김소향 (Kim, So-hyang) is a South Korean singer. Her stage name is 소향 (Sohyang). She's up there with Whitney Houston, Mariah Carey, and Céline Dion, according to David Foster, who worked with all of them, plus other big names in the music industry, such as Aretha Franklin, Barbra Streisand, and Michael Jackson. In fact, many vocal coaches and critics call her the Queen, and Dimash the King.
Here are several links to excellent performances by Sohyang. Many are from competitions where she pulls out all the stops and goes into vocal beast mode. The last 5 are more restrained. You can alternate between the styles, just to experience the contrasts and see her range of abilities. All are live, except for a music video of "Never Enough" (since we can never get enough of Sohyang).

BTW, Whitney's former manager saw the DMC Festival video of Sohyang singing "I Have Nothing", and contacted Oprah Winfrey, who in turn, contacted David Foster. They were all amazed. He invited her to sing on his tour in Asia. She did 8 shows in 4 days in Tokyo. Foster co-wrote that song. He arranged and produced it for Whitney for her album, and her performance in "The Bodyguard". Foster has won 16 Grammy Awards, including 3 for Producer of the Year, and has been nominated a total of 47 times.
It's unfortunate that you've blocked my initial comment, which has details about Sohyang and a list of links to a dozen of her most spectacular performances.

How come no love for her back-up singers?!! They compliment her so well. I hear them way more than the instruments you praise so freely. Does this mean you think this performance would be just as good without them?

@davidcochran6291: Her voice and vocal techniques are first and foremost noted. But unfortunately, lots of other parts are taken for granted. Few reviewers comment about all the details, such as her clothes, makeup, gestures, emotions, confidence, arrangement, band, choir/back-up singers, staging, background video, lighting, camera work, etc. This is an epic performance with great production values.
If you want to hear a legendary voice, morissette amon. Akin ka na Lang performed live and seated, on Wish 107.5 Fm radio. It's already legendary

She is one of the greatest vocalist in the world.But She wasn't known as well as popular because She sing for GOD and Comfort people who has hardtime Not for fame or money. ..In her youth, she turned down all offers from mega agencies for her beliefs...and now she is 45years old. .She has so many legendary live performances .
She always sings with sincerity whenever and wherever. So it comforts those who listen to her song...That's why I love her...And her singing skills are the best, not to mention...

She's absolutely great. Her stated goal is to use her voice to comfort people going through difficult times. Appropriately enough, I first discovered Sohyang in May of 2021 while I was recovering from my first (and hopefully only) major surgery. I was unable to move much, watching youtube, and feeling a bit sorry for myself when Sohyang popped up in my recommendations. She achieved her goal that night as her voice made me feel better.

Welcome to Sohyang's world. I see you there in a comment saying you thought English was her first language. No, Korean is her first language, she taught herself English by watching TV. I am pretty sure she is brilliant as she not only speaks multiple languages and sings; she also draws, composes, teaches music at South Korean universities and has written over 13 books.
Little background, Sohyang is 45 yrs old and is a gospel/ contemporary singer / songwriter.
She is a wife and cancer survivor but can't have children. Medical issues have plagued her over the yrs, mainly pneumonia, but she just keeps trucking. I could go on & on, but if your a fan you'll do some digging on your own. 😏♥️🎙😎🤘BTW, her rendition of " I Will Always Love You, live from " Begin Again Korea, " is one of my favorites. 😮 She sings the Saxophone solo, chefs kiss !

Sohyang is a great singer and I learned a lot from her. What's important is that she sings with the right vocal technique (placement and direction of her voice, intonation, support, etc) that makes her voice so beautiful, stable, clear, resonates, and she can reach those high notes properly. It's unfortunate that many other singers think that their voices are "good enough", but they end up harming their own voices because they don't learn the proper vocal techniques.
Hi Pricilia! Yes you are right about the vocal damage that can occur over a long period of time abusing their voice. I actually had a node at one point and had to do vocal therapy. It wasn't from singing so much as just talking loudly so much as a band teacher. But singers have to be careful because the damage can be permanent.

The proper pronunciation is done by the host who introduces Sohyang a few seconds into the video. "young" isn't exactly right because the sound should have the "ah" component (or phoneme), instead of "uh". When Koreans say her name, I hear "SOH" "he"-"yahng" with "he" being very brief. Use Google Translate in Detect Language mode to pronounce her stage name, 소향 .

