I have a problem when people go with preconceived notions. Sriram has made a romantic fable with thriller as a side dish

I don't understand why BR didn't understand the film or why things happened. The reason why they showed what happened between Albert and his ex after telling exactly what happened is to tell why he did it and how he did it and what he felt doing it and after that, if he is actually a bad person, and the fish scene was exactly the same for Maria, while washing his hands in the washroom Albert realised that Maria may have killed those innocent fishes and might actually be manipulating Albert because she is a cold blooded murderer and hence a bad person.

I actually fully enjoyed a Hindi film in the cinema after a long time. The climax worked really well for me and the cinematography was just stellar. Not to mention how good VJS and Kat were in this. Very close to a perfect film for me.

My friend says its actually a fable, the characters arent supposed to be taken in the context of realism but as part of a dream, a fantasy of a man in prison fantasizing about redemption. And i see it now and i agree. If you watch it as realism, then the sacrifice at the end, nor the violence earlier makes sense.

That's interesting and kind of makes sense. It was too wishful and hopeful. But it also sounds like a justification. Were there any hints of this being a dream or a fantasy?

I actuallly liked the climax because it gives you the feeling of wanting it soooo more but it’s SRR style where he wants us to find out what happend with his foreplay of 2.5 hours!
For example not using any dramatically sensitive instances nor taking too much movement! its a very difficult task to keep the audience engaged! But I guess he wanted to break that stigma which I believe he did at least a 80%!!!!!!

@@Troller_007 most of them don’t, but at the end it’s the judgement of the Director, If I was one I would definitely try my best to get the rawness of the dialogue so I would prefer the actor to actually speak it out!❤️

Amazing story with lot of twists and turns and awesome performance by both the actors. Leaves you baffled at climax and wondering about all the different possibilities it could have really ended!
Makes me want to watch again.. I guess when you watch it second time, you will perceive the story lot differently.

Surprised that BR didn't like the film. It is so subtle and nicely ended. Way way better than the horrible movies like animal salaar leo pushpa etc etc. Climax was a killer. Am gonna watch in Tamil too! BR, pls watch it again.

The film was incredibly enjoyable. Do you measure the film by the structure or just by what you feel? And if you have certain expectations, is it the filmmaker's duty to fulfill them, I think it's on you? And why can't the first 30 minutes just be enjoyable yet meaningless stuff just dished out to you (while everything in this film did have immense meaning?) who decides these rules? This is where we ought to take film reviews and criticism with a pinch of salt, its one person's opinion, oftentimes highly respectable, well researched set of opinions and observations that enhance the viewer's way of processing the films. However, we need not agree with the reviewers always. While I respect BR's views, my observations and processing of both Animal and Merry Christmas have been poles apart from him. I did not enjoy the earlier film for what it was and absolutely adored the latter film for what it was. I'd just say, cut the reviews some slack, stop putting them on a pedestal or asking them to be confined to your opinions.

  • @jyothsna231

It is an exceptionally well-crafted movie, Oh Maaen! It is more in the vein of a closed-space Hitchcockian melo-dramatic thriller than the Earlier darker films of Raghavan. Still, like David Fincher's Panic Room this movie too, attempts to rekindle our hopes in Humanity...I think that was intentional... Because gore and Nihilism, morally corrupt and ambiguous characters or situations are usually Raghavan's Territory... Instead, in here, he ends up creating a universe that after all build up, at the end, visually communicates that we could rely on each other...that's an achievement indeed ... In that way the movie is antithesis of Andhadhun!
And also Merry Christmas is less ambitious but Purely poetic... There is a scene -burning out suff in the furnace after 'Deconstructing' the mirror image of the room, and it also happens to be a closet nod to Citizen Kane - it's poem on screen...it's that good...

He’s blinded by his biases. He has his favorites (e.g Dhanush, Mani Ratnam, Vanga) and even if they do mediocre work, he glosses over them. And there are artists whom he evidently dislikes. Such as Sethupathi. You won’t see too many positive comments from Baddy about a VJS movie. It’s so obvious.

BR u should remove biases and watch it with Fresh eyes. Nowadays i feel u r not the BR of Bahubali days. U either do review or do interviews. The huge conflict of interest you have ...cannot really trust anything u say either good or bad...For example, u never liked Sivaji Ganesan as a actor u tell he is the most stylish but u never appreciated his acting but in a recent interview with Touring talkies u said one of u fav actor is Sivaji Ganesan. Why? Something is missing in u reviews recently. Salaar is a crap of a movie...A movie that has nothing but sound but u r not all critical to those kind of crap..it seems u r toning down a lot for those interviews...Atlast its u opinion u channel thats what u say but have some integrity..u always sound like u have integrity but recently i dont feel that

BR, that's a great observation about the glasses, as usual. I saw it but didn't "notice".
I watched the Hindi version. Loved the world building, the tiny details like the theater experience of the yore, the night rose, the bakery etc. But the chemistry didn't work for me at all. VS looked very unsure in almost every scene. For some reason, I kept thinking if Madhavan would have been a better choice. That said, I didn't see any reason for Albert to be a Tamilian except for casting VS. Katrina's closeups were painful but she was fine otherwise.

i exactly felt how what you spoke Baddie. i think film was boring for most part and twists were not convincing enough. i dont go to sriram raghavn movie for a romance. i expect thrills and twists and expect to learn things i have missed. the climax was so cold and unconvincing. katrina was good in few scenes but overall i felt she was a wrong choice. not just me, most in my theatre were disappointed as i figured from their reaction. but then i also saw some glowing reviews from some familiar critics and then i thought may be its me who missed something. but now after watching your review, i do feel slightly validated as its not as good movie as others are making out to be or sriram raghavan ought to make one.

This reviewer Galatta Plus does not know what he is talking about!!...Simply linking some flamboyant words to criticize this film didnt work with me! I think this film is brilliantly made! It was a pleasant surprise.........all the answers are burried in this film...I watched it the second time and it came alive! Ah! that is what it meant...Ah! that is why this happens....Ah! that is what the meaning behind the ending!! Sacrifice!.... There is no redemtion without sacrifice! for Vijay Sethupathi! Mr. Sriram Radhavan, my first time to see your movie and you took my breath away with your film making!! It is refreshing to hear Antonio Vivaldi's classical music ... simply perfect.... (instead of the usual ARR). Io never read the books or the french film or anything else... I simply watched it alone and I really enjoyed the film making! Oscar award for Direction and Editing! Bravo!!

I think you analyze too much and stopped enjoying the movie. This movie was by far the best movie that came out in the last 2 months including other biggies. Myself and my whole gang enjoyed it very much. U have gone old baddy, u are appreciating movies only when movies have classic movements that you have enjoyed in 80's. Have a open mind man
