This is master class in story telling. The choir nailed the slow version of the song - it showed that they were still very talented and dedicated, and still very comfortable in the "old ways" of the world. However, things get much more complex with the fast-paced part (an analogy for the convents' need to change with the times in order to save not only their congregation but also the downtrodden city around them). You can see that older nuns are somewhere between unsure and anxious when the fast part begins, and by the end they have gained confidence, even if some of them couldn't quite get the beat down with their clapping (some even have looks of disbelief by the end - perhaps an allegory of faith vs doubt?). It was charming and also realistic, as they were not quite yet all together. Mary Clarence gives a motherly wink of assurance at 1:17 as to say "yall got this!" The nod of approval from Mary Lazarus to Mary Clarence at 2:01 lets us know that she is fully behind her new choir leader now, and that any resentment between the two has been settled; and by 2:33 Mary Lazarus is excited for her second solo, perhaps re-energizing her lost passion for music. At 2:10, we see a very nervous Mary Roberts begin to show off her talent, as the other choir members look on in genuine shock that she's got that voice. This confidence will grow throughout the movie. And we see Mary Patrick in her own world just belting out the big notes, never showing any shyness at all! Then we see some very rough characters outside who certainly had never been inside the church slowly get drawn in, with the Monsignor encouraging them to stay despite their rough looks. And by the end of the song even the once-bored altar servers - only there probably because their parents made them - were engaged and smiling. As applause erupts, we are ready for the second half of the movie, as the story will shift away from a basic witness protection comedy into a much deeper story of life and second chances. Without this scene, the sisters do not become renewed and re-establish their mission of serving an impoverished and forgotten neighborhood. Without this scene, Mother Superior has no protagonist in Mary Clarence to help her get out of her staid ways of thinking. And without this scene, we cannot see a changing of heart and ultimately a renewed sense of purpose in Dolores' life. PS - Maggie Smith is a legend. She conveys sooo much in this scene without ever opening her mouth.
Jesus man, this movie reminds me of my childhood, I know the songs from memory, but your comment made me appreciate the scene -and the movie as a whole- in a different way, what with me being an adult now and knowing more about things.
And yet, it is an undeniable fact that trying ‘to be hip/trendy,’ and ‘get with the times’ has resulted in the decimation of women’s vocations. The nuns’ religious orders dropped like a stone as a result of adopting this attitude. It doesn’t attract young people as the movie would have one believe. It’s a complete con job. The religious orders of nuns that are flourishing are those that would never sing the worldly irreverent segment of the hymn. It’s really ‘hymnicide.’ It’s not about “honoring” the Blessed Mother, It’s about self-indulgence …. feeeeeeling good.” Mass attendance in Catholic churches that embraced this self-indulgent ‘worship’ has declined greatly. The traditional Catholic societies are growing with great rapidity. They are the ones attracting young families. Sadly Sister Act was a joke perpetrated on millions of unsuspecting people who know little to nothing of the richness of the contemplative life.
Of note, the portrayal of Sister Mary Roberts gaining more confidence in this piece is incredibly spot on. After her first solo (when she lights up), her body language is still very rigid compared to the other nuns, who are more relaxed and grooving along (sister Mary Patrick especially). She knows she can sing, but she still has to learn how to relax and enjoy herself and that's something which takes time. Full credit to the actress here for pulling this off so well.

For anyone wondering, the Latin lines in the upbeat version are from the hymn, "O Sanctissima" and the "Sanctus". The real tune of the first is "Sicilian Mariners' Hymn", and is played at Christmas as "O du fröliche". The second one is sung at every Mass, in Latin or the vernacular, before the Consecration. "Virgo, respice; Mater, aspice" ("Virgin, consider us; Mother, look at us")

This movie nails it.

