As I don't have much experience with the concept of diesel-electric propulsion, can someone explain me why these locomotives need such huge diesel engines, if all they have to do is spin the electric generator which is used for traction motors? Couldn't it be done with a relatively smaller diesel engine? Thanks in advance.

reliability- a much larger engine producing 2500 hp will last much longer between overhauls then a engine 1/2 its size, on a locomotive.
