- Recent snowstorms of 2017 winter have been dumping a lot of snow onto Western US. California has gotten few new records set this year, and it definitely shows, while you come up on a trail with an 8 foot wall facing you.

Ah, I see. It looked like they were trying to do a water crossing, got in and had trouble getting out. I've been in that situation and know what it's like to start thinking about opening the door and getting out... Besides, I'm pretty sure nature is gonna survive this little mishap. :) Just saying....
this was no water crossing, just a small run off created by melting snow... being that it got dammed with all that snow, plus us mixing it up & melting more snow into it, created that puddle even bigger...
This is no waste of nature by any means...

pretty sure I pulled one of the guys with the four runners from the very bottom of the campgrounds all the way up the hill after he flooded his motor going through the river. With his climbing rope at that LOL pretty funny

Don't really know much about offroad and driving in snow, but I was wondering why nobody was using spikes to drive true this snow.
I guess they aren't helpfull in the deep snow?

@@budnixon it are little metal pins on the tires, I know that they are used in Norway so I was wondering if they would be any good in deep snow. Just wondering.. , never drove spikes myself.
@@kvpi727 different state have different laws regarding studded tires (metal pins). sudded tires are good for ice, not heavy wet snow.

I came here during the snow I want to say in march earlier this year, BIIIIIIIG mistake my 3rd gen 4runner on 35s didn't have a fun time. Met the 4th gen 4runner though that was cool.
with that said, I would love to go with you guys this snow season.
I'm in Oregon nowadays, but in Cali - not sure who all snow wheels... :)

Николай, вопрос дилетанта: почему вы не пользуетесь цепями и лебедками?
для передвижения по снегу важно широкое пятно шины (т.е. низкое давление), а цепи ограничивают это, и от них толк только при твердой обледеневшей почве/покрытии... в нашем случае не те условия, поэтому без цепей...
а лебедка есть, когда нужно то и ее в ход пускаем

What happened to the guy with snow chains in the beginning?
he is a perfect example why roads get closed...
he "thought" he could make it far into this snow and do whatever... got stuck shortly into the trail - called out 4x4 tow service - and now had to pay for his uneducated decision - I heard it was like $1500 for the service
@@budnixon yep, they gate all the national forest roads during the winter in the NC mountains, and it is mostly because of this same thing

I don't understand why you are not carrying tire chains with you as well. A tire chain like the RUD Profilegreisteg PRo on all axles of your vehicles would be better than just running low tire pressure.
because tire chains dont work in all conditions... I've found this to be best option...
I have yet to find a condition that the proper chain will not help you to over come. However, you cannot use twist link in soft powder and expect much results. You need something with a sufficient increase in surface area to act like a paddle in the snow. The Supergreifsteg is good but even better are Profilgreifsteg Pro from RUD because both of those types of tires chains have incredible amounts of surface area. I prefer them over reducing the air-pressure because A) re-inflating 10 tires a truck is a pain. and B) the increase of contact area on a 12:00 R24.5 tire is not as much as you think it would be. So, putting on a few tire chains is faster and ultimately more beneficial. On my M35A2 I use a set of three and on my work trucks a set of two.
I plan on putting 14.5R20 on the M35A2 with Profilgreifsteg Pro tires all round and that will give the truck the proper flotation capabilities along with the chains it will increase the traction accordingly to over come nearly any obstacle.
There are many opinions, as many people... I'm not saying that chains dont work, I'm saying that I find it more fun and easier for me to do it without the chains.
Snow is very different in every part of the world... :)
Maybe some day I'll see you on the trail.... I've been meaning to take a trip out to the Cascades in the Duke.... Then we can compare Lockers and Chains on three axles v. Lockers and lower pressure high flotation tires on 2 axles...
I never get into comparing... its pointless, unless its a same setup completely, down to exact weight of the vehicle, otherwise all the variables make it an unfair game...
Some like peaches, some like pears... no matter how sour one or the other might be! :)
