I'll tell you one thing. What goes around comes around. The guy who plays Cardinal Rourke played Roy Batty in Blade Runner. In Blade Runner, Roy Batty crushed a guys head with his bare hands. In Sin City, Cardinal Rourke gets his head crushed by Marv. Do the math.
In all my years of watching this scene, I never noticed Roark's eyes as he's describing Kevin eating people, start to get colored in and glow. I don't know if it's a callback to the same scene in the graphic novel, but it's interesting.
The graphic novel is purely black&white (black ink, white space, no gray). In the movie they made brilliant use of Rutger Hauer's unique eye colour and his expressive eyes. Great casting choice for this role, still sad he's no longer with us.
This scene was so much more brutal in the comic book. It wasn't visually brutal, but in the comic book Marv mentally narrates how as he brutally tortured Roark, he laughed so hard he cried, as Roark screamed in agony.
Roark should have known better so he ultimately reaped what he allowed by letting Kevin commit almost unspeakable crimes. Marv's retaliation made Hartigan's vengeful acts against Junior Roark seem more restrained though not by much. Neither Marv nor Hartigan had much time with their enemies.
Actors come and actors go, and when they go everyone comments about how underappreciated they were and how amazing they were. Well... This is one of the cases where it is absolutely true!
I do believe that scene of Elijah Wood's 'head' on the table, is the best acting he has ever done. He should've won the Oscar that year....or...erm....his head anyhow O.o
Даже в таких эпизодических ролях Рутгер Хауэр выкладывался по-полной, уникальный актёр, светлая память... 😥

That's why i like Marv. Even if his history is connect to a mystery, he really don't care about any man motivation. It just crap for him. He disconsidered everything the old man saids and laugh about like a really bad ass.
No, actually he cared what the old man said, he wanted to know why Goldie died. He even answered: "I know it's pretty damn weird to eat people." He didn't began his torture right at the moment he came in, he listened to the old man patiently. Of course, the bishop fully deserved what he got, don't get me wrong.
Laughing at other's people motivations doesn't make you a bad ass, makes you stupid and shallow. And the character of Marv is just as evil as any other in the movie.
Oh, Father Time. Father Death. Rutger Hauer, in the bloom of his health, and strength, convincingly portraying a brutal murder in Bladerunner, long ago. As great as Rutger Hauer was, I felt like he was miscast as Cardinal Roark. He’d too hardened, too intense, especially with his voice. In the comic, Roark is depicted as tiny and frail, but his eyes carry a strength behind them, as well as madness. I always imagined his voice had a higher pitch to it. I feel like Toby Jones would have been a better choice.
It's almost funny. You can tell the old guy was speaking seriously, putting thoughts into his words, maybe hoping that he'd sway Marv to at least wait until he could get back up....And all the while it's obvious that Marv if he even is paying attention couldn't care less about any of what he says.
Jacob G nah i think its not about that in this scene. Its merely him ist explaining his origin story before he dies. He doesnt beg for mercy, he accepts his fate.
