5 years later and your video is still inspiring people with your diy cutter. I just used your design and modified it. I used precision band music wire found on Amazon for the amazing strength and I put an aluminum angle metal on the bottom and cut my grooves in it for the wire which prevents the wear and tear on the wood. Wish I could upload photos under this comment. Thank you for your idea.
I wish my wife had hobbies like this because I would have enjoyed it so much building her stuff like this. I'm the crafty person in the house and have a lot of hobbies including soap making.
Great idea, thanks so much for this video. I'd like to make a suggestion. Get a metal rod that will fit thought the eye of your screws. Turn your screws so they all line up and slide the rod though it. It will keep them from moving when you put pressure on them.
Hi Jan - just wanted to drop you a line to say well done on your video. There's a lot of advice out there on how to build a soap cutter, but yours is far the most useful and HONEST. I'm a scientist by training, and I value the ability to be critical of your own work. Apart from your excellent design, you have edited the video to tell people what worked/didn't work in "real time". Giving such valuable IP for free is what makes the interwebs so useful for everyone. You've inspired me to do the same...now I just need to come up with an idea that someone else might find useful. :)
Thank you so much for your compliment. On my channel I just do videos of what interests me. Unfortunately that’s not a very good way to grow a channel because my topics are to broad but that’s what I enjoy. I have a suggestion you might want to look into as it’s something I have considered is live videos. For example. Live music streaming or white back ground noise. So the work once and let it go. Hope you find your niche. Jan
Very Handy. Making one for my wife (out of hardwood). Few other suggestions (which I am going to try). 1. Instead of using Screw Eyes with wood thread (the rings you use) Use ones with machine thread and a nut/washer/lock-washer. Drill the holes for the eyes all the way through the side boards and use nuts on the inside. I may have to make it a hair wider to avoid the ends of the nuts hitting the soap. With a nut and lock-washer they should loosen a lot less. That's on one side only. Other side gets screw pegs - "L" shaped pegs like on a key rack. With the wire tied off around them, only 1 side will need tightening. (Could even loop the wire around a shallow screw and just screw it into the side). Or, if you can find a cast off guitar or 2... tuning pegs (new ones are too expensive, about $4 -$5 each) 2. The angle brackets are a must for your construction, as with end screws only, the corners will "rack" and not stay at a right angle over time. Kudos on this. Great Job. 3. Getting a foam kneeling pad to cut on, hoping that the wires will continue to go down and it will push the soap up making the final cut through the bottom. 4. You are right about using a finer blade to cut the notches. I'm using a dremel tool. Just an FYI your saw blade is 1/8" thick... when making cuts, allow for that. :) Post pictures when I'm done. I LOVE your creativity and ingenuity. ZJ
Hi...New sub here! I really love the non-scripted feel of this video! Great tutorial.. thank you! I thought I would share my experience with fellow soap makers, in hopes that y'all don't have to go through the headache that I have. Right now, I just make soap for my family and friends (trying to perfect my recipe and build inventory before selling) I purchased a handmade wood soap mold from someone on Etsy, after doing much research. The price wasn't something I was happy about, but like you, my soap showed the "homemade cut" look. The wood soap mold came with a mold box made of wood and high density polyethylene plastic, in which to cut my soap. Well.. after using that cutter once.. I realized that cutting the soap with a knife would have made my soap look better. I was not happy with the "professional" cutting box at all! But after 2 years of trial and error, and many dollars spent, I have come to the conclusion that those $200-300 loaf cutters would have been better to start with, And maybe I could have saved all the time and money!
I just want to say thank you for making this video and even telling us what you did wrong or what you should have changed I went out and got all material and will be making my cutter this week!
Thank you for your post. From experience, guitar strings are also excellent for soap cutting. The steel strings from Home Depot or lowes are not strong enough!!! Excellent job, Jan!!!! God bless the works of your hands!!!!
Great tutorial - very innovative! I'm going to try to do one with interior plywood (to avoid the warp you warned about) and a set of guitar string tuner keys to see how it works. Please keep the videos coming. Your ideas and hard work are really appreciated.
