They left me to bleed out for more than 9 hrs! 9 hrs!!!!! I had to have an exploratory procedure to figure out what was wrong and fix my spleen and give me blood. I nearly passed away. When my now 40 year old son was just two weeks past his 2nd birthday, he fell 3 1/2 stories out of our window to the sidewalk. One of the many injuries he suffered was a ruptured spleen. In surgery, it was the first organ removed and over the course of his 16 1/2 hours of surgeries, they had to replace his blood 8 times his body supply had!! I will be forever grateful to all the surgeons who helped safe my son’s life. Dispute everyone’s expectations, he lives a fully independent and happy life.
Wow that is amazing and I'm so glad that he is ok. I have a very similar story that Happened to me when I was 3 yrs old. I fell out of my bedroom window 75 ft to the ground and landed on a snowy sidewalk. Than got up and began to walk back to my house. But my step dad met me at the door first because right after I fell my sister went and told my mom. Now what comes next is kinda insane but is 100% honest truth, so while I was in the ambulance they were asking me questions like what happened and I told them this and yes I still remember what happened to me to this day, I told them that my sister pushed me out the window and as I was falling baby jesus and two Angel's carried me down. Baby jesus was at my head and the two Angels where on each side of me and carried me down to the ground. And that actually happened. The doctors were in amazement and I had lots of medical visits over 3 years that they never found anything wrong with me. Nothing internally nor externally. I was literally a miracle. And that was not my first miracle. I was actually born dead with no breathing or heartbeat. The dr. Began to vigorously rub my back and than slapped my butt area and I started to breathe. This happened because I had my umbilical cord wrapped around my neck 3 times. And now I am 32 year old and I have had a total of 6 miracles when bgg I should of been dead or died and didnt. I truly believe that God has me here for a reason and until it's my time to go I will be here. I'm so grateful for knowing and having such a loving God.
Your spleen is an organ above your stomach and under your ribs on your left side. It is about as big as your fist. The spleen is part of your lymphatic system, which fights infection and keeps your body fluids in balance. It contains white blood cells that fight germs. Your spleen also helps control the amount of blood in your body, and destroys old and damaged cells. Certain diseases might cause your spleen to swell. You can also damage or rupture your spleen in an injury, especially if it is already swollen. If your spleen is too damaged, you might need surgery to remove it. You can live without a spleen. Other organs, such as your liver, will take over some of the spleen's work. Without a spleen, however, your body will lose some of its ability to fight infections.