Just to add to everything you have said, Sohyang is also responsible for this arrangement, she is so talented. Abig welcome, at last, to the best female singer on the planet, the queen where Dimash is king.
I look forward to more of your reactions to Sohyang, she never disappoints & for me, & I am English & do not speak a word of Korean, one of the most amazing things about sohyang is that she is technically brilliant but she transmits the emotion of a song like no other & quite remarkeably even when singing in a language you are not familiar with, how is that possible. Even when subtitles are provided, many, myself included, have said that they have been so mesmerised by her performance that they haven’t even looked at the subs. Another small point to mention is that Sohyang speaks English fluently so when she’s singing a song in English she doesn’t sing with an obvious accent like so many other Asian singers do.
She can also sing any genre & sing it well, rock,pop, blues/jazz, the big power ballads, (semi classical),& believe it or not, this angel on earth can RAP!! & there are video’s available to support this, but her heart lies in gospel music & she often has elements of gospel in her arrangements of songs that aren’t usually associated with the genre in their original form. I have not yet seen her sing full on opera or country but am in no doubt that she would be a success if she did take on either of those genre’s.
She is always a surprise because she is far more talented than what you may see. By that I mean that just because she is capable of doin something doesn’t mean that she always puts it in a song. She doesn’t just show off everything she is capable of just because she can, she will only put something in one of her re-arrangements of someone else’s song if it enhances the song, she is far too good a musician & far too respectful to make someone else’s work worse. Sometimes she will make many changes to the original, like with ‘bridge over troubled water’ & sometimes she will make very little change, but always it’s what’s best for the song so she can be both
respectful to the original at the same time make it her own.
She is also a published author of fiction & by day a university lecturer, in music obviously!!
Finally, as always, I recommend that you look at her back story because I am sure it will make you appreciate just how special this woman is & may go some way to explaining why she isn’t the worldwide superstar her talent surely merits. She has been made offers from all the big record companies for a number of years, which she has always declined, instead choosing to follow her own path & do what’s she wants when she wants but this lady isn’t driven by dollars & bright lights but I suppose she is coming from a place that most of us wouldn’t understand & reading some of her backstory should explain this.
I know you will get detailed lists, with links, to probably 99% of everything available from Sohyang on RUclips, because some of her greatest admirers always provide this when we welcome someone new into the magical world of Sohyang, so please use their links but it really doesn’t matter which performance you see next because this beautiful soul only does ‘amazing’

I am glad you enjoyed her. Instead of signing with large corporations, she only does 2 or 3 concerts per year and keeps her singing life rather simple. Quite a few have said she is one of, if not the, best female singers on the planet. She does give a ton of emotion to her audience. I can't remember the note, but she has one of the highest belts around (flat G7?). Anyways, an amazing singer and thanks for bringing forth some of the background instrumentation. So Hyang does her own compositions, and tends to start out with that quiet introduction and then building it up almost a gospel style. I forgot to add in that she is Korean, but her English diction is absolutely perfect, you can understand every word. In the early part where she sings "I will dry them", listen to the "dry", she makes it so clear in a whispery way yet it would be a very easy word to stumble on. I love Soyuang. She has impeccable vocals, only in the same class as a few (Dimash, Vitas, etc.) you need to check out her rendition of Oh Holy Night (10 years ago vs last year) I love her new one it is my favorite song right now. Or even You Raise Me Up. That one she sings is a must see. In regard to Vitas; check out Dedication, Opera 2, then check out Dimash’s cover of Opera 2, then any of Dimash (SOS, Sinful Passion, etc) have funnnnnnn!!!!!