Coolerz! I am always up to making my own things. I made a loom out of canvas frame. Lolz! 4 sizes. Ty for sharing. I am interested in making my own soap loaves. 💕💕💕
Hi thank you for the video, I know it been 8 years since this video, If you decide to make another soap cutter or use the other side of the soap cutter box you can make holes with a drill instead of placing the wire over the box that way the wire doesn't cut into the wood and you have more strength in straightening the wire with out it loosing it up.
@@jeannetteizquierdo215 thanks for the suggestion. Actually I haven’t used this cutter in years. Now I use my cheese slicer modification. It’s much easier and it doesn’t matter to me that the slices may not be perfectly identical. It seems to be trendy to have rigged looking soap. Here is a link to my diy cheese slicer modification. ruclips.net/video/N6tWnp6lMY4/видео.htmlsi=jkmV7h9AkbQpIO7F
Hello Jan, Thanks so much for sharing your Soap Cutter DIY idea. I thought it was very helpful and I love using the multi cutter for my loafs. It makes soap cutting so much easier and my bars are cut precisely. I did have to fine tone the wires after every use, but that is a small price to pay in achieving my goal of multi-cutting. A roll of galvanized wire is so economical that one could replace any of the wires as needed. I would definitely recommend your DIY Soap cutter to all!
So after several usage of my DIY soap cutter, I decided to rewire my cutter using Guitar string and Guitar Tuning Pegs Tuners... I will write a follow-up as to rather or not this fixed the loose wire situation!
Thank you! I've sent your video to my brother in law to make for me. I'm looking forward to receiving it, he will have fun making it 😀 Thanks again, I really appreciate you sharing your project xx
Jan, I love the fact that you are a thinker. You went through a process of "well that didn't work, let me try this". In the end you have a great tool for the job. Thanks for the inspiration. Subscribed and going to check out your soap videos. ✌🏻❤
Might be able to make a peg dope. I use it on my fiddle/violin to help hold the pegs. To keep them from turning. Same concept. I use beeswax, coconut oil and talcum powder to make my peg dope. Just rub it on the threads and insert back into the wood. Works good on the wood pegs. Excellent how to video.
Jan, I really like your tutorial style. You have a natural speaking style, and obviously confident in giving your opinions and sharing your insights. I was a bit surprised at the price of wire-type soap cutters available on some soap supply sites; I really would not want to devalue anyone's time as they take time to make, but it just seemed a bit too crazy to spend over $200 US for a hobbiest who enjoys making soap for gift giving.. especially since reviews were mixed and I couldn't be certain of easily returning it because I live in Canada. I know I am not a cheap person, and will spend on things that have no substitutes, but in this case, I thought this can probably be made if I am patient and careful. I thought "there's got to be someone out there who has DIY'd this" so I am happy your video came up! I like researching what others have done and then tweaking or improving upon that, but you seem to have done a lot of that for me. I swear I was wondering about how you were going to handle elevating the soap when you pushed the wires into the loaf, and then you mentioned it!!! You are definitely a very good problem solver. You're creative, resourceful and practical, but as someone said below, your best trait is that you are able to critique your own thoughts and work to continue improving on your technique(s) and materials. Excellent Jan, really.
Tips/tricks. You can use a good knife and baton(thats what its called) the knife instead of cutting with a saw. After all you only need a groove for the wire to sit in. You can also find Japanese pull saws that have a much thinner kerf than the saw you used. Bearclaw makes a fine crosscut with no set that would be ideal.
Great DIY soap cutter and cost cutter. Love the video and especially the antics of your son in the background at 17:17. That's something my daughter would do 😂
Thank you for the inspiration my husband might make a bigger one than the one that you made ... he wants to make as much soap as possible in one go ... So making soap in bulk 😊😊
you definitely deserve a thumbs up. great suggestions, and a appreciated demonstration on how to make the soap cutter. although I more than likely I'll take your suggestion of having someone make it for me, ( with the cheese cutting wire) Thank you
I am planning on making a cutter for myself, and I am going to try to use guitar strings (since I keep hanging on to all my old ones). As long as they are all the same size string, it should work out.
