Capacitor based controls tend to be tuned to control one fan only. Occasionally you can find them tuned for two or even four fans with higher cap values, but those controls tend to only have three speeds rather than four

I've used that Westinghouse control with only one unit before, and it was a little better, but there was still quite a distance between the 3rd speed and full power. Ultimately I think I will have to build a custom capacitor control for this application.

It’s usually the capacitor values used in the controls. Since they’re generically tuned for many different fan models, I’ve found that they often don’t give the best speeds. In this case, it looks like the capacitor values are a bit too low for two fans, hence the slow low, med, high relative to the max speed (which bypasses the capacitors). A custom speed controller with your own capacitor values would definitely work better. Been thinking about trying that for some my own ceiling fans too.

I think a custom control is definitely something worth trying to build.

@@JordanU what 4 speed fan switch is good?

  • @seanm5761

Have you tried the Hunter original control from Hunter
It’s rated for 2.0 amps which might give a good range of speeds on these! But you won’t have 4 speeds .
The 4 speed controls are not meant for two fans (clearly) but I Alao have an odd ball control
It’s a 4 speed meant fit multiple fans by Emerson it’s rated for 5 amp if you’d be interested

No, but I don't expect different results. It's something with the way these fans handle, I've used just one on these controls before and had the same issue with the lack of variance in the speeds.

I have the 2 Leviton Illumatech controls and fully agree that the fan speeds are poorly spaced with low speeds too low overall. Moreover, I had to replace one of them which failed when all the the firsr three control positions would function only at the very low speed ...and max was full speed. Upon disassembly two of the capacitors were swollwen with one actually split!

That's certainly disappointing to hear. I had hoped for better, this wasn't a particularly cheap control.

Use Wago Lever Nuts for your connections if your swapping out dimmers for testing, i have a friend who is a 50 year+ electrical engineer and he says the Wago's are far safer than wire nuts and will never ever loosen up or pop off compared to the old back stab plugs that old fashioned old timer US electricians hate.

    • @JordanU

Those may be fine for electronics and low voltage, but I would never use those for a proper 120 AC connection like this.

@@JordanU - Your talking to master electrician here... You need to do some research and talk with some German and European electricians about wago''s, i have used them since they came out instead of wire nuts and i and every electrician i know who has used them has VERY VERY RARELY ever had a call back because a genuine wago failed. most of the cases we found where one did fail is because the wire was not stripped off enough for the clamp to make a tight connection or it was a fake Chinese wago knockoff. wire nuts are banned here in most of Europe because electricity vibrates and eventually knocks them loose. I just recently replaced a 30 year old ceiling fan in a customers dining room and the ceiling is up 20 feet in the air. Guess what the fan is wired into the pancake box with Wago's, and i inspected them and both the wago's and wiring looked and tested perfectly fine.
I know the reason you don't like them is because of the infamous back stabbed plugs, which failed miserably and i would never back wire a plug due to the contact area being too little on the backstab. Trust me the Wago's have far better and larger area of conductivity than a back stab. You need to do some research... There are electricians on RUclips that have proven if installed correctly to code and not overloaded... the Wago's are just as safe as wire nuts.