I recommend her other cover songs, "Lean on Me" and "You Raise Me Up" from the same TV show. In "Lean on Me," you can witness all the techniques that can be done with the human voice, astonishing high notes, and the presence of Michael Bolton sitting in the audience. "You Raise Me Up" will simply deliver the most touching rendition that can move your heart. There might be some singers who can hit high notes like her, but Sohyang can make me shed tears. I really enjoyed your analysis of this wonderful human being how I am sure will richly enhance your musical journey on your channel I am a little disappointed that you failed to mention the backing singers who I think are some of the best in the world but that aside I am glad you have found one of the finest artists of the last fifty years,you will get a million requests for more so I will stick my two cents worth in with them,I can see right off you enjoy the instrumentation a lot so I can confidently point you to Freedom which is a funky jazz christian song the vocals from Sohyang and the two guys from Petra are fantastic but it's all the stuff in the background I'm sure you will get a kick from,but if it is true greatness you are looking for the it has to be EVERYONE,which is a vocal and emotional rollercoaster that I don't believe that you'll have witnessed for many years.
You put your finger on what those of us who have been following her for years have always said - yes, she's an incredible singer with a gift that very few people on this planet have, but what make her truly special is her ability to evoke emotional reactions in the audience via storytelling. She never comes off as a diva who is trying to impress the audience, her performances are more like community events that she is inviting the audience to experience with her. She also has a fundamental goodness that is ever-present and impossible (imo) to fake. Taken together with the obvious vocal talents she really is once in a generation performer and musician.
Now that you listened to one of the world's greats, you might want to listen to another world in MORISSETTE AMON LAMAR from the Philippines, SOHYANG and MORISSETTE are untouchable when it comes to live performances, the rest just can't stand up to these two magnificent ladies, with MORISSETTE it would be nice to start with the greatest rendition of O HOLY NIGHT she performed for the FAVOR CHURCH Christian community concert on Christmas Eve 2020, like SOHYANG she will blow you away, there's a reason why these two go under the radar and that reason is that they both don't go for the fame and the fortune, they sing to bring comfort to people 🇬🇧🤩👌❤️

Sohyang is one of a kind, highest fully chest connected belting I've heard with any human, and still so warm, tender at moments, great use of dynamics and a really angelic tone. Amazing journey of endurance and hope as well, it's incredible what this woman went through on regard of serious health issues... really an inspirational human being.! We all wonder if Sohyang is human or from another planet. Current odds are that she’s from another planet, with an outside chance she’s actually an angel come down from Heaven. 😇 We have never heard anyone sing like her, or be able to hold an audience in the palm of her hand until she lets them go. Her voice is, as one person described it, like liquid gold. Perfection in clarity and pitch, and she doesn’t fade in the upper octaves, which is startling when you hear her hit those 5th and 6th octave notes with such _POWER_ it actually gives everyone goose bumps-and makes us bald guys’ hair stand on end! As she says, her voice “is from God.” She does all the musical arrangements herself, with the input of her in-law family and musical assistants, teaches vocal technique at a South Korean university and speaks five languages: Korean, English, French, Vietnamese and Chinese, as well as reading Greek!
Let me catch my breath. OK.
She is a cancer survivor from uterine cancer at the age of 20, just after getting married, and states very plainly that God saved her life due to the prayers of her church. But this left her without the ability to have children so she decided to dedicate her life to being a Contemporary Christian Gospel singer and has refused recording contracts from the biggest corporations in the world. She only wants to sing for charities, churches and while doing missionary work, to strengthen those suffering through difficult times. David Foster, Josh Groban, Michael Bolton and others have all eagerly worked with her when they were in Asia.
She contracted hepatitis B from a blood transfusion during her cancer surgery and it clings to her to this day. She just turned 45 on April 5, 2023, though in Korean culture she would be 46 because you are deemed to be one year old when you are born. She was about 37 when she sang this version of “Arirang Alone,” their unofficial national anthem based on a 600 year old folk song expressing their desire to reunify north and south: vimeo.com/308253527
While being sick with pneumonia eight times from 2016 through to 2020, and considering giving up singing altogether, she decided to enter a televised singing contest called “King of the Masked Singers” in 2017 and won six consecutive times, which has catapulted her into international attention from the performances being posted on RUclips.
Whitney Houston’s former manager saw her on RUclips and showed her to Oprah Winfrey, who brought her to David Foster’s attention. Foster then contacted Sohyang and went to Japan in order to have her perform eight concerts with him at Tokyo’s famous Blue Note Club in late-2018. For those who don't know, David Foster was Whitney Houston's producer for some of her songs, wrote "I Have Nothing," her most iconic song, and is the most famous and influential music producer in the world. He places Sohyang right beside Whitney and the rest of the top tier divas.

In a South Korean television interview Sohyang conceded that she struggled with her desire for fame for a number of years, going into the basement in her home numerous times and closing the door so she could complain vehemently to God that He was holding her back from becoming famous due to her health problems and other unforeseeable events. Then she later saw a Korean TV drama where the talented daughter of a very successful businessman was positive she would take over when her father retired. But he left the management of the company to a woman she hated, so she had a fit and lay kicking and screaming on the floor. What can one say about such a person? She is a literal Wonder Woman! And we need about a billion more just like her! And whether Sohyang likes it or not, fame has found her, run her over and then backed up and run over her again!