My Dad and 3 causins had an accident from hitting a slushy snowball that fell from the side of the road. They went into a spin and hit a telephone pole. I ruptured my spleen into 4 large pieces playing hockey, internally bled 2.5L of blood, needed 2 blood transfusions, was in ICU for 4 days and total hospital stay was about 9 days. I had a great surgeon who ended up stitching my spleen back together, placed it in a dissolvable medical bag and I still have a functional spleen today
My spleen was removed in my latest surgery. I am currently minus my: gallbladder, appendix, omentum, the lining of my abdomen, my ascending colon, my ovaries, uterus, uterine tubes, spleen, part of my pancreas, and probably a couple other things too. The “widow maker”. My husband had deep vein thrombosis of the splenic artery. He listened to the pain and went to hospital for help. He gain an extra 8 yrs because he listened to his body.
A “widowmaker” is actually a heart attack caused by a blockage of the left main artery or the left anterior descending artery, not the splenic artery. MY Daddy was a LEO and was shot 3x's while on duty back in the 70's. One bullet hit his spleen. The Dr. did not remove the bullet. He stated it was not a good thing to do due to medical reasons and He would bleed to death if removed. My Dad lived 20 plus years beyond..... Rest in Love❤
My beautiful Rottie's spleen ruptured and he bled out into his abdomen. I rushed him to the vet but it was too late to save him. I can never hear the word "spleen" without thinking of that horrible day. RIP, Thor.
Same but with our family dog Molly, Splenic cancer caught too late and the most humane thing to do was euthanize her before she could suffocate to death. Most heartbreaking decision of my parent's life. My condolences for your loss.
I learned that it stores up to 500 ml of blood, which can be pumped into the circulatory system during intense physical effort. That would also explain why we feel the pain when we work out and whatnot.
That is not because of your spleen directly. Your organs bounce around, tug and pull on their connective tissues, and bump into each other when you run. The side stitch you feel is connective tissue being stretched and pulled, and the nerve that is related to that connective tissue runs through that area. It’s called “referred pain”. It could be any organ that is pulling and causing the tissue to hurt.
I shattered my spleen a few months ago on a bmx. Rough ride that was. 6 hours afterwards i eventually had surgery after loosing aprroximately 2 and a half litres of blood. Throughout surgery had many blood transfusions and also my heart began to have problems aswell. Very lucky to be alive and very thankfull. Only 3 months later im back on the bike fully recovered doing what i love
I had some idea as a broken lower rib punctured mine. With how quickly I became light headed and barely conscious I get how quickly you could bleed out from such an injury. Amazing when you consider its roughly the size of the palm of his hand!
My gallbladder was removed in 2012. My spleen and 2/3 of my pancreas were removed in October 2018. My dad passed from pancreatic cancer in August of 2017. My eldest brother passed from it in December 2015. The surgeon looked me in the eyes at my first post-op appt and said, "I can 100% guarantee you that you would've had pancreatic cancer within five years had you not had the surgery when you did." He said the reason he left 1/3 of my pancreas was bc he didn't want me to come out of surgery "a full-blown diabetic." However, he added that I would eventually get there. He was correct. My labs are starting to show elevation in my A1C first for the last six months. I've also had a hip replacement with five revisions, a femur replacement and a knee replacement with two revisions. All in all, I've had 26 surgeries and getting ready for one more. Then, add malignant hypothermia. I think I'm tired.
@averylangs can't say it was a quick recovery. Unfortunately that lead to an 8yr battle with pain killer addiction that nearly killed me again. 13yrs off the pain killers and doing much better but it's been a battle.
I had my spleen rupture in a car accident in summer 2018. It took me an hour and a half to get to the nearest hospital. Once I was there they had me under for surgery in under 3 minutes because I was almost dead.
I don’t have one any more😢 A Dr. nicked mine and didn’t tell me the truth about it and he had to remove it. Without it when I catch a cold the flu, I’m sick for three months unless I go quickly and get antibiotics which most doctors don’t want to give me. But I noticed that when I don’t eat sugar I don’t get very sick at all!

