    Arne Sorensen was maybe the best CEO I encountered in my career. He was an innovator, a n enabler and knew his business backwards and forwards. Cancer took him too young and deprived us of his brilliance. Marriott wouldn't have made the transition in buying Starwood and adding those brands without his vision and guidance. He left his mark that we still see today.

    The brand integration has been a mixed bag. The level of service is steadily declining even in their premium brands as everything goes “Marriott”. Even at the Ritz and JW Marriott properties I have encountered incredibly horrible service and understaffed locations. They need to stop focusing on this corporate speak (just listen to this interview) and get back to focused, sincere customer service.

    2 years ago I would have said Marriott was the best. But recently I would say Hilton and IHG offer better value. Marriott is typically 20 percent more expensive.

    The aggressive devaluation of bonvoy points combined with lackluster “high end” offerings pushed me to primarily book at rosewood, four seasons, etc. They have higher standards and don’t generate any ill will with depreciating loyalty system. I only consider Marriott when it’s a rural setting and my only other option is a rundown motel.

    Marriot was not the first hotel chain to embrace the franchise model. Pullman and FourSeasons did it before and honestly are better at it. Merriot is too big for its own good in my opinion

  • @rokgod7
    @rokgod7 7 месяцев назад +1

    I admittedly may be missing something. But if they no longer owning the properties, that means they're renting them, and someone else is making a profit off of Marriott, which presumably eats into their margins. Sure, maybe they got a cash influx from selling those properties for more than they paid for them, and they're able to open more locations worldwide, but still seems like a poor long term strategy, unless they found a better way to boost margins that overcomes the profit loss of renting.

    • @thekindmaker6219
      @thekindmaker6219 7 месяцев назад +2

      I don’t think they rent the properties. From my understanding, the properties that want to use “the brands” need to pay them fees, instead. I think the biz model is a win-win for both the property owners and Marriott.

    • @rokgod7
      @rokgod7 7 месяцев назад

      Oh, more of a franchise model? But I think they owned the properties and sold them off. Either way, that’s an influx of cash now, but a loss of revenue later. So unless new revenue has better margins, it’s not necessarily a good future strategy.
      But I’m sure they’re working it so they do get better margins on franchising, I suppose.

    • @thekindmaker6219
      @thekindmaker6219 7 месяцев назад

      @@rokgod7 Yes, I think it’s something similar to franchising. However, it may differ a bit in detail.

    • @Nuganics
      @Nuganics 7 месяцев назад

      @rokgod7 yeah but with asset lite they can focus on what they can do great eg the branding/customer experience. Building is a nightmare with huge risk. If management is focused if can be great for all. This model is very similar to NVR and I have some great articles if you want to know more. I don't own Marriott yet.