I saw this on VHS as a kid, and this song remains one of my favourites. Part of what made it so memorable is the sort-of "underdog" storyline, where a struggling parish in the inner-city just needs to find the right people to bring itself back on-track, even to the point where the Pope visits for Sunday worship.
It reminds me of the parable of The King's Feast...the king had a great feast prepared for all his rich, noble friends...a huge spread was laid out for them, lots of delicious, succulent foods, and the best wines. Nobody showed up. So he told his servants to go out into the allies and by roads to invite the poor, the deaf, sck, blind, and mute, and soon his halls were filled with the grateful.

Sister Mary Robert(the nun with red hair) played by Wendy Makkena whenever her character sings her part it's so moving it gives me that feeling in her chest you get when you can feel what someone is singing. 30 years later and this still kills. My favorite part is when the two nuns side-eye each other after realizing -- this is actually good! I also appreciate it isn't overproduced like a movie today might do. It has a simplicity to it that makes Sister Act such a timeless film.

Mary Clarence gives a motherly wink of assurance at 1:17 as to say "yall got this!"
The nod of approval from Mary Lazarus to Mary Clarence at 2:01 lets us know that she is fully behind her new choir leader now, and that any resentment between the two has been settled; and by 2:33 Mary Lazarus is excited for her second solo, perhaps re-energizing her lost passion for music.
@@chisenefregaormai8665lol
@@chisenefregaormai8665stop whining the song has done more for the church, than you praying for your entire life babbling nonsense will ever do.

This is what they mean:
"Mater amata, intermerata" ("Mother beloved, undefiled")
"Sanctus, Sanctus Dominus!" ("Holy, Holy Lord!")
"Virgo, respice; Mater, aspice" ("Virgin, consider us; Mother, look at us")

It’s not her singing but her lip syncing is amazing. No matter how many times I watch and focus on her she just doesn’t miss a beat or expression or anything.
@@cili7 You are correct Chris and she has sang in Disney animation like The Little Mermaid (Ariel).
It’s movies like this that made my childhood so special. Thanks to my parents for buying this vhs, this movie and part 2 will always have special place in my heart.
音楽の科目取ると必ずと言っていいほど、鑑賞する素晴らしい作品
個人的に神作品だと思ってる
Reverend Mother’s facial expressions were classic. I don’t think she could’ve done better has she tried. The shocked “what’d you just say”...to pure delight...to “I can’t wait to verbally whip your butt.”
Absolutely love Sister Act, it never fails to cheer me up.
My family knows as I’ve been telling them for a decade now, I want a black choir to sing at my funeral. I just think it will bring such joy to everyone!
本当大好き
どのシーンも好きだけど
男の子2人がリズム取りながら顔見合わせるところ可愛くて好き

My favorite movie ever. And I still laugh and laugh and laugh every time. Love Whoopie.❤
If your soul doesn’t get lifted when listening to this song.....you’re cold.
This song never gets old. And church would not suck so much if they had music like this!
I can't believe they let choirs sing Hallelujah by Cohen (a song I deeply dislike) and not rearranged classical Christian hymns. But knowing the men wrapped in certain clergy clothes, that doesn't surprise me at all.
This was my earliest exposure to worship music, and what an early introduction. Worshiping the lord should always be fun. It definitely brings me closer to him.

Mmm
I wish they'd bring music like this back!!! Forget that it's Gospel music, although I certainly appreciate that too; this is EXCELLENT
One of my childhood movies. Because of this movie and Whoopi, I joined my schools choir from 7th grade until my senior year of high school.
I'm 34 years old, and I'll still watch this movie when I get a chance.
A timeless classic.

This song never fails to put me in a good mood
Agreed and since I am Catholic I find it beautiful and very spiritual just like these movies
I remember when this movie came out WAYYY back in the day, I was about 11 years old. I still remember people raving about the nuns singing and all, and the word of mouth that spread. It was a fun time to remember.
Hands down my favorite song in the whole movie. The exuberance brings tears of joy to my eyes every time and I'm not even Catholic!
I invite you to become catholic
This takes me right back to my childhood. Every. Single. TIME.