It is also extremely common to have an accessory spleen. You can live rather well after your spleen has been removed due to injury or illness. Eventually (as in several years) after spleen removal the liver will assume some of the functions of the spleen. Removal of the spleen will cause secondary or reactive thrombocytosis which is an elevated platelet count. You can live just fine with a mildly elevated platelet count (it just means you will clot faster and your blood will be a little thicker). If the platelet count is to high you will be put on 81mg aspirin a day along with prescription medications to prevent blood clots.
It's awesome to see inside our bodies. I don't know if there is any other site on the web that does this. At my age (67) we will hear about many of these organs as they start to cause problems.
Learn something, Physiology of Spleen-Stomach[1] The Spleen-Stomach has various physiologic functions as follows: Spleen governs transport and transformation. Spleen-Stomach transforms food into nutrients which are the sources of Qi and blood. The nutrients include glucose, amino acids, lipid, cations-anions and trace elements. Stomach is considered a reservoir which empties into the intestine. Water and salt absorption depends also on the transportating function of Spleen-Stomach. Qi and blood are both vital to life, Qi means energy, blood points to circulating blood and its formed elements, blood and nutrients furnish nourishment to all organs and tissues of the body. The up- and down-bearing function of Spleen-Stomach Stomach governs down-bearing function and Spleen governs up-bearing which signify the motility, secretory, assimilative, absorptive and dispersing functions of upper digestrive tract, among which, gut hormones and functional activities of vegetative nervous system of the gut are involved. Dysfunction of up- and down-bearing function of Spleen-Stomach can cause gastrointestinal disturbances and various Spleen deficiency syndromes; furthermore, they may also affect the functions of other organs. Spleen governs the flesh or muscles Transport and transformation function of Spleen-Stomach provided nutrients for muscle and energy metabolism. When Spleen-Stomach is diseased, muscles will be atrophied and become asthenic. Spleen governs thought Brain activities depend normally on furnishing the nutrients, Qi (energy), blood, Yin and Yang. With adequate Qi and blood and normal function of Spleen-Stomach, brain activities can proceed normally. Spleen manages blood Spleen has hemopoietic functions; the blood encased within the vessels of all solid and hollow organs is managed by Spleen. Relationship between Spleen-Stomach and other solid and hollow organs Spleen and Heart The heart governs blood vessels and blood circulation. The lung is related to oxygen uptake. Dispersion of nutrients over the whole body depends on heart, lung and brain function which can also affect Spleen-Stomach motility and function. Spleen and Kidney In TCM, the Kidney stores the body’s essence, and its function also depends on the nutrients transformed by Spleen-Stomach. The transport and transformation function of Spleen-Stomach is also influenced by warming and nourishing functions of Kidney. The two are interrelated and mutually potentiating. The Kidney in TCM involves the genital-urinary system, sexual glands and hormones, immunologic function, nervous system and the heart in terms of western medicine. Spleen and Kidney are both involved in water and salt metabolism. The Kidney-Yang denotes the hypothalamic-pitutary-adrenal, thyroid and gonadal axes, secretion of the corresponding hormones, sodium pump activity of red blood cells, caloric energy production and immunomodulating functions. The Kidney-Yin involves cAMP/cGMP activity. Diagnostic approach and preventive treatment of Spleen-Stomach diseases[2] Spleen-Stomach theory forms the basis of diagnostic approach and treatment of Spleen-Stomach disease, according to the presence or absence of Stomach-Qi. Poor appetite signifies grave prognosis and absence of Stomach-Qi; good appetite signifies good prognosis and presence of Stomach-Qi. By looking at the complexion and feeling the strength of pulse, one can predict the prognosis of the patient. Sallow face is the usual manifestation of Spleen disease. Color of skin over thenar muscles reflects Cold or Heat. Cyanotic hue of vein over thenar region indicates Cold in the stomach, whereas redness shows Heat in the stomach. During convalescence from postoperative state or infectious diseases, doctors should prescribe those herbal medicine for replenishing and modulating the Spleen-Stomach function. Spleen deficiency syndrome is a multi-system and multi-organal functional impairment, but mainly manifests as digestive tract disturbance. It can be classified into Spleen-Qi deficiency,Spleen-Yang deficiency and Spleen-Yin deficiency. The diagnostic criteria in common are poor appetite, abdominal fullness after meal, loose bowel movements, pale or sallow complexion. The characteristic features of Spleen-Qi deficiency are fatigue, asthenia, atrophied muscle, pale tongue with thin white coating and moderate, weak pulse. Spleen-Yang deficiency is characterized by cold limbs, fear of cold, puffy pale tongue with slippery coating and slow fine pulse. Spleen-Stomach-Yin deficiency has dry mouth, low urine output, dry stool, shrunken smooth bare, red tongue and rapid fine pulse. Pathophysiology of Spleen deficiency[1] Clinical and animal studies were conducted with controls and statistical analysis made in the past years. Changes in secretory and absorption functions of gastrointestinal tract Salivary flow and salivary amylase activity. Salivary gland activity is related to Spleen function. In patients with chronic gastritis, gastric or duodenal ulcer or chronic colitis with Spleen deficiency syndrome, the salivary flow of parotid glands on citric acid stimulation decreased together with decrease in amylase activity. After Spleen-fortifying treatment, the condition was improved and normalized. Gastrin and acid secretion. Serum gastrin level was found significantly lowered in Spleen deficiency syndrome but elevated after treatment. In peptic ulcer patients with Spleen deficiency, BAO and MAO were both significantly higher than normal. In chronic gastritis patients with Spleen deficiency, the day and night and 24 h uropepsin activities were much decreased. Pancreatic exocrine function, BT-PABA test. In peptic ulcer patients with Spleen deficiency, urine excretion of BT-PABA diminished. On treatment with Spleen-fortifying drugs, urine BT-PABA and amylase activity in chronic atrophic gastritis patients were increased. Xylose excretion test. Decrease in xylose excretion in chronic atrophic gastritis patients with Spleen-deficiency syndrome indicated impaired absorption function of small intestine. After treatment, the xylose excretion rate was increased. Motilin and gastrointestinal motility. In patients after major surgery on digestive tract with Spleen deficiency, serum motilin level was significantly higher than normal. The gastric tone was decreased with retention of fasting gastric juice but transit time of small and large intestine was reduced, resulting in rapid emptying, these motility disturbance led to loss of appetite and epigastric fullness after meal. Structural and biochemical changes in gastric mucosa. In Spleen deficiency syndrome patients, the turnover rate of epithelial cells was hastened, showing a short life span. In the mucosal lamina propria of superficial gastritis with Spleen deficiency, the glandular atrophy was more severe, intestinal metaplasia more frequent, whereas in disharmonic Liver and Stomach type, the metaplasia was modest. Ultrastructural studies revealed reduced microvilli of epithelial cells, increased junctional width, membrane damage, swollen mitochondria with disrupted cristae and dilated endoplasm in parietal cells[4] decreased pepsinogen granules within chief cells; increased plasma cell infiltration in lammia propria. These changes were not seen in disharmonic Liver and Stomach type. Substance P and VIP were found increased in sigmoid colon, correlated with loose bowel movement. Elevated cAMP levels in gastric mucosa and plasma of Spleen deficiency syndrome were found, and plasma cAMP/cGMP ratio was decreased markedly in those patients with intestinal metaplasia. Likewise, gastric mucosal SOD content and plasma LPO also decreased significantly; these might correlate with metaplasia.

