A few things about this (all positive to the animation). 1. Hamilton and Laurens really did love each other in real life (there are love letters that get quite scandalous to prove it) they even told each other that they loved each other. And anyone who doubts that they had a relationship past being friends can fight me on it. 2. The joke that Laurens loved turtles comes from the fact that he had at least one field journal he kept about them. 3. About the end of the song when Hamilton says the last line. "I have so much work to do." You can tell he is so emotionally distraught because of the fact that he doesn't rhyme when he speaks like he does for the rest of the play. He does the samem thing when Philip dies. That's how you know he is in emotional distress.
I actually cry during every single animatic of this.

My opinion (if I can see what I'm typing through the tears)
"Now he's free" was a message from Hercules and Lafayette which they wrote on the back of the drawing because they possibly knew about Laurens being gay and about Hamilton liking him back, but when Hamilton got married, Laurens felt sort of trapped because he coulsn't do anything about it. Lafayette and Hercules were saying that now he is dead, he is free of the constraints that came with Hamilton marrying Eliza.
Just my opinion.

The bonus ending shows how powerful this interlude really is.... The tear droplets Hamilton shed make it even more than upsetting.... And the fact that it is saddening the way one of his closest friends died for him as a part of the contribution he made for the revolution that shaped the states.
