@@leonbaptiste2272 i know that i pay for the unlocked version 256gb pro max $1199 when i trade every other year i always skip one year most of the time but i gte $699 back i been doing this for a little while already and its worth the trade in but for me i dont think avery year its worth the upgrade unless theres big upgrades this phones are the best from apple their supposed to last years i mostly do it for batteries to whe ou get a new phone batteries are so much better so me instead of changing batteries i rather upgrade every other years i dont mind new phone new upgrades for half price

I’d rather just take my 650 plus 100 gift card from Best Buy and you can pay off the remaining balance with zero percent interest for 12 months through Best Buy credit

Yeah, especially considering I have the 1TB model which cost me $1,700, and I’ll get less than 30% of that back with a trade-in. Besides, most of the AI features won’t be there to mid 2025. I’m sticking with my 14 Pro Max for another year.
It’s still USB 2.0 so it’s not anything special.

I have the 15 Pro Max and I don't plan on upgrading to the 16 Pro Max. I don't feel the need to upgrade my phone that works fine and is well built and will last a very long time. More and more I feel iPhone upgrades every year seems more like a status thing amongst your peers than an actual real need. I work hard for my money and I'm not going to spend that kind of money every year when there is absolutely nothing wrong with what I have.
I would think so. Your phone is less than 12 months old. Why would you think you need to upgrade?
Ya I think upgrading every year is stupid. And it's not like anyone will know if you have 16, 15 or 14 since they have the same design. So you not missing much
The battery life is why I’m upgrading, I have held on to my 13Pro max for years because of that. Features are used occasionally, better battery is used all the time.

That's not true. I have a 15PM and it has crazy battery life with the high refresh rate screen.
@@Favoranthony-qv4fq not necessarily. As soon as new phone is purchased, low and behold the iOS updates follow and only then will an iPhone show its true intentions. Battery drain which is very common with every iPhone and not forgetting the over heating scenario. That’s how Apple keeps the public in their eco system.

Thoughtful video. All great points. To me, updates are for users who have older phones like the iPhone 11. I bailed on the the iPhone 7 when the dumped the headphone jack and put in that crappy Intel modem.
Now I have an LG V60 from 2020. It has a huge 5000 mah battery, headphone jack, removable storage, 32-bit Hi-Fi QuadDAC, 5g, and a superb camera. I got it new for $320. After 4 years the battery still gets me 14 hours. When the battery goes, I'll pay $69 to have a new one installed.

I’m using the 13 pro max and was really thinking of upgrading this year. Now, the night before pre-ordering and I’m gonna hold off for 1 more year. I’m sure it will be a great upgrade and all but my 13 pro max is still amazing. Next year will be the year for my upgrade.

Yeah I’m with you on the yearly upgrade thing, I lost interest quite some years ago. I only upgrade when I feel it’s a worthwhile one. I went from a iPhone 6 to the iPhone X and that was the game changer iPhone right there for me. Didn’t upgrade then untill the iPhone 13 but I didn’t go Pro & honestly I was disappointed with the 13, didn’t feel like an upgrade from my X at all I even preferred my iPhone X. Only now that I’ve started a RUclips channel do I wish I had gone for a Pro Model. Now the 16 Pro is out I’ll be upgrading to that & probably won’t again for a few years.
800 bucks for a 60hz panel is nasty work.
I have the 14 pro max too. I still owe about $500 on it through AT&T Next Up plan. I’m thinking maybe I should take advantage of the upgrade program privilege that has cost me about $144 so far at $6/month! The trade-in value is only going down, so this might be the best time to upgrade. Hopefully my bill won’t go up too much!
I have the 14 PM, but wanted a smaller phone. Not 6.1 smaller so the 16 Pro 6.3, seemed right on time. Expected delivery on launch day👍🏽

One of the few honest tech RUclipsrs out there that tells it like it is, I’m keeping my 15 Pro Max for another year (and maybe more), it works perfectly for me, battery easily lasts a full day and I have it on my favourite colour (navy blue), which I’m definitely not changing for a poo-coloured phone 😆

