- Now that NHL 24 is coming to an end, I thought it was a great time to review NHL 24 in depth. This may not be the most positive review, just keep that in mind.

Yeah the interference and stick lift calls is out of this world
Realistically, this is the first time gameplay felt different in like 10 years, of course there's going to be kinks to iron out. EA is lazy and I doubt any major changes come for NHL25, but it was fun to enjoy some different gameplay IMO.
Biggest issue was load times
I hadn’t played an NHL game since late 2000’s. Love NHL ‘04. Got this game free for PS+, absolutely tragedy

The hitting and shooting have always been the same inputs for as long as I can remember. How is this even a thing.

The worst thing about this game was the interference for sure. Get the reverse hit out and switch it back to protect puck. Get rid of the face button michigan. You can do it with radko gudas. Wtf

Let me ask, do you enjoy the interference calls? Do you enjoy the terrible goalies? The awful button mapping? The game has a 1.5/10 it's not good
@@roberthicks2909 i dont mind the interference calls because i dont spam shoot. i dont really play online modes so i dont really give a shit about bad tuners. the button mapping is fine. youre just not used to it yet. the protect puck is so much better mapped the way it is and the only times the reverse hitting has been a problem to me was getting used to it in october. the offline gameplay is the best its been in years.

Also no one is “spam shooting” or whatever. That issue is a symptom of EA never coming up with an actual solution or gameplay mechanic for loose puck battles or board battles. It’s just a random combinations of LS and RS to actually get your player to reach for a puck. And some times that occurs in front of the net

I LOVE hockey, and NHL games ('14 was my favorite) , but I actually had to delete an NHL game off my hard drive for the first time, after a few matches against the A.I. Didn't even play 1 online game, because I absolutely hated the physics.
also power ups kill the market bring back gold collectibles, let us make tradables so the market has more cards. and they need to wipe out untradable packs except for rivals. why would i spend 3000 points on an untradable pack to get a 95 goalie whose a chick.
fix stick lift and also maybe make penalties more common for hitting. game needs more stick checking then hits irl players dont just get blown up like they do in the game, let alone 30 times in one game😂. feels like im playing a cartoon w the animations
This game is garbage, even down to the little things, I genuinely can not stand the new celly animations or even the player marker (which is now a circle) cause it feels way too arcadey yk? Idk me personally I have nothing positive to say about 24. I’m still rippin 23 daily 😂

The glass breaking is stupid, and correct me if I’m wrong the tall glass in the corners isn’t glass it’s lexan lol. The short glass on the length of the ice and by the benches is the only real glass.
They should just highlight boards moving from big hits in the corner, like that time Rempe killed the capitals d man in the playoffs. Boards moved at least a foot or two lol.
The goalies are the biggest issue imo, I have koskonin 96 totw and he’s got a 1.79GAA but I’ll play a guy with a mid team and the ice tilt will allow anything to go in from the slot. I’ll have more shots and shots from the slot on his goalie with a 2.5-3GAA and nothing goes in it’s crazy. Sleeves says it has everything to do with the servers and who you line up playing against and I firmly believe this as there are just some guys I don’t score on. Then I’ll jump into the next game against a guy with a better record and lay a smack down on that guy. None of it makes sense
When EA started focusing almost all of their efforts into the CHEL and UHL game modes, I knew the game was doomed, and that was about a decade ago. Since then, I've watched EA continue to add stuff that looks great, but doesn't really do anything to the core gameplay fundamentals.
I finally stopped purchasing it years ago, but watching videos and seeing some of the exact same terrible goalie animations and the defenders struggling to competently walk the blue line without doing a 180 and taking the puck out of the offensive zone still just made me realize there's probably no chance EA ever does things correctly.
They are too interested in the money making modes and the highlight reel things that make for cool animations. They sacrificed some of the greatest hockey gameplay from years ago and got rid of so many nice features.
I think the game could benefit from using the triggers to set "modes" depending on if you're the puck carrier or the defender (I haven't played in years, so maybe they have done this) where you could do something like hold the trigger to face the puck carrier, and then using your right analog stick you could have analog controls for defending. Say you're holding the left trigger on defense, you'll start skating less quickly, but then you can roll the right analog stick left and right, and your stick will sweep accordingly. This lets you try to block passing lanes or just try to get stick on stick contact to knock the puck loose. Double tapping town could let you forcefully jab at the puck, which would run the higher risk of missing and hitting the player's skaters, or just overextending your reach and getting deked. Similarly, you could double tap it up and try to stick lift, with the speed you do it increasing the strength for stronger stick handling players, or players who are defending the puck, but you'll have a greater chance of missing and getting a slash or high sticking call.
You could do the same thing on offense. The left trigger could put you in "puck protect" mode, where your skater doesn't take the same big strides, but you're able to hold the left trigger and stop and cut more quickly along the boards, while using the right analog stick to move the puck around your body to put it into a better shooting position. This would let you skate through the neutral zone and then as you approach the defender, you hold the left trigger and, say you're trying to go around the left side of the defender between them and the boards, you'll start shuffling with your stride instead of doing the full crossovers, but you'll also turn your shoulders and back to the defender, and by pulling the analog stick to the left, you can hold that puck off of your body and away from the defender.
I want to say EA has to do something, but I guess realistically, they don't. They've got the HUT market that's likely replaced the money people like me spent on the game by a significant factor. It would still be really nice to see EA work towards making a game that can be played as a more sim-type hockey game or an arcade game, depending on what people want.
I give it a 3/10 .. its fun for a bit but once you realise how heavily animation based it is, its not fun. Backhand blue liners for tip in goals, goalies cant stop backhanders for their life, high slot far side wrsiters, sticks breaking almost every time you take a slapper or one timer at the end of the period, reverse hitting someone whos not even trying to hit you... Theres way too many problems with this game to even mention in a comment. EVERY goal in this game is cheese. Game is trash