Sohyang is just the most amazing singer, Christian and human being. She is beautiful both inside and out, and so humble and genuine, with a stage charisma, facial expressions and smile that is off the charts.
In Korean dictionaries 소향--Sohyang--has several meanings.
• First is a type of Korean traditional music.
• Second is to burn incense on a burner.
• Third is to go toward.
But these meanings are rarely used today. Sohyang is also the name of a heroine in a Korean traditional novel. Yet for the definitive answer Sohyang has stated in an interview that her name means "enjoy the light." Her grandmother named her.

Well, one more gush. In an interview with a Turkish music producer Sohyang's assistants revealed (a bit to her chagrin, as she is a self-effacing person) that she can hit Eb7 and D7 in practise. However, she never goes above the 6th octave in performances. Since she starts at D3 that is more than a 4 octave range ... so how about them apples???! Oh, I just remembered, she is also a published fantasy novelist and has a theological treatise on the Book of Revelation in print. In addition, she is a very good stage actress, which she proved by playing Julie Andrews’ part in the South Korean stage production of “The Sound of Music.” Moreover, she sang the “Moana” part in the Korean version of the Disney film, does the musical vocals for many South Korean television dramas, and is a talented artist and cartoonist. She taught herself English by watching Disney's "The Little Mermaid" 'about one hundred times' when she was just a kid, speaks English with a _perfect_ North American accent and has an outgoing and bubbly personality.
She can also play the piano and guitar. Is there anything this genius level woman can’t do? Ironically, Sohyang stated in another interview that both she and her in-law family were surprised to discover that she could sing so excellently!
Though she is maybe 5' 4" and only about 100 pounds, Sohyang simply transcends the thresholds of music and takes you there with her. She becomes the song when she sings it, and then re-emerges when she is done. An experience like no other. I don’t know what else to say. I’ve spent _entire days_ listening to her, and shed more than a few tears of joy along the way.
I really must also compliment the choir, orchestra and audio/video production people Sohyang works with. They are all top notch from what I can see and hear, and that is important to note as these are _essential_ elements of any great musical production. The Korean people are easily as talented as anyone else.

Sohyang (pronounced as “So-Young”) she is from South Korea. I’m 73 years old and to me she is the greatest singer I’ve ever heard in my life. She not only a great singer but a beautiful person both inside and out. She first began singing in her local community, with no aspirations of pursuing a career as a professional singer. She was offered numerous contracts from major record companies, but she turned them down, because it would interfere with the plans God had for her. She is a devout Christian and has said that her goal in life is to use her voice to comfort people who are going through difficult times. She knows what hard times is like, her parents divorced when she was in her third year of high school and due to this, she experienced a lot of financial difficulties and was often very sad and she said that it was music that helped her through these difficult times. At the age of twenty she got married and soon after was diagnosed with uterine cancer, which she was able to survive, and she gives the credit to God. She is also an author of children books since 2013. Another thing is that she does all the arrangements for the songs she sings. SHE IS THE BEST EVER
The proper pronunciation is done by the host who introduces Sohyang a few seconds into the video. "young" isn't exactly right because the sound should have the "ah" component (or phoneme), instead of "uh". When Koreans say her name, I hear "SOH" "he"-"yahng" with "he" being very brief. Use Google Translate in Detect Language mode to pronounce her stage name, 소향 .

She's up there with Whitney Houston, Mariah Carey, and Céline Dion, according to David Foster, who worked with all of them, plus other big names in the music industry, such as Aretha Franklin, Barbra Streisand, Stevie Wonder, and Michael Jackson. In fact, many vocal coaches and critics call her the Queen, and Dimash the King.

BTW, Whitney's former manager saw the DMC Festival video of Sohyang singing "I Have Nothing", and contacted Oprah Winfrey, who in turn, contacted David Foster. They were all amazed. Foster invited Sohyang to sing on his tour in Asia. She did 8 shows in 4 days in Tokyo. He and his ex-wife wrote that song. He co-arranged and produced it for Whitney for her album, and her performance in "The Bodyguard". Foster has won 16 Grammy Awards, including 3 for Producer of the Year, and has been nominated a total of 47 times.