Fr sometimes I really can tell the difference when I watch RUclips videos on camera comparisons… even with RUclips’s poopy compression.
I may have to stick with my iPhone 13 Pro. It just feels so right and I have around 11 hours of battery life on internet still.
I still have 100% battery health on my 15 Pro Max from launch day last year! IT's crazy. I've never had that after a year. So the only thing making me want to upgrade is the fact I'm already paying monthly, so I'd get a new iPhone and just keep paying monthly. The payment increases a bit but that's it. My 15 Pro Max cancels the loan out and I just keep paying monthly. So I don't need a new one and with 100% battery health there is no reason to get one, however if the payment only slightly increases and I get a new iPhone, then I may as well just do it. Because next year, the trade in for my UK iPhone will be a lot less and is always less than you get in the USA anyways.
That's impressive! Maintaining 100% battery health for a year is no small feat. It sounds like you're making a smart decision weighing your options before upgrading.
@@TravisMCP I must admit it’s not by any real ‘thought’ as such. I use it how I want and every night it’s charging on the Anker Cube MagSafe. So I think it learns that very quickly and then only does the 80% charge until before my alarm and does the 100% then. However, if I am driving it and use Google Maps a lot (which I do on holidays), I do plug it in all the time and so then I will make sure to set the maximum charge limit to 80% in the settings to save the heat effects at that top end of charging and topping up. Another note here is, in the car I never use MagSafe charging due to the slow speed and heat, I always use the USB-C. Anyway, I’m waffling, sorry.
I could do the same thing buying it directly from Apple. The trade in on my 15 pro max clears the rest of my monthly payments and I could get the 16 pro max for the exact same monthly payments I have right now.
However, if I don’t trade in this year and finish paying my current phone, when the 17 pro max comes out, I’ll have a fully paid phone probably still in great condition to pass it on to one of my children or I could trade in and pay less for the 17 pro max next year.
Since I have ZERO complaints of my 15 pro max and let’s face it, we’re getting AI anyway, I’ve decided to carry on paying this one fully.
Also, I have the blue titanium and I’m not very keen on the colour options this year 😊
I would 100% upgrade if I had the 14 pro max though.

@@Richard_BarnesNot waffling at all mate, interesting stuff about how you look after your battery. I could learn a thing or two. I didn’t know you could set a max 80% charge when plugged in the car for example. Is this better for the battery then? I do a lot of driving and my 13 is always plugged in and ends up at 100% for a while.
The big thing with the battery is 1000 charges cycles to 80% rather than 500. That is a massive improvement. Especially as I suspect AI as it does on other phones is going to kill the battery.

I have my 15 Pro, and even though my hands are cramping and have bad battery life. I’m still holding onto this phone and don’t have plans to upgrade yet. I’ll definitely see if I can wait for the 17 pro or maybe 4 more years
I haven’t upgraded every years since the iPhone 6S. I went from 6S -> X -> 12Pro. I’ll be updgrading to the 16Pro. The camera & camera app upgrades as well as the AI integration did it for me.

I second you, I have 13 pro max and with 87% battery health in 2 years of span of time it still doesn’t give up on me easily. Skipping it for this time as this phone is still a beast and gets every work done.
Same I’ve held onto my 14 pro max from day one I do think the 17 will be the one to make me upgrade.

can't ever downgrade from the pro to the regulars because of the reduced framerate. Can't look at a 60 hertz screen anymore, especially after spending apple money.

I am probably upgrading. From the 13 pro. Reasons: I need the pro max, because i'm getting older and my eyes are worse every year. I tried increasing the font and display size on the regular phone, but it actually messes up some sites and apps with missing buttons and so on. Also the battery advantage. People say get the 15 pro max , but since I upgrade like every 3 -4yrs, matter as well get the newest thing.
Idk who your carrier is but AT&T is offering the 16 PRO MAX for free when you trade in your 13 pro max. Only problem is you will have to wait 3 years for your next upgrade.

I actually consider 500 trade in after two years to be pretty darn good. But I’m still sticking with my 14 pro max because my battery is still great and don’t love AI rolling out after launch. Seems like 17s will feel like a full package to be excited about
I decided to upgrade from the 13PM to the 16PM. Figured it was time which I used to be an every year update but as I got older idc. Plus the 1000 credit from Verizon seemed worth it since I’m already paying for the premium plan
I’m using it now on iOS 18.1 and Siri is finally wicked smart. Have 15 pro max and did upgrade again. I’m an Apple sheep. I used Ai to re write many text and journal inquiries. So cool

The best offer from them is $300 on the 12 Pro Max, which isn’t much but definitely better than the person trading a base 14 for the same amount.
I think the 16 series both have some solid improvements over the 15 but the AI stuff I’d find useful are coming to my iPad and MacBook so I’ll likely wait but I’m still curious on the SE4.
Yeah I've got an iPhone 13 mini also and I checked that myself and I thought 200 bucks or you kidding me. Depending on what condition your iPhones in you can sell that on OfferUp or eBay for between $350 and $450 so Apple's way low on their trade-ins.