Unfortunately, I got a crash course in what the spleen does when my sweet Gus dog was diagnosed with cancer on his spleen and died within a week of diagnosis. Bc the spleen is so vascular, it had spread everywhere, very rapidly. It finally got into his spine and his back end was paralyzed. We had to have him put to rest. 😢

When I had my kidney transplant 13 years ago, after surgery my spleen got so big it was driving me out of my mind. I have a short waist, and there's not a lot of space for extra stuff in there. I still had my original kidneys, and now they put an additional kidney in my abdomen next to my bladder. All the blood cells that were floating around from the donated kidney and from the surgery were picked up by the spleen. The spleen actually stores damaged blood also, so that it can be processed out of the body. It literally felt like a football had been shoved up under my ribs. I was begging the doctors to take out my spleen, but they said that I needed to keep it. It took about a month, but finally it went down again.
I don't have one anymore. I split my pancreas in half in 6th grade. Then had 2 working halves for a while until one stopped working and I needed to have it removed. It was attached to my spleen at that point so the spleen had to go too.
A friend of mine fell off his bike when he was a teenager. He hit the handle and a rib broke and punctured his spleen. Luckily, it happened close to an ER. He was in the OR in less than half an hour. Even so, they nearly lost him and the surgeon said that, had they taken a few more minutes to bring him in, he would have been dead. They had to remove the spleen, and told him to be careful, because he is now at risk for several conditions for the rest of his life.
My husband ruptured his spleen similarly in HS. He came down on the handlebars while riding at a skatepark. I'm not sure how long it took for friends to run to his house and get his parents, get EMS on scene, and get him to the nearest hospital which was about 20 mins away, but I'm very glad he is still here today. I know he spent about a month in the hospital, doesn't remember most of it, & that he still has his spleen. I hope we never have to experience something like that with our 2 boys!

My father got liver chirosis then we treated him for nearly 3 years. His blood hemoglobin level always drops too low that we need to add new blood every 5 or 6 months. If your spleen is too damaged, you might need surgery to remove it. You can live without a spleen. Other organs, such as your liver, will take over some of the spleen's work.

