  • Muhammad Ali comments on the ups and downs of his boxing career, race relations and his religious beliefs.
CUNY TV is proud to re-broadcast newly digitized episodes of DAY AT NIGHT, the popular public television series hosted by the late James Day. Day was a true pioneer of public television: co-founder of KQED in San Francisco, president of WNET upon the merger of National Educational Television (NET) and television station WNDT/Channel 13, and most recently, Chairman of the CUNY TV Advisory Board. The series features fascinating interviews with notable cultural and political figures conducted in the mid 1970's.
James Day died on April 24, 2008, at age 89. After hosting DAY AT NIGHT, he was appointed Professor of Radio and Television at CUNY's Brooklyn College in 1976, and was named Professor Emeritus upon his retirement in 1988. In 2000, CUNY TV named him Chairman of its Advisory Board. Day - a founder of INPUT, an international conference of public television broadcasters - also was host of "The Global Tube," a multi-year series on CUNY TV that presented notable television films from around the world.
This edition was taped February 19, 1974.

Ali won the gold medal in the 1960 Olympics a few years before I was born . By the time I got old enough to be aware he was word champ and then they took it away from him because he wouldnt go to Nam . I remember some of those days but our family loved the champ ..my mom and dad loved him because he was standing up for the kids sent to Nam as my uncle was killed there at age 23 with a pregnant wife at home and we all felt that war was wrong like Ali ...He was the champion of my life because he always did the right thing and loved all people ..My God he was an amazing man ..God Bless and Rahmat Allah wa Barakaatuh.

Amazing and inspiring thoughts of Mr. Mohammad Ali.(RIP. )
Indeed he was the greatest man of his times..He was the crownless King of the people. Always thinking of how to help people. Not just the oppressed 40 million black Afro Americans ,but any body who was in need of help he helped. Best example was that quoted by his financial advisor, Once Mohammad Ali was in his room watching T.V. he saw a Jewish senior citizens home at the verge of closing ,so immediately he ordered his financial manager/adviser , who was sitting next to him, to send 500,000 dollars to the management of a Jewish nursing home., to prevent it from closing This was the humanity in him, at its best. We all black, whites, browns, yellows and red can learn from the Great Boxer and more importantly a great human being. HE read the Quranic. My prayer, my sacrifice ,my life ,and my death are all for God and indeed he lived and died that way. No greater success than that can be achieved in life. I would just editorialize one thing here. I.e. love God and Love people for the love of God. You will never go wrong. The world will be at your feet . You shall stand tall..

I remember all the hostages he got released from the mid east, I can't remember exactly where because Ali wanted to keep it low key, that way he could get the needed rests of hostages being released, after their release Ali was still low key and humble not wanting to gloat in accolades and criticize American pick, he said he was not a politician and would let the politicians do their job because the people elected them. What a guy, there's so many legendary tales of Ali outside of boxing, such a humanitarian.

People talk about his physical skills but I think he is the smartest fighter ever. Could adapt to any situation like the 3 fraizer fights. Every time fraizer would gain an advantage ali would turn things around. And that was no easy thing as fraizer was a tank aswell as having highly underrated defense and fight IQ. He truly was the greatest in the ring and out. A fighter could have 100 fights and be undefeated but ali will always be the goat. His accomplishments outside the ring add to the mystique. A man of peace and love to everyone. More humble than people ever gave him credit for. RIP the greatest.

Ali was a great guy. He had it all. Too bad he wasn’t influenced by Larry Elder. Even so he makes good arguments for his position. He was a product of his time. God bless him.

I know it was recorded pre-social distancing but it was funny how close they are sitting to each other!
Joking aside, what a man! An original character with an internal sense of justice and the will to see it through.

Love this...you know when Ali's voice softened as he became older... He still had pearls of wisdom... And we could not hear him... I don't know why they did not place the mike closer to his mouth... Or give him a hand held one...
In this interview Ali appears stressed...and the interviewer, as though perhaps last minute time was short...and hence interview rushed...

David duFresne ...yes... True... Was generally reflective n soft spoken... When he was dx with Parkinson's.. n voice barely a whisper...shame mic was not placed closer to him..

Right, poor technical production back then. When Ali turns his head either way you lose more audio because of the mic location.

Everything I see Muhammad Ali I want cry because I Love this man so much not only his boxing ability but he stood strong on his beliefs no matter what they took him he remained strong. I never felt Love for nobody in this world but Muhammad Ali...I'm a black and I don't see most people standing strong because they're afraid of losing Fame and money It's so sad we are a falling race of people and we don't even realize who we are... We are GOD chosen people

Bob Marley was also like Ali in terms of standing for his religious convictions and beliefs. He refused a treatment for his cancer that included amputation of any part of his body as he believed a body is a temple of soul and spirit and one should not willingly remove any part ...that reminded me of Ali who stood for his beliefs. Africans are not known to have any stand or convictions in the face of adversity