I totally agree. I’m in the same boat. I would love to have the USB-C because I make videos with my phone all the time but to me the upgrade is not really worth it at this time just for USB-C. Yes, the battery life would be great too, but the same thing for me here in Canada the only wanna give me $750 Canadian and yet for a brand new one they wanna charge me $2350 Canadian I’m not satisfied with that because mine is a one terabyte version iPhone 14 Pro Max plus you have to add the tax on top of the $2350 yet no thx.
I’ll wait till next year then I think it will be a better option for me to upgrade and then I don’t care what they give me for my phone .
I am in the same situation with having a 14 Pro Max, but in my case the battery is really bad with that now. Can hardly last the day without a charge, so I am on the verge of upgrading. Less than 4-hours now until orders open for the 16 Pro Max for me to decide? The 80% charge limit on new phone is a big improvement in my opinion. I am sure my 14 Pro Max battery is done through repeated charging to 100% and getting really hot (sometimes I can hardly touch it, it is so hot). My iPad Pro M4 now with almost half of year of use with charge limit always kept to 80% still has 100% usable battery with no degradation. My trade in offer is £575 which I actually thought was pretty good.
I was also very close to upgrading from my 14 Pro Max but what stopped me was the very small differences from the chip or the camera. I also don’t want to upgrade until they get rid of the notch 😂 but we’ll see.
I upgrade every year because I have money to burn... and I can't take it with me when I'm gone.
I use that money on other fun things.
Hey Travis, thanks for your thoughts on this. I currently have the iPhone 14 Pro Max, same as you, and soon after the release, I came to the same conclusion as you - I will also not be upgrading this year. My reasoning is similar to yours; quite frankly, I do not have the funds to spend on a new iPhone every year, and so I want to make sure that, if/when I do buy a new one, that it is for what I would consider to be a major step up in capability that will add value to my life. So, like you said - maybe next year.

I currently have a 14 plus, it is working fine but I'm really close to pulling the trigger on the 16 or 16 pro., for the same reasons you gave (plus the dynamic island) I think I want to downsize my screen this time around. But like you said, the trade in value is low, even lower than your 14-pro max. But if I do it I figure I better do it as soon as possible before it goes any lower lol. Main reason I’m holding out is the 17 pro is probably going to be an incremental upgrade that “fixes” potential 16 problems and by then the AI stuff will have been out and tweaked. Still rocking the 12 pro max with one battery replacement, it’s already down to 93% health so let’s see what happens faster this shitty battery draining or the iPhone 17
Travis take your iPhone 14 Pro Max in two weeks to any Costco store, they have AT&T and they’ll give you $1000 for your phone. It’s a fact.

Yeah, they got me this year. Trading my IPhone 14 Pro Max for the 16 Pro Max, nothing wrong with my 14 but I try to skip 1 or 2 years. Funny I don’t really use the camera or other functions like others unless traveling somewhere. It’s true the trade situation sucks because you just finish paying off a $1000 plus phone and they give you crap back for it.

I’m still using a 13 pro max and if it wasn’t the pesky SOS no signal problem from time to time, I wouldn’t even consider uploading. I do want the usb c charging cable and a folding screen but I can’t bring myself to go to Samsung for a Z fold.
In EU it’s easier to decide NOT to upgrade, since we don’t even know if and when we will get AppleAI 😁
But here thing processing power is for all the new features it gets and still as fast as it was before I don't understand why people think about it as accumulation of features from the very beginning till now vs every year upgrades

I still have the iPhone 12 Pro Max. I am upgrading. I preordered my iPhone 16 pro max this morning. I got my wife the 15 plus las Christmas. Once my 16 pro max is in my possession, we’ll be an all USB-C household.
I have a 13 pro max and I’m also not upgrading. To be honest I’m more interested in waiting for the SE4 next spring. More than likely I won’t be getting a pro version next time I upgrade. It’ll be a plus model or the SE4. But I’ll wait for the 17 and decide then. If it has no substantial value then I’ll continue to keep my current paid for version until it breaks or is no longer supported with security updates.
Sticking with 13 pro max until they get rid of Dynamic Island or my phone dies. 😂
Yeah, battery life is very important to everyone.
Except for us who use Apple Watches, as we of course don’t mind having all day18 hours battery life on our watches for the 10th year now.
Luckily Apple know that and once again is kindly leting us charge our watches multiple times a day. We couldn’t have that joyful experience if we used any other smart watch that is on the market today
I feel and have said the exact same thing’s as you, Travis. I also have the iPhone 14 Pro Max and,(like you) they almost got me with the 16. I’ll wait until the 17. Done with yearly upgrades.

As a photographer since the mid 80s , for hire , a few things stick out every year to me -
1- how they keep cramming more megapixels in every year . Megapixels are not as important as you’d think .
I’ve gone from higher megapixel cameras to lesser , there a lot more to photography than megapixels.

The sensor is very important.
2- 95% of people have absolutely NO CLUE, as to how to take images , not do they CARE, not all - Most .
Since facebooks inception , I’ve never seen so many really awful photos than now , and what’s MORE interesting, is the comments - “ Gorgeous “
“ Beautiful “ , Wow.
Let’s be honest , you see what most people are doing with these cameras on the phone .

At this point, I’m not even sure apple knows what the future of the iPhone is going to be, making the same phone year after year, i was really hoping for a newer design, what a disappointment!! Again
Just sold my iPhone 15 Pro for $700. Not the best, but definitely better than the $540 trade-in Apple offered. I did it for the 16 Pro Max so it's not just the battery that will be way bigger, but the screen too.
