Well much to my good wife of 48 years dismay, I went ahead and ordered the parts to build this unit. That was back on the last week of April. Now I have the ESP8266 (cute little bugger!) and the sensor (funny bigger then it's cousin for large use) but the screen is listed as en-route to the USA! Perhaps they shipped her via the proverbial "slow boat from China!" Ah well, today I decided to try and use a different display that I have instead, see if I can make that work. After all I will need something a bit larger to be able to see it on my dash with my 67 year old eyes looking through eye glasses that make a coke bottle look thin.
Winners of the giveaway are Tomasz Jagusz L'amateur d'électronique John2009R Congratulations! Patroen winners have also been drawn so this giveaway is now closed.
Guess I answered my own query, I took a tiny oled that was i2c, and a BMP180 sensor which is i2c, hooked them up to a WeMos D1 EPS8266/Arduino Look-a-like, loaded your script and I have a working altimeter, which is what I wanted for the dash of our Motor Home so I know about where we are when crossing the mountains in Wyoming, Colorado, New Mexico and Arizona, where we spend our winters searching for the 72 (degrees). This will be useful, however I am going to have to figure out a better display, my 67 year old eyes have a hard time trying to see that tiny print on the 0.96 OLED screen, even though it is bright and so very sharp, as OLEDS tend to be. Maybe I will try and get a larger LCD screen to work in it's place, perhaps a 16X4 or something like that, I do have a nice 128X64 blue/white screen that could perhaps make a nice display if I can figure out how to hook her up to an ESP8266 or perhaps an ESP32 so I can use some of the blue-tooth functionality as well.
Nice video! It's very common go hike at places where we don't have signal coverage. Would be nice a 2.0 version of this project where we can store data on a sd card or even on eproom.
Would GPS be more precise for altitude? Perhaps an interview improvement could include a gps & atmospheric pressure sensor data logger? Nice video. Thanks
I really love how you show the code in close-ups so clearly! I wish everyone would do that. Thank you! #giveaway black (but I'm not picky any color would be fantastic)
Not sure if you would be interested, but ... How hard would it be to also add GPS to this? I drive a lot and would like to track my location and altitude. I already have an Arduino UNO with an SD shield. Just asking?
Sorry if my question kinda silly. If there isn't connection(I assume you need internet connection), is the temperatur/pressure/altitude still shown ? Is the connection only for logging purpose ? Thanks
#giveaway the color are not the most important thing here so you can choose one for me. I am very excited about the thing that you do RUclips as full time now. The videos are great! Keep going, and good luck to every body.
Hi, please help. When I compile your code I get the following error codes, Arduino: 1.6.9 (Windows 10), Board: "WeMos D1 R1, 80 MHz, 4M (1M SPIFFS), v2 Lower Memory, Disabled, None, Only Sketch, 921600" WARNING: Spurious .github folder in 'Adafruit BMP280 Library' library WARNING: Spurious .github folder in 'DHT sensor library' library C:\Users\Richard\Documents\Arduino\libraries\Barometer-master\Code\Barometer\Barometer.ino: In function 'void loop()': Barometer:92: error: 'showValues' was not declared in this scope showValues(t, p, a); ^ Barometer:94: error: 'mqttLog' was not declared in this scope mqttLog(t, p, a); ^ exit status 1 'showValues' was not declared in this scope This report would have more information with "Show verbose output during compilation" option enabled in File -> Preferences.
OK, I have the same hardware, I'm using the same version of Arduino. I've added all the libraries and added the ESP8266 board in board manager. I've picked every single esp8266 board install but still cannot compile! ARRRRRRGH!!! Sorry, had to do that. Every single board only say's "Error compiling for board...(fill in any esp8266 board here)".
Could you make a video or explain somehow, how to integrate custom animations in your HomeAutomation Sketch via the Neopixel Library? Stört es dich eigentlich, wenn man deutsche Kommis schreibt?
yes.. kabylake helps encoding, but it's a trade off between mobility and power. However, I also use a razer core with 1060gtx as docking to have an additional screen and more connections. A simple dongle usb-c to hdmi instead of the noisy razer when I record voice.
bitluni's lab oh that's nice, I never thought of that and went and purchased the xps 15 9560 and now I understand how difficult it is to carry a 2kg load with you. The reason for me to buy that was for editing videos for my upcoming RUclips channel , but yeah thanks a lot for the reply
#giveaway blue, but happy with any! Always loved your videos and style - you got me into printing PCBs at home using sodium persulphate etc! Glad you're doing this full time and I'll be supporting on patreon soon!
On the one that I built out of older parts, I needed to subtract 300 feet to get her to read very near our present altitude of 2567 feet, going by my Garmin SatNav hand held unit.
Hi ich bin aus der Schweiz, aber damit alle es verstehen auf Englisch: You make great, educational content and you're still funny and enjoyable. Keep up the great videos, you're a motivation-bomb! #Giveaway Red
You could, it draws 0.1-0.2Amps. A 0.4mAh lipo will last 2h. That might be not enough in some cases. If you make the case bigger a 18650 could be sufficient
Cool; wish I had found in time for the giveaway, ah well, my luck, I would never have been drawn anyhow. I am currently on a negative funds order, so can't afford to buy any of these parts. That said, I do have older versions of the hardware, I wonder if a fellow could simply wire up a larger version of this unit and make it all work with your script?
#giveaway orange. Man, its gonna be so cool to have your videos regularly (I will maybe find the inspiration to finally complete some of my ongoing projects ;). Vielen dank. Tschüss...
(Black or Clear if I win the #giveaway please) --- Congrats on the big move! Funny and informative as always. (0.29 "OK..." lol). But... If I get one, does that mean I have to cut a hole through my desk to run the usb cable through? Seriously tho, I get that you wanted to just stack the shields on the wemos with as little hassle as possible, but it would be really nice if there were an easy way to have the cable come in from the back (the side opposite the screen). Either that or "legs" below the box so the usb cable can bend back. Always great videos!
#giveaway green seems nice ;) BTW the idea of having to be connected to internet all the time during hiking seems a bit odd for me :D have you thought about logging the values offline? and maybe using the ESP as an Access Point to display the graphs :D Anyway, great project, greeting from Poland :))
Have some sd card shields here around.. ...guess wie have to make another version ;) btw. did you recognize a little bit of a polish accent from me? It's funny.. I'm born in Poland, living in ger for almost 30 years without an accent.. except when I speak English :D

