It is said that the Strv 103 could put two 105mm APFSDS shots in the same hole within the span it took it to reload (3s). It'd be interesting to see this effect against some type of composite frontal armor.

It would be interesting to see the penetration of the bofors 40mm apdsfs-t, the available data claims 170mm @2000m.
I believe it is well over 200mm

@@jackmclane1826 That's why actual range test results, taken with a few hundred shots, quote "Up to X mm. of RHA @ 0, 30 or 60 degrees @ range R metres or yards'.
There's too many chaotic variables involved Projectile muzzle exit velocity is affected by:
      Propellant chemical consistency.
      Propellant combustion velocity.
      Propellant contamination.
Gun barrel residue (from previous shots).
      Gun barrel wear.
      Projectile drive band sealing quality.
The projectile itself, also has chaotic variables, created during manufacture & assembly, such as structural integrity flaws.

@@CZ350tuner I think you overcomplicate things here a bit, while proper maintenance and production quality control should suppress it as much as possible. There is a reason why one of these rounds costs upper 3 digits in bulk.
The whole list has an impact, but they will only vary the velocity in the order of some 10 m/s. That is the difference of 50 m more or less distance. It matters to monitor quality. But on the battle field... that does not make the difference.

the bofors 40mm tungsteen arrow can do 140mm at 30 degress -i guess bofors could do a budget bullet like this doing 90mm but all 4 at once instead of single shots

I would like to see this 30mm (or 35mm), 200 to 500m distance vs 2x plates (30mm outer, 35mm hull side wall) of armox 600t uhhs steel (or maraging steel 350), in 90° separated 60cm from each other (air gap), then we would know if this kind of caliber would pierce side skirt + side hull.

THE Leopard 1 turret had 60mm cast armor all round at "compounded angle" of 30o horizontal and 35o vertical [~ 45o] LOS of 59mm . The principle threat would be the Russian 30mm BT API . But this round could only penetrate 60mm cast armor @ 0o ~ 50m range . Clearly and APDS would be needed.
The Russians did develop a 30mm APDS [BPS] that could penetrate 6cm @ 45o at 100m range , while follow up 30mm APFSDS should penetrate 6cm @ 45o at about @ 500m range. So this tank would be vulnerable to the BMP 2 at the end of 1980s.
Back in 1979 Germany installed perforated plate armor [23mm RUBBER -steel perforated plate -RUBBER ] that were mounted on shock absorber about 4" from the leopard cast turret. I have found ballistics research papers featuring perforated plate, that suggest me of 1.7 to 3.5 ...with research showing that brittle projectiles would crack under strain of perforation. More importantly the projectiles would yaw and hit follow on plate at sharp angle while breaking up leading to their defeat.
Even more surprising; it is reported that such perforated plate armor is also featured in Israeli Merkava tank turret armor and leopard II wedge turret armor in the turret.
Any help in this area would be appreciated .

Ok. I guess APFSDS would be a bit lacking in mass if fired from a 30mm cannon, thus less inertia to punch through armour plating

I think is better to extend at least 1 second after the penetrator disappears completely if fail to penetrate, or 1 second after complete penetration, especially for APFSDS-T.