Thanks for the explanation. I am living without spleen and several lymph nodes due to GIST removal.

Physiology of Spleen-Stomach[1]
The Spleen-Stomach has various physiologic functions as follows: Spleen governs transport and transformation.
The up- and down-bearing function of Spleen-Stomach
Stomach governs down-bearing function and Spleen governs up-bearing which signify the motility, secretory, assimilative, absorptive and dispersing functions of upper digestrive tract, among which, gut hormones and functional activities of vegetative nervous system of the gut are involved. Dysfunction of up- and down-bearing function of Spleen-Stomach can cause gastrointestinal disturbances and various Spleen deficiency syndromes; furthermore, they may also affect the functions of other organs.
Spleen governs the flesh or muscles
Transport and transformation function of Spleen-Stomach provided nutrients for muscle and energy metabolism. When Spleen-Stomach is diseased, muscles will be atrophied and become asthenic.
Spleen governs thought
Brain activities depend normally on furnishing the nutrients, Qi (energy), blood, Yin and Yang. With adequate Qi and blood and normal function of Spleen-Stomach, brain activities can proceed normally.
Spleen manages blood
Spleen has hemopoietic functions; the blood encased within the vessels of all solid and hollow organs is managed by Spleen.
Relationship between Spleen-Stomach and other solid and hollow organs
Spleen and Heart The heart governs blood vessels and blood circulation.
Diagnostic approach and preventive treatment of Spleen-Stomach diseases[2]
Spleen-Stomach theory forms the basis of diagnostic approach and treatment of Spleen-Stomach disease, according to the presence or absence of Stomach-Qi.
Pathophysiology of Spleen deficiency[1]
Clinical and animal studies were conducted with controls and statistical analysis made in the past years.

In summary: a ruptured spleen is a quick way to die
About a year ago I cracked my ribs and my spleen ruptured and I had to get it physically removed via surgery in the ER and it took me like 4 hours until I woke up in the recovery room and after the CAT Scan I passed out for the second time and didn't wake up till on my way to surgery and felt nothing but pain then I was all good and it got removed and I survived one of the most gruesome pains ever imaginable. New fear unlocked spleen rupturing
I like how that spleen is ruptured.
Wow, I'm glad he's alive
My husband ruptured his spleen similarly in HS. He came down on the handlebars while riding at a skatepark. I'm not sure how long it took for friends to run to his house and get his parents, get EMS on scene, and get him to the nearest hospital which was about 20 mins away, but I'm very glad he is still here today. I know he spent about a month in the hospital, doesn't remember most of it, & that he still has his spleen. I hope we never have to experience something like that with our 2 boys!
@@deathgrifts-alt similar story for me, I had a big skateboarding accident and ruptured my spleen, was in the ICU for about a week and things healed on their own. Didn’t realize just how close I was to dying then lol
Thanks for sharing this. I trust that he is doing well.
I did mine on a BMX bike doing jumps. I had to ride my bike home tried to wait for the pain to go away. the pain never went away. I waited like 2 hours before going to the hospital. Doc saved my spleen
My father got liver chirosis then we treated him for nearly 3 years. His blood hemoglobin level always drops too low that we need to add new blood every 5 or 6 months. Then one day he did too much blood vomit and within seconds he passed away. Doctor told his spleen got ruptured due to high BP.
My father was vegetarian and never drinks or smokes eventhough he got blockages in his liver.
So take care of your health while you can because once it gets affected then recovery is always not possible.
I have no idea why I'm watching these they just appeared one day on my RUclips shorts and I never stopped watching
I always thought the spleen was useless, the more you know apparently.
So we can't actually survive without the spleen
Yeah
When fictional characters Spleen gets injured oh no anyway
Emergency surgery for the few time I saw it in fiction.

Yeah that’s been a lot larger than I thought it was. Considering the fact that I thought it was like the size of your thumb not the size of your hand
But splenectomy???
Can’t you live without it?
