  • I returned to Sweden in 2015 after a couple of visits in the early 1990s. Railfans who may not be able to afford a trip, will appreciate this HD video which gives you an up close look at a mid-20th century heavy rail system modelled on the New York system. The C14 cars from 1989 have a brake release sound that I have only heard emanating from the rebuilt NYCTA R-44, now retired. The C14 is a small lot compared to the C-6 cars from 1970-74. The original cars had familiar US made SMEE braking systems, motors and cam controllers. There is a quite respectable transit exhibit in the city. Stockholm is a mid sized city with a big city transit system. The three trunks all meet adjacent to the Central Station. The two minute walk over to the commuter trains will be eliminated when a center city through tunnel will be just an escalator ride away from the subway platforms. Although the longest subway ride takes less than an hour to ride from end to end, it is a suburban network much like the Washington Metro, itself built after the tunelbana was largely completed in 1975. It is remarkable that this 100 station system was built to its near full extent in just 25 years. The tunelbana was built during a time when US rapid transit was, completely stagnant and only resumed growth with the construction of PATCO, then BART, WMATA and MARTA. And it was built to a very high standard of comfort and aesthetic design. City planning was coordinated tightly with this metro. Vallingby, Bredang and Liljeholmen (intermodal) stations are three examples of Transit Oriented Development that are featured in my video. One can circulate for hours and only cross the path a few slow moving cars. Bikes are common, but not the plague of locusts they have become in a few cities, because transit in Stockholm is that good. It has to be, as the cold winter days are 6 hours long.

Nice videos! I also know that the old trains (C6, C14 and C15, along with the other models) used to sometimes open their doors while still rolling very slowly, like at 1.5 km/h, and that they would would start moving while the doors were half closed. This was done by some drivers to save time, although as much as I know is that when MTR took over the services, this was stopped.
This is still done a lot on metros like the Paris metro. But I wish the Stockholm metro still did this, it would have saved a lot of time and would have made the metro even more epic.

In the caption it says that you went to Sweden a few times in the 90's. Did you film or photograph anything back then? If so It'd be awesome to see that footage!

Man, it makes Sweden look like a nice place to visit and railfan. Also, are there gonna be any new trains in the future for this system?

Yes, the first unit of the new model called C30 has just been delivered. The C30 is going to replace the old C6, C14 and C15 trains while the C20 will still remain in service. Work to expand the Network has also just begun. Several new stations are being built and a completley new line (the Yellow Line) is also being built. The new C30 units are expected to enter service late next year and the new line and the expansions are planned to be finished around 2025