Awesome! I always try to make things myself, whether it works perfectly or not! It feels great to create something. I too refused to pay 2-300 for a soap cutter. Here in Canada with shipping it wnds up being closer to 4-500. I bought a $12 mitre box but my soap loaf is angled, it is actually a bread loaf so it didnt quite fit in, but I can turn the soap on it’s side and do it. I will definitely give this a try.
The good thing is the Results of your idea 💡 that save you time and money at the end. And yes you're right we never think we are gonna like it so much, that we keep wasting money and putting those cutters that we use first on the side bcuz there after we end up thinking bigger so we end up paying double for the trouble but at the end of it, then your minds spinning for something handy and not that expensive that really works! And you did your best job and the best thing you did yourself. So that worth two big 👍👍 thumbs -up! You Nail 💅 it, Good job
Thanks so much for sharing this! It gives me a way to create a cutter for the loaf mold and the slab mold I have. I appreciate your willingness to share what you learned with others because I can't afford the more expensive ones either but I can make this. Good job.
hi jane, this is a great idea, for those that are very handy. i like this idea, i'm telling you ,instead of buying these expensive soap cutters, it's the best, and you know what, i have at home these pli wood, and gauge wire for cheese ready , i always like to keep ,handy materials around in case of.
I purchased Bobs one wire cutter for soap. I actually get a lot of joy from cutting one bar at a time. That is my reward in the end. His one wire cutter is $80.00 and I will tell you it works so wonderful. He will make a special order for you as well. He states it takes weeks to get your cutter, however he had mine delivered to my door in a week. If you have a larger budget than me, than you can purchase his cutters with multiple wires. Here is his link. www.etsy.com/shop/budhaffner
Thanks for sharing. I wish I was handy enough to do this, I desperately need a soap cutter but like you, I'm not willing to pay $200 right now. So I'm just using a cheese cutter.
Very creative!! I’m going to try to tackle this myself! I have a lot of wood and screws laying around, plus I’m sure there is something I can make the grooves with, so I just have to get the wire, flat corner brackets and the hooks! Thank you so much!
Luv your creative flair. Looking forward to my next challenge of making soap and am already working out in my head how can I make my own soap cutter. Have already made my own soap loaf boxes. I applaud you for giving it a go! Thanks so much. Youve inspired me for sure. All the best from NZ
i designed and built my own soap box and lid. the other day i paid 42 total for supplies but its better than paying the prices that have for multi loaf boxes plus shipping. today i fashioned a loaf cutter out of two curved piece of wood from a broken chair and guitar strings i had laying around. im glad to see this video i have some spare wood and eye hooks. just need some more wire. call me crazy but i wont pay for something i can make myself. it doesnt matter how much money I have, I refuse.
I think if you put a long pipe through the hooks the size of the hole it will prevent the screws from turning when you press on the soap. For the height of the surface for cutting the soap should be the height of the width of the 1×3. That's only my opinion. Good luck
Just a heads up those were wire cutters between 12:16 and 12:20 you said the right tool that could have been used though a good set of pliers could have been used to turn the eyehooks to tighten the wire just right using the same method
Yes I thought of that because I play guitar. Let me know how it works. I did change my wires to cheese cutting wire and it works wonderfully, nice and tight.
It may be a good idea to wear safety glasses when using. Like a guitar string the wire can snap and hit you in the face when your looking down while cutting. That being said. Bravo! Great job! 🌺
I haven’t been able to hear the audio cause I’m at work but I am looking forward to doing this. I am a messy cutter and would love to have more precision in cutting the soaps.