But you hit a lot of good points. The control scheme sucks now but it wasn’t perfect before because of the clashing between buttons/stick usage between with/without the puck.
And very sad that board and puck battles haven’t had a revamp in like 15 years. Huge parts of hockey that go unloved in this game.
HUT sucks. They need to expand the player pool as you said. FIFA/FC does a great job of this. NHL team - as usual - needs to take some cues from their futbol counterparts.
If only some clever fellas could give NHL 14 the College Football Revamped treatment so we could just walk away from the current series until (or if ever) EA gets its act together.
If u want a realistic video game get used to goalies letting in one or two softies a game
Worst NHL game ever is such a stretch. In terms of EA, NHL 15 next gen was worse. And I'd also say NHL 2005 was worse too.
And in terms of NHL hockey games in general, Sony's old NHL games were absolute dogwater
Horrible game. Hasn't been good since 15. Remove all x factors and bring skill back. 90% of players now would rage quit from lack of skill without xfactor. Hut has too many player assists. No skill what so ever.

Holy overreaction! In regards to gameplay it was nowhere near the worst game IMO. Not even close, 2022 was god awful. Goalies, yeah agreed and that's been a problem for years now! Offsides, nope that's fine. Reverse hitting is an art bro it doesn't always work. The glass breaking LOL? Not even worth mentioning it's just part of the presentation. Agreed on content, TBs were decent, MSPs rinse and repeat (Leetch OMG!!!), some cool new ideas (Base Icons) but overall the same thing: Rivals, Champs, Packs, Repeat! We need some major changes in HUT for 2025!

This was the first year I played HUT, so I don't have a frame of reference, but man, this game was really rough to play. I played mostly WoC for the last decade. I feel like I am fighting the AI/DDA/scripting more than than the opponent's skill. From your own teammates constantly getting in your way, to them slowing down and/or going to weird places on 2v1s, to them going for changes when a loose puck is right in front of them, this game is tough to fight through mentally. I won't be returning for HUT 25. If WoC is still busted with insane menu load times and super long matchmaking+game times, I won't be bothering to buy the game at all.
Still no PC version, 0/10

They make the goalies turn into absolute clowns, fumbling everything, can't pass, when the puck is anywhere near them, they need to fix that. They also need to lighten up on the goalie interference, so many disallowed goals even if you look at the goalie wrong. I also agree that the change they made this year that when you are trying to shoot near the goalie, and you get interference because the goalie has the puck just after you are jamming the shoot button is hooooorible and needs to be reversed. AI issues, offensive players going way offisides for no reason whatsoever, teammates on breakaways going to the net then suddenly veering away for no reason. I agree with the player bias the devs show, they have countless players to use yet they have 50 cards for the same player, and they make some cards really great, but others they routinely make shit, like Tkachuck cars having low 90s speed at 98ovr. And I agree that the rewards in this game are absolute shit, probably because they want you to buy them.
Nhl2k8 you can litteraly tape your stick how ever you want and choose whatever color you want the fact that you cant do that on any hockey game ever made after that is ridiculous 👍💯