You won one logger... please send me your address where to ship the device to my email address bitluni@bitluni.net . no worries it won't be shown anywhere
#giveaway , red colour seems good for me. Can u also make smart distabce tracker with gps for runner. Garmin and other sports watches are so costly!!!!
Awesome video with great fun. What a commitment to climb up a 2000m mountain just to test the sensor. From the dawn of mankind: Impressive.
das ging nur mit der kraft der gedanken ;)
AKIRA fotografie and he had to climb it up twice xD. He had to setup the camera
Awesome that you can do it full time, and beautiful nature you got there.
Nice pace, fitting music, great story telling :) and the project is awesome!

11/10 video!
Well job your are doing excellent .....
Congratulations on becoming a full time RUclipsr!
thanks!
what code changes will I have to make if I want to make it into an online altimeter and not a logger
Awesome... Great Video and Project 🤓 Looking forward for "More'er" Videos 😉
I wondering if I can use this for my flying wing to find thermals will soaring
Would GPS be more precise for altitude? Perhaps an interview improvement could include a gps & atmospheric pressure sensor data logger? Nice video. Thanks
gps ~25m variation in altitude we will do it in future
Heyyyy videos every week
Awesome video, thx
I really love how you show the code in close-ups so clearly! I wish everyone would do that. Thank you! #giveaway black (but I'm not picky any color would be fantastic)
If you are out of WiFi range, does it buffer or back log the information to send to mqtt server after WiFi is available again?
not yet... currently I connect it to a the mobile hot spot of my phone.
I'll do logging to sd for the gps project
Can we use this for checking maximum altitude of DIY rocket.
Nice! How much flashing memory is available on these Esp8266 ? I am BFROBOT Beetle instead. Power consumption is also a consideration.
Not sure if you would be interested, but ... How hard would it be to also add GPS to this? I drive a lot and would like to track my location and altitude. I already have an Arduino UNO with an SD shield. Just asking?
You solder good. Any tutorial?
Haha add gps module, gyro GY-521, buzzer, plus evt. sd writter, some sketch and you've perfectly working vario for paragliding :D. Thanks :P
How does data gets transferred to adafruit website or server? Can please explain to me.URGENT
Sorry if my question kinda silly.
If there isn't connection(I assume you need internet connection), is the temperatur/pressure/altitude still shown ?
Is the connection only for logging purpose ?
Thanks
Can i get file stl bruh? I wanna print to my printer3D
The models are on the github
Find deine Videos echt klasse mit deinem Humor :) Sah aus als würdest du aus Bayern kommen, da bin ich auch ab und an ;)
#GiveAway Green Would be Awesome!!!
can you do a video for bme280 or similar?
Can I buy one complete???
Please teach about MQTT
Awesome!!
#giveaway (any color) Wow you are still alive welcome back....
Wonderful view. What places? Where are you? Greetings from Colombia South America
#giveaway Green! Awesome.. Love the fact you use blender for your 3d..
Thank u very much...😙😍