I have Buds single wire too. it's awesome. and such a fair price. I give you so much credit for your hard work on your cutter. your so kind to share. love your video's :)))
This is a really nice soap cutter though. You did very well. Thanks for this video angel, the soap cutters are very expensive. I need one and when I saw the price $367.00 I was like that's just too much money. Thank you again for this video. Blessings and Light sister☺
I saw the prices and instantly said nope i will build my own. all i did was check out the demensions of soap box and designed my own. from that i was able to measure my cutter. $200 is insane.
you are a genius! thank you! i am diy er and have all the supplies somewhere ( that may take a while to look for ) but I love this video thank you so much for sharing, i am gathering supplies to start my soap making journey soon, its a wee bit overwhelming but fun too.( i am in to all organic food you look super healthy and in shape good life style i may hop to your other channel too)
I'm thinking that the wire used for MIG welding would work also. It's pretty high tensile wire, so it can be tightened quite a bit without stretching and it is pretty cheap -- basically free if her husband has a well stocked workshop. :) Then again, if she had a husband with a well stocked workshop, she probably wouldn't be hacking this thing together. :)
HI Jan, Just saw your video on Pinterests from someone who saved it. Wanted to drop by here to tell you I enjoyed you video very much. Great soap cutter, I think my hubby needs to make that for me :-). Hey the kid in the background was hilarious, I busted out laughing. Thanks for sharing Jan. Darlene Nova Scotia
Thanks for sharing this Jan! I also don't want to spend hundreds of dollars on a soap cutter - especially having to order it from the states - doubles the price! :(
Great idea 👍🏼Iam new to soap making & I do have trouble cutting soap actually i have ordered silicone soap loof but for now iam using ice cream boxes to pour my cold prossesd, so that makes it very hard to cut my soap & the soap comes out too soft that make me so nervous while cutting it.
@amber ... Maybe consider lining the boxes with freezer paper. I utilize used USPS flat rate boxes and used Amazon boxes to create slab molds. I line them with freezer paper, shiny side toward the soap. I reinforce the shape with packing tape around the outside of the boxes. I hoard heavyduty cardboard, especially those used for TV, appliances, athletic shoes, etc. So far I have utilized my DIY slab molds at least 15 times each and they remain sturdy. I have made some loaf molds, they are also doing well. I usually find it more efficient to pour slabs, for me it's more of an assembly line process.
Oh My 17:17-17:20 LMAO! That just totally made my day, so I had to click to subscribe!! And right at the beginning you guys both had the exact same looks on your faces, it made me smile! :D And I love your design on the cutter. I might just be inspired to try my hand at making this someday.

Luv your creative flair. Looking forward to my next challenge of making soap and am already working out in my head how can I make my own soap cutter. Have already made my own soap loaf boxes.
I applaud you for giving it a go! Thanks so much. Youve inspired me for sure.
All the best from NZ
Thanks for watching. I have a video making Lard soap. It turned out so nice. A good soap to start with. It’s easy and fast. Happy soaping.
i designed and built my own soap box and lid. the other day i paid 42 total for supplies but its better than paying the prices that have for multi loaf boxes plus shipping. today i fashioned a loaf cutter out of two curved piece of wood from a broken chair and guitar strings i had laying around. im glad to see this video i have some spare wood and eye hooks. just need some more wire. call me crazy but i wont pay for something i can make myself. it doesnt matter how much money I have, I refuse.
I think if you put a long pipe through the hooks the size of the hole it will prevent the screws from turning when you press on the soap. For the height of the surface for cutting the soap should be the height of the width of the 1×3. That's only my opinion. Good luck
Well done Jan, thank you for challenging and inspiring me to try my hands on making soap cutter.
Hi jen I just want to say you are so inspiring . your videos have helped.me be more creative in soap making . thank you so much !!
thank you so much for showing this video I made two with your instructions and they came out beautiful!!!
Just a heads up those were wire cutters between 12:16 and 12:20 you said the right tool that could have been used though a good set of pliers could have been used to turn the eyehooks to tighten the wire just right using the same method
Thank you thank you so much for this video, I just starting to make soap and i can't afford buy a $ 250 cutter ... You're awesome
Great idea, I might have to try it. I think I might try guitar string instead of wire as they won't stretch as much
Yes I thought of that because I play guitar. Let me know how it works. I did change my wires to cheese cutting wire and it works wonderfully, nice and tight.
