They don't have the catchy melodic hooks of the old stuff though and that's essential for success. It's understandable as they're all different people now to an extent.

We barely understand it today, but ABBA is one of all time best selling band/artists in the world. I don't remember the exact place in list, but there is only huge stars as Elvis Presley, Beatles, Michael Jackson and maybe some more that are not beaten by ABBA. Up to the shift of millenium, ABBA was effort one billion USD for reunite, make one album and a world tour of 100 shows. They rejected the effort.

ABBA were an unusual Eurovision winner, in that they broke with tradition and sang their song in English rather than their native language. That may well have helped them win the contest and it certainly helped them storm the British pop charts. Released on March 12 in the UK, “Waterloo” entered the bestsellers on April 20. Two weeks later, on May 4, it rose to No.1, where it stayed for two weeks. Britain’s love affair with the group was underway.
    A truly international hit
Nor was it just in the UK that ABBA stormed the charts. The song topped the bestsellers in Belgium, Denmark, Finland, West Germany, Ireland, Norway, South Africa, and Switzerland. It also reached the Top 3 in Austria, France, the Netherlands, and Spain, and hit No.6 in America.

Here in the UK they were massive from 74-82, nine number ones, many top ten hits-pretty much everything they released went top ten & a load of number one & top ten albums. The 1992 Gold compilation recently notched up a thousand weeks on the UK chart-the first to do so as it has over the last 29 years kept re-entering. Even outstripping much longer released huge albums such as Tubular Bells, Bat Out Of Hell, Thriller etc.

48 years ago today, ABBA The Swedish Supergroup began their reign on the Official Charts as Waterloo became their first UK Number 1 single. The Swedish quartet's first UK chart entry made its way to the top of the Official Singles Chart in its third week, 22 days after winning the 1974 Eurovision Song Contest.ABBA have scored 9 No. 1 singles and 10 No. 1 albums in the UK, becoming the most successful Groups of all time on the Official Charts."SOS" has been recorded and performed in concert by several prominent artists, including John Frusciante, Peter Cetera, Chris deBurgh, Cher, Portishead, Fozzy, and Canadian rock group Headstones And Erasure
Ray Davies of The Kinks said that he was taken with the song after seeing the group perform it on the BBC television show Seaside Special. Pete Townshend ( The WHO ) said the song had "a great sound".
American singer-songwriter and former Czars frontman John Grant has called "SOS" "one of the greatest pieces of music ever made", adding that Agnetha Fältskog's "perfect" lyrical interpretation and emotional delivery is "a beautiful thing". British conductor and producer Charles Hazlewood called the song's "supersonic" transition from an acoustic D-minor key to an electric rock motif "absolutely genius".
Sex Pistols bassist Glen Matlock has claimed to have been inspired to write the main riff of Pretty Vacant after hearing "SOS" on a jukebox. By The Way take å Look At This ! ABBA ; A ( agnetha fältskogh ) B ( björn ulvaeus ) B ( benny andersson ) A ( anni - frid lyngstad ) - ABBA
ABBA - ( 1972 och 1983 ) is considered to be one of the largest in music history with over 400 million records sold in (2014 ) but new satisic`s say`s that in some bananrepublics that is maybe 100 million records or more not regristrated AND ABBA`s Manager Stig "Stickan "Andersson was a buisnessman and changing record`sales to stocking`s like oil art and what ever - he`s dead and they say that he is the only one who did know the EXACT number of sales.
ABBA - is one of the few artists to have achieved success across ALL the continents of the earth.
In the mid -1970s, were A B B A the most successful pop group in the world in all categories.
Abba has over 70 singles as No. 1 Worldwide and over 60 albums no 1 "Worldvide. In the UK they had 19 straight top 10 singles, 9 singles and nine albums as no. 1 on the British top list of which eight are in succession (1975, -76, -77, -78, -79, -80, -81, -82). In 2014, the group had sold 400 million records and is thus Sweden's most successful music export of all time.
Abba became the first pop group from Continental Europe / Nordic to achieve greater success in the English-speaking world for a long time. ABBA had so MANY HIT`s so they did not " had the time " to tour the Usa more than once - ( and they did`nt want to be the Opening act for any group as their Usa management wanted so they waited for USA until they had a number one hit - And It Came With The No 1 Hit " DANCING QUEEN 1976 - But Usa had to wait until 1979 before ABBA came On Tour - A lot of Tv Commersials Worldvide and Videos make them ( and The Beatles ) pioneers in making Music VIDEO`s before MTV .
ABBA music has been around over 40 years, they have released over 100 compilations and sold records in a 100 or more territories and you know that kind of thing (even in small amounts) does add up over time. ABBA is a uniquely universal group, selling or having their music stolen in every conceivable market. ABBA were popular in the heyday in even less traditional markets like Japan, Latin America, Eastern Europe, the Philippines, and nowadays in places like China and Korea. We just can’t nail down a total sales numbers.. I guess will never know.
      - ABBA did 3 Big Live Tours - European Tour 1974-75. - 1977 Touring Europe and Australia, where the group was extremely popular, ("ABBA Mania") and was documented in the feature film ABBA - The Movie, which received a bio premiere in December 1977. During the first half of 1978, the group did a promotional tour in the United States, where the single "Take a Chance on Me" climbed to third place.
ABBA has sent 20 songs onto the Hot 100 (all between 1974 and 1982), earning four top 10 s among 14 top 40 hits. ... ABBA has also landed 13 albums on the Billboard 200 (from 1974 to 2011), six of which reached the chart's top 40, led by The Album, which rose to No. 14, the act's best rank, in 1978. - No 1 Hit "Dancing Queen " in 1976 ) -
In the fall of 1979 the group toured Europe, USA and Canada. In the spring of 1980, the tour continued to Japan, which would be their last concert tour before the break. In 1980, two singles were released which, before the break, became the group's last one on the UK singles list: "The Winner Takes It All" and "Super Trouper The live album" ABBA Live at Wembley Arena 1979 "
ABBA World Tour 1979-80 Live Record "ABBA LIVE at WEMBLEY LONDON 1979 " (On RUclips in HD Song`s like "Summer Night City " Does Yor Mother Know " Hole in Your Soul " Gimme Gimme Gimme " and many more
ABBA: The Tour, later also labelled ABBA in Concert and ABBA: North American and European Tour 1979, was the third and final concert tour by the Swedish pop group, ABBA. Primarily visiting North America, Europe and Asia during 1979-1980, the tour supported the group's sixth studio album, Voulez-Vous.
The tour opened in Edmonton, Alberta, Canada, on September 13, 1979, and closed in Tokyo, Japan on March 27, 1980, having performed 52 shows in 40 cities across 13 countries. As it was the group's final tour before unofficially disbanding in late 1982, it included the largest catalogue of hit songs performed on a tour.
Abba was elected to the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2010 and the Swedish Music Hall of Fame in 2014

