Keneally is a serious badass. And not just on guitar. He plays several instruments, and can keep up with Steve Vai. Can't say that about many other people in the world.
Funny enough, literally everyone that's ever stepped on stage with Vai. It's one of the things I appreciate about the man the most; he has no qualms about inviting musicians that appear on pair or even better than him AND will, unlike Vai, play several instruments during the show. Not many people are big that way. (though I'm sure Vai can play anything at least decently).
Mike (and his core band) carry Satriani live all the time, lol. Also check out Vai Piano Reductions by Mike....he takes Steve's gittar stuff and shreds on acoustic grand....
I remember seeing this tour going way back in the late nineties, in little old Adelaide, South Australia. And that "second" guitarist, Kenneally, is truly amazing. But then again, the whole band was brilliant. Ah, the good old days, pre-911, pre-covid, just a better time all round. The best times of my life.
depends on the piece ,no? But theres ppl who does that. Pete Thorn have also walked in to sessions and played stuff he just once. i think that was the case when he went on trial for guns n roses. The rec company wouldnt let nobody hear the studio work, so the manager gave Thorn a listen on his phone , then he went in 8 minutes later and playd it. Dont kill me if theres detailes messed up, but i believe thats fairly accurate
What I like most about Zappa, is underneath the cynical narcissistic mysoginistic personality, is the real Zappa lol. When he gives praise YOU BETTER FUCKING LISTEN AND TAKE THAT PRAISE. He’s hard to impress, but he is NO asshole dummy in reality. Just hard to like at first lol.
About the most wonderfully inspiring (& intimidating!) freak show of electric guitar exuberance & technical mastery I’ve ever seen/heard! Stunning playing!
I saw this tour and during the show Keneally put his arm around me like he was scared, later Vai held his guitar out and let me use the whammy bar while he played. Was a tiny club and such a cool experience. Saw Keneally play in a bar once and he was hanging out and showed me how to play part of "I Can't Stop" that I couldn't figure out.
at no point in this video does that happen. i was wondering about this since i know theres no fucking way keneally could play the actual paganini parts that vai does in the movie. now i know. video title is slightly misleading.
Sorry to disagree with you Theo, but not only could Keneally play the Paganini parts...or any part of any song he wants....but he could do it on guitar with right hand and piano on left hand simultaneously. He is a monster as is Vai, which is why both played for Zappa,
Vai is the God of 6-string, but Keneally is also an amazing musician. Also played with Zappa, like Vai. And he can play keyboards and guitar at the same time. Never seen Vai doing that :-)
Saw them play this at the Caravan of Dreams in Fort Worth. Keneally broke a string and Vai says “alright Ralph go fix your guitar!” The whole place fell out laughing.
In a masterclass i asked him " What are your best remembrances of the film Crossroad?" He answered: " I remember i was in the part, of a bad guy...And Ralph Macchio used to scared off every time i had to look in his eyes in a very bad way .. " : D : - )) Thanx for uploading .

Yeah! Lol. Maybe via would be good on bass? Lol he would probably suck actually. See, I’m a former hood guitarist. Like a really good rythm guitar player…… which is making a joke about how I don’t play guitar very well. But I SHINE on bass. People say, if you are bad at guitar you should play bass. I play bass much better than most bassists or guitarists I meet. I think that’s a silly point to make. I joke by saying I play “lead bass” to each there own. All the guitarists that are better on guitar than me, suck even worse on bass than I could have imagined. Just a funny stereotype about bassists or guitarists. Steryotyoes are fun! I play too many instruments to name. All very mediocre. But still more instruments than you can probably come up with off the top of your head. I don’t learn long or hard enough and I get bored easy!
@@SirPraiseSun I just feel like Via is one of those guitar junky guys. He can shred and he’s great on guitar, but I feel like if you put a bass in his hands he’d get confused. Most every time I hand a bass to a (pro) guitarist I play with, they barely play it… treat it like it’s some sort of foreign object their body needs to stay away from lol. Like, I just heard you shred on guitar, go ahead and do that on the bass. You don’t have to go “plunk, plunk, plunk, plunk” a lot of people are under the impression that bass is just “more simple guitar” and that’s just not the case. A guitarist usually has a pre conceived disdain for bass guitar, and when they go to play it they play it with that disdain and MAKE bass a simple little toy. I’m not an amazing guitar player but I play every single instrument mediocre. Only instruments I’ve struggled with and haven’t tried again are brass. You can make any instrument hard to play if you play it with skill.
Ry Cooder--- All the Slide Guitar parts. Steve Vai-- All the non Slide Guitar parts, including the Eugenes Trick Bag, the part where the Caprice 5 is. There is NO Yngvie Malmsteen or Stevie Ray Vaughan or Arlen Roth in the Duel to be heard.
Karate Kid lost. He never repeated Jack Butler's part. He just forgets the rules and decides he can bust into his classical piece a round after he forfeit lol
John Jones actually the Karate Kid won because the Steve Vai neo-classical he had dubbed in was better than the other new-classical piece Steve played 😂
That's now how the competition works. You copy the previous player's riffs, or you lose. He never copied Butler's part, so what happens after that is irrelevant.
John Jones no, in those kind of competitions you play the same riff or a better riff. If you play a better riff it cancels out the previous riff by the opponent.
I remember seeing Mike play with Joe Satriani, and I wondered who is this guy good enough to be on the same stage with Joe, and he was legit! Also onstage 2/3 of the Aristocrats, Bellor and Minnemann one of my favorite concerts.
Mike and B-boy Beller have been together from the start, more or less. Joe Travers worked with those two early and still sits in/tours and I think he's done a satch tour, dunno anymore
I REALLY hope that Steve Vai is on next season if Cobra Kai! Maybe the father of Hawk? Maybe giving Ralph Machios son guitar lessons. If enough of us dream it maybe it will come true
Anyone know what is reminding me of another solo from around 6:17 , for only about 7 seconds, of another solo from another shredder? I'm thinking Mr Scary, George Lynch, from Beast from the East (and I'm currently listening to check). The thing is the Wah effect on that particular phrase that is so familiar. Please help so that I may sleep. :-) EDIT: Not Mr Scary. The Wah is important. This may seem like madness (kinda is) but I know I've heard it before and I'm not ready for the meds just yet!
Great playing! Although, they cut the final part of the duel. I'd like to see how Steve plays that final note in the movie. I'm sure it's done with some kind of sound effect but would be pretty cool to hear it during a live performance. Still great stuff though...
@ChrisMJH Lion's growl is a pretty good description, it would be nice to know how they got that sound. Apparently there's no explanation on the DVD either. I've watched a few guitar players play this solo on youtube, none of them can produce that sound exactly the way it is in the movie. On top of this, it's also kind of annoying the way Ralph Macchio fakes it in the movie. He plucks the guitar like it's a bass rather than picking the notes like you're supposed to on a 6 string. lol... still a good movie though. The guitar duel at the end is an iconic scene in film history.

Mike Keneally is incredible in his own right. That's why Zappa,Vai, Satriani and others have had him in their bands.

ha ha ha jajaja is only because Ralph Macchio is not around

Good to to see that bass player still hangin with him all these years later. Saw them last winter in Calgary Canada and they were all amazing
It amazes me and leaves me in awe the sheer level of dexterity, instrumental proficiency and talent Keneally has.
I was 16 when I watched this show, 90's, São Paulo - Brasil. Amazing... Unforgettable!! Thank´s for good memories!