It may be a good idea to wear safety glasses when using. Like a guitar string the wire can snap and hit you in the face when your looking down while cutting.
That being said. Bravo! Great job! 🌺
You are good and kind teacher thanks so much from Dave in Africa
I haven’t been able to hear the audio cause I’m at work but I am looking forward to doing this. I am a messy cutter and would love to have more precision in cutting the soaps.
I have Buds single wire too. it's awesome. and such a fair price. I give you so much credit for your hard work on your cutter. your so kind to share. love your video's :)))
just an idea for you at your notches cut straight lines about 1/4 inch deep so that the wire is recessed and when you cut it will go trough the soap
you would then need to put the soap on a raised piece of wood or something the same size of soap block
I LOVE the happy birthday jesus soap 😭🙏🙏 You have given me a wonderful idea - thank you so much
You might try hinging the cutter to your bottom board to keep the pressure even, level and straight.
Yes a thought I had as well, maybe next one I make I might hinge it. If you make on and hinge it let me know how it works out. :)
This is a really nice soap cutter though. You did very well. Thanks for this video angel, the soap cutters are very expensive. I need one and when I saw the price $367.00 I was like that's just too much money. Thank you again for this video. Blessings and Light sister☺
I wish I saw this video before I purchased my $200 loaf cutter from Bud.
I saw the prices and instantly said nope i will build my own. all i did was check out the demensions of soap box and designed my own. from that i was able to measure my cutter. $200 is insane.
@@NadaSoaper the shipping for it was what surprised me! I'm only a few hours away from Bud and it's still ridiculous
mis felicitaciones en sus manos se ve que es una mujer muy trabajadora gracias por el tip
Good job, well explained
very detailed work 👍
God bless you
Thank you for watching amd taking time to post. Merrry Christmas 🎄
you are a genius! thank you! i am diy er and have all the supplies somewhere ( that may take a while to look for ) but I love this video thank you so much for sharing, i am gathering supplies to start my soap making journey soon, its a wee bit overwhelming but fun too.( i am in to all organic food you look super healthy and in shape good life style i may hop to your other channel too)
Thank you for watching.
great video, very ingenuitive and you have a great attitude! very inspiring!
hi good night, i love watching your video. I'm Brazilian and I'm a fan of yours, hugs,🥰😘
A piano wire would work great. Those pliers are actually angle cutters
Thank you for the great video, I’m going to make this for my love
I used a old set of Nylon guitar strings I had and they work great. Thank you for the video : )
GREAT IDEA!! Loved the DIY video .... and the boy going across the room in the background at the end LOL
Great video. Love the tips at the end. Good job! 🎉🎉
Thank you for watching ❤️
hey this was such a great video i wanted to know how long were the longest side planks after you cut them?
A very good job. Weldon ma. This is really good ma👍

Thanks for sharing this Jan! I also don't want to spend hundreds of dollars on a soap cutter - especially having to order it from the states - doubles the price! :(
I love the intro, I was a little afraid at first, then the plastic gun came out "and I smoked them" hahaha!
lol. Thanks :)
I'm going to use this idea to make a cutter for my fudge batches!
I just used my cutter again the other day and I"m so glad I have it because cutting my soap is my least favorite thing to do.
Thanks for the video! Have you considered guitar strings?
You can try guitar wire witch is alot stronger wire and sturdy
I can't afford a huge cutter either and I can use a saw and stuff so I am going to try this! Thanks.
really appreciate this video you just saved me a lot of money.
Thanks for watching.
Awesome first time experience. Basic is good. GR8 job, thanks for sharing.
You have a gun and a knife in the first 30 seconds! I’m already liking this video!!😂
Lol!!! Thanks for watching.

You are highly crafted woman...I have one question for you, "Can I use microwave for my soap to cure fast"?
No you cannot so sorry. I understand about wanting your soap sooner. It’s worth the wait. Thanks for watching.