сделай видео с природой гор с этого ракурса я понимаю это не тематика твоего канала но всё же так красиво
Could you make a video or explain somehow, how to integrate custom animations in your HomeAutomation Sketch via the Neopixel Library?
Stört es dich eigentlich, wenn man deutsche Kommis schreibt?
I replied on you comment on github.. no worries. I read them now and then
Hi there, have you tried microPython for esp? I think you would like it, please make another video about it. :)
Do I have a chance next time?
#giveaway Great video! Have you done anything with the bme280? Any color will be fine.
thx u sir
#giveaway Green! Wow! The production values on this video were superb! Really glad I subscribed! Love the project! I wish I had a 3d printer now.
Good news you start your every week a new video. Succes. #giveway green
If it's a bitluni's video out notification, then you will see ESP8266 for sure, you are an ESPecialist. #giveaway
Orange plastic always looks good to me for some reason.
#giveaway blue
And was curious to know , do you edit your videos on the xps13 ?
yes.. kabylake helps encoding, but it's a trade off between mobility and power. However, I also use a razer core with 1060gtx as docking to have an additional screen and more connections. A simple dongle usb-c to hdmi instead of the noisy razer when I record voice.

I am at 30m over sea level and after three days my wemos shows -7m
#giveaway blue, but happy with any!
Always loved your videos and style - you got me into printing PCBs at home using sodium persulphate etc! Glad you're doing this full time and I'll be supporting on patreon soon!
I think since altitude is calculated partially by pressure it's always going out a few degrees. #giveaway green :)
On the one that I built out of older parts, I needed to subtract 300 feet to get her to read very near our present altitude of 2567 feet, going by my Garmin SatNav hand held unit.
Hi ich bin aus der Schweiz, aber damit alle es verstehen auf Englisch:
You make great, educational content and you're still funny and enjoyable. Keep up the great videos, you're a motivation-bomb!

#giveaway Blue. Cool project! Cold you not use small lipo to power it?
You could, it draws 0.1-0.2Amps. A 0.4mAh lipo will last 2h. That might be not enough in some cases. If you make the case bigger a 18650 could be sufficient
#giveaway red, your idea is so cool and good that you'll be doing weekly videos
Cool
Wow, weekly now! I just recently found you and subscribed after watching everything, added the bell this time. #giveaway yellow rules!
Tschüss...
#giveaway Black. Keep those videos rolling in!
#giveaway Excellent videos. Very informative and lots of fun. Keep up the good work. Any color is fine.
green or black
#giveaway gold. I'm building my own sensors for my house using Wemos D1 Minis!
(Black or Clear if I win the #giveaway please) --- Congrats on the big move! Funny and informative as always. (0.29 "OK..." lol). But... another possibility is to make the code render up side down.. anyone can fork my code? :D
good point. Or sideways.
# Any color.
#giveaway Green! Lets go outdoors and see some green :)
#giveaway Find your videos fascinating and like the humour too. Glad you're posting on here more regularly now. Like 'blue' btw.
#giveaway awesome, where are those places?
Did you record your hike alone? #giveaway....yellow
Nice Backdrop where are the mountains #giveaway Blue..
#giveaway pink, because.. why not :p and that's some serious hill climbing skills ;)
#giveaway green nice work. Been looking for a Wemos case so will check out your design. Regards
#giveaway black all the way, I found this awesome device very interesting to work it out with my senior project :)
#giveaway: white;
interesting the way you make your videos.
#giveaway green seems nice ;) BTW the idea of having to be connected to internet all the time during hiking seems a bit odd for me :D have you thought about logging the values offline? and maybe using the ESP as an Access Point to display the graphs :D
Anyway, great project, greeting from Poland :))
Have some sd card shields here around.. ...guess wie have to make another version ;)
btw. did you recognize a little bit of a polish accent from me? It's funny.. I'm born in Poland, living in ger for almost 30 years without an accent.. except when I speak English :D
bitluni's lab I took it for German accent :)) but it's not bad anyway ;)
#givaway white!
your altitude was off because you didn't take temperature into account, have you?
I have used the altitude calculated by the library..
I know and they don't compensate for that, it's only based on pressure, which is not correct
betrayal! It probably needs to solve a nonlinear equation. I'll fix it for the next logger :-)
#giveaway blue please! Love the videos, i used your video about controlling cheap rf switches for my home automation! It works great
#giveaway orange color. Good video I 'll do a similar project.
#giveaway blue! Great video with a nice bit of comedic value too, :-)
#giveaway Golden video, cool tutorial. (color black if possible)
#giveaway interesting video and a somewhat unusual approach than most other RUclips videos. I like it. Looking forward to see your next video.
#giveaway Black.. Nice and Clean Build!
#giveaway orange color. Awesome work :)
#giveaway any colour will do.
Love your channel:-)
