..been thinking about a 5dmk3 for months but the dynamic range and low light capability of this camera is amazing!
Started filming with a 5dmk3 after buying it mostly for photgraphy purposes, eventually bought an a7s last week, love the a7 leagues above the 5d for film but ill still keep the 5d for studio photography work.
Simply stunning!
Amazing shot ❤❤ thank you for sharing
And wombat picture style for the raw please?
Wow, that is just amazing footage for a camera under $2000. Just cant belive it is real.
awesome! thinking of getting a GH4 or A7S. Dont need 4k in fairness. would like to keep focal length and IS of canon lens 24-105. What do you think?
fantastic!
GOOD JOB!

Thanks! Some of the slowmo is 1080 60p and some of it is 720 120p. I've been shooting with this cam for a few weeks now and absolutely love it.
I love your videos. :) i have the a7s myself, still learning tho. Do you use any luts for the grading? I really like the colors in your videos.
wonderful!
of the two, which lens do you prefer for low light shooting? The 16-35L or the 70-200L?
Not sure if I should buy this or the a99. I'm leaning towards the a99, but then I see the aesthetic of the a7s' video and I'm hooked.
I hear the A7s is better for low light performance, very low iso granulation. But I can't confirm the information.
Carlos W. The a7s is definitely a better video camera, and nothing out there comes close to it in low light.
Ordered my a7s. Can't wait!
By way what lens for this?
There's a couple, mostly the Canon 16-35L and 70-200L.
Enjoying it so far.
Got couple old canon lenses so far. 50mm 1.8 24-105 etc. need to get one killer med/wide fast prime then I'm set.
Hi Matthew, can you please clarify something for me? In the video description, you say "It was shot mostly in the Cine 1 picture profile with an additional few shots in the cine 7 profile (s-log2)". I meant cine 1, and PP7, if that makes sense. Not sure which PP number the cine 1 was under.
***** Cine 1 is PP5 while S-Log2 is PP7
Gorgeous video. Have you had issues with the speed booster?
Thanks! I'm using the Mark 4 metabones sony to canon adapter, not a speed booster. But no unexpected issues, only drawback is slow AF.

Matthew Devino Well I do believe this video closed my decision for my run and gun camera; the A7s it is. Thank you for your response.
Connor Day wouldn't rolling shutter mess with this type shooting though?
Le Chiffre The idiom "Run & Gun" refers to portability of the rig and ease of use with limited resources. But yes, rolling shutter is a malevolent pain in the ass. It will be something that low budget filmmakers and videographers have to endure for several more years :/

how did you get that cool font in the intro?
reminds me of where the wild things are
thats either brian flower or moon flower.. check out dafont.com all the fonts you could ever ask for

which lens adaptor did you use for this? and how was the battery life when you use it with the 16-35?
Metabones Mark 4, battery life isn't the best but it's not terrible either. The batteries are cheap so I just have a bunch of them for long shoots.
Incredible video. I own this camera as well as the 5D Mark iii. Which lens did you use? Its been asked several times with no answer. Thanks.

Matthew Devino Yes, sorry I didn't see it. Thanks :)
By 'handheld', do you mean 'handheld with a gimbal'?
Hey what lens was you using?
+Capital Punishment Read in the description
AMAZING.....!!
nice mate! did you use a tripod or it's totally on hand?
Anvar Jamal Saifi there’s a mix of tripod and handheld

I just manual focus everything even in stills, but there are some great Zeiss lenses for sony which have very fast auto focus.
would you say this camera is good for photography along with using your selected lenses or just video
It's great for both unless you need high megapixel stills. 12MP is plenty for me.
when you exported the video, what file did you use?
ProRes 422 then made an h264 from that file.
how did you manage to make such a stable video?
Tripod, and handheld stuff was using the EVF up to my eye which helped stabilize it.
Great video, how is the slowmotion performs ? is it in 60 fps?
Risslight it does really nice slowmo in 1080 60fps. No 4K slowmo. There's plenty of slow samples in the video.
Yes you did really well it looks amazing. So if I want to buy a camera for shooting videos (short film project and such) would you recommend this? Thanks!
This camera is so fucking great!
Fuck!
how can i convince my dad to buy this camera ? he whants the panasonic gh4 but in my opinion the money would be better spend in an a7s, am i right

Now if we can only get higher mbps streaming...Great footage though.
say please, what it is track
Song name?
Maybe late but.... "The Suburbs - Mr Little Jeans". :)
Dope!
great!
handheld? how come its so steady?
Not everything is handheld, just a couple shots like the very first one and a couple on the beach.
thanks ....ohhh my gooddddddd
is this graded?
There's graded footage followed by ungraded footage if you watch the whole video.
i want this guy as my DP! Jeez
what's the music bro ? thanks
AssoSOUNDSCAPE I don't know this version but it's a remix of 'the suburbs' by arcade fire.
yes it's from MR LITTLE JEANS pocketknife album
avi, mpeg4, wmv?
As far as capture format? MP4
As much as I like this cam's low light capabilities, the autofocusing is abysmal.
Hello budies I founded the killer track ! :