Their last album, The Visitors, was referred to in that video as a minor success with only the single 'One of Us' regarded as successful.
But over the years, most songs in that album have captured the admiration and attention of music lovers of a later generations. And these songs remain very much loved until today.

Sweden, Sweden, Sweden, what talents you create! What is it with this little country in the North? Answer: one of their treasures is / has been that they have a natural aptitude for singing and for music in general. It is in their genes. See for example "allsång på Skansen", Stockholm, where they meet and sing together once a week in the summertime. ABBA was one of the very first artists to be known outside of Scandinavia. A big hug from Norway, neighbour of Sweden.

Those music video were famous also because ABBA didn’t tour everywhere , or make appearances in far countries like Australia and America where they had big success, so they made music videos to promote their music and singles. This was years before MTV made music videos a thing in the early 80’s, so it was kind of a big thing before it’s time. Those videos(along with the music of course ) definitely helped promote and make new ABBA fans years after they broke up, and probably are just as famous as anything that played on MTV from the 80’s till now.

Great Reaction. Both couples married soon after each other and divorced though stayed friends and colleagues. If you react to "The Winner Takes It All" then that is extremely touching and poignant as it was written by Bjorn about his Divorce and his Ex: Agnetha had to sing it hence her sad look deliberately all thru' the video. The 2 Boys had fantastic Worldwide success with another musical:Chess and now they are back after almost FORTY YEARS with 10 new songs and a 5 YEAR STAGE Show where they will be "Abbatars" and it's a "virtual" show with their own Theatre being built NOW in London for 2022:)

an interesting thing about their videos is that back in the early 70s music videos were not that common but ABBA made them because agnetha really didn't like traveling especially as they had huge demand in Australia so they would record these videos and send them to the tv stations to play. I would love if you watched Head Over Heals, it's from their 1981 The Visitors album the video is funny. If i'm not mistaken most of their videos were directed by Lasse Hallstrom who become a video director for hollywood movies after abba.

Hi!! Yes both couples were married and divorced during the group's career. That they managed to still working together is one of the circumstances that makes ABBA really interesting. This is reflected in many of the songs from their last years both musically and lyrically. The Winner Takes It All, Lay All Your Love On Me, When All Is Said And Done, One of Us, Slipping Through My Fingers are gorgeous songs from their two last albums. Their final recording (until 2017) The Day Before You Came (1982) is a sad and mysterious anthem. ❣️

Their early pre ABBA careers were pretty interesting as well. Frida had quite a dramatic childhood, Benny was in Sweden's equivalent to the Beatles, and definitely check out their post ABBA songs (later though!) Here are a few songs pre Dancing Queen that you should check out. My Mama Said, Watch Out, So Long, I've been Waiting For You, SOS, Tropical Loveland, ah so many more... They didn't tour much in America which hindered their record sales back then but their songs are incredibly catchy and clever they were bound to be rediscovered again and again....(they still racked up at least a dozen top twenty singles no small feat) ohh another must listen: Lay All Your Love On Me. (Came out after dancing queen) was a US #1 club chart hit....enjoy!

Just seeing this now. Interesting. ABBA was a mega hit group. Only the BEATLES have more hits. Yes they were two couples. Agnetha is the blonde, Ani-Frid (Frida) is the brunette. Benny is the pianist, Bjorn is the guitarist. Interesting fact, Frida's mother was Norwegian during Nazi occupied times and her father a German soldier. The Nazis were trying to creat a master race called the ariyan race. Frida was a product of that program. Her grandmother snuck into Sweden with her to prevent the Germans from taking her and children of German soldiers were treated terribly after they left. So she grew up in Sweden

They have way more hits than this really highlighted (around the world they caught on a lot more, but this was more US focussed), as well as great/magical songs that didn't end up as hits as back then you could only choose a few songs from an album as singles to sell for a potential hit. But truly most of their last 5/6 albums were amazing, with their first two of their 8 albums being fun and still having some great songs in there. No bad songs which is crazy for the 100 songs or so released!
I reccomend Move on, or a live one: Does your mother know and Hole in your soul live at wembley: ruclips.net/video/NfZBuCHF38s/видео.html

That is a very basic history - so much more to the ABBA story than they show here of course.
