Lesson for today: Don't clean just the tip, you have to take care of the shaft as well.

Re-stressing the button spring worked for me. My de-soldering pump is old. Thanks!

They get horribly furry with the old solder don't they?

Thanks for this. My sucker got jammed on first use with solder clogging the nozzle - fortunately I was able to use the tip of the iron to melt and clear away the blockage. I've bought some desoldering braid now!

I was just thinking "if he presses the button now, it will go flying" - I was not disappointed

It would have been more amusing if it has been in a busy lab 😂

I'm trying to get my sucker piston to seal better. Doing the test on the hand it really doesn't slow much, it's leaking somewhere.

A drop of 3-in-1 on the felt washer?

That's a great idea. I think the silicone would also have similar effect, but you can't beat the old 3 in 1!

Question: i opened it up not because it was dirty but because it wouldnt lock. I opened it up and there wasnt any kind of plastic or metal bar thats supposed to lock it. Any idea how to fix this?

"Sol Dear" - that's how we in the Netherlands say it.

Lmao, the issue was never with the holding mechanism, it was always with all that impacted solder stuck to the plunger keeping you from fully depressing it down to be able to lock.
That's why when you removed all that solder it started working again before you pulled it fully apart.

Aah Circlips. AKA "jesus" clips for their nasty habit of popping off at great velocity and shooting somewhere inaccessible. Often followed by a cry of "Jesus! Where did that go?"

What worries me is that I can't seem to locate the containers of them I have just incase, they manage to lose themselves on mass!
