- Hi everyone,
Welcome back to a new Timelapse video.
This is a short video of the growth evolution of my 'Washingtonia robusta' in 11 years here in Belgium.
Also known as 'Mexican fan palm'.
Planted out at the beginning of 2010, so now (2021) already 11 years in open ground @ Belgium. (Zone 8b)
Enjoy the video and the enormous growth of this beautiful Palm.
Dutch, German, French, Spanish, Italian and Polish subtitles are now also available for this video !😉👍

These grow all over in Northern CA, I'm so impressed how tolerant they are of any soil and cold.
Thanks for your comment.
Yes, they grow well here too. But we have to protect & warm them well here during the winters. Unfortunately, this specimen from the video is currently on the verge of death. During the winter 2022 - 2023 it suffered heavy damage, from which it was very difficult to recover last year. It suffered spear rot again last winter, so I'm afraid it won't recover now. In any case, it is very weak now. Fingers crossed🤞
Sheesh, sorry to hear that. It's always tough to lose such an old plant. I had a echeveria for probably 20 years that I got since childhood, and in a matter of a year some type of white fungus took it out along with all of her pups; the leaves would shatter when touched. Leaf cuttings, new soil, repotting or nothing could help them. @@Dimi.Exotic.Garden
@carpy1252 Yes, it is very unfortunate indeed. I hope it survives because there is still some green on it...🤞
Also very sorry about your story, such things are always painful. 🫤🤷♂️
Wow, your garden looks great, not just the robusta.
Thanks Stanley 👍
great video so good to see your films of your plants and how big they get over th years great encouragement
Thank you so much John.😊
I do my best to get these palms, which are very unique in our country, as large as possible here in our cold climate.
Much more fun to grow them from small to large instead of buying & planting a big tree right away...
I am finishing a next video that will be online soon, the growth evolution of my Butyagrus which was already very spectacular... 👍
OH MY what a Vid watching that Robusta growing over the years, ...you have givin me ideas of how to lay out my garden very similar to the way you have done it!, ......well done for the Vid 10/10 ........like the backing music to!.....keep the vids up regards Dave Mac ,North London, UK...were the weather seems to be getting hotter each summer and much Milder winters,
Hi Dave, Great to hear that I inspire you and that you like my videos. I also really appreciate the comment about the choice of music.👍
I will definitely keep making updates & videos. Thank you for the kind words.
Many greetings from Belgium...where the weather seems to be similar to the weather in North London 😉
Here in Los Angeles the one I have has grown from a seed in the garden and in one year it's already three feet tall. The climate is everything for this tree.
Indeed. Wow that's great 👏👍😊
Merci 😊👍
Amazing growth!
Thanks 🙏😊
this is amazing. i just planted 11 of these a month ago. 6 were 2 months old and the other 5 were 6 months old. i cant wait for 'em to grow
Thank you. 😊
Wow, that's a lot of Washingtonias. They grow very fast, it is faster than you think. It only takes a while in the first years because they first make roots in the ground. Once settled, it suddenly goes very quickly. Good luck.👍
Super video Pozdrawiam gorąco❤🌴💪

Mooi man! 😉
Bedankt Niek 😊
Goed gedaan Dimi.
Bedankt Eddy. Staat gewoon in volle grond hoor.
i love your palms i have watched your canary about a year ago here on yt also june 6'th 2014 was the day my little sister was born

Wow , big palm

Fabulous garden Dimi, what is the lowest temperatures you normally get in winter?
In normal winter here -8°C as lowest, but colder happens to. Coldest ever here was -18°C about 10 years ago...🥶
Thanks Dimi, about the same here in the U.K., but it’s been mild so far without any severe frosts.
@@bloggalot4718 Yes, it is indeed very mild again this winter. Here we only had 1 night of frost this winter, then it was -4°C at the coldest moment in the morning...
So definitely no complaining 😇
Still anxiously waiting for February but the first predictions look very good
In the middle of March I will remove all protections.
Our forecast is frost free for the next seven to ten days, looking promising. Wishing you well for this season, stay safe.
@@Dimi.Exotic.Garden Do you have any protection when its about a few degree minus for 1-2 days?
Crazy how they die off then spring back to life...I have 5 growing from seed(approx 15 inches high) and 3 others approx 800mm high with thick strong trunk...I also have 5 trachycharpus at over 5 foot high....love my palms... UK 😁
Yeah, they are crazy palms indeed. Fast growers also...😊
Nice collection Billy 👍
On February 23, 2021, you pruned almost all the fronds but on July 25, 2021, a period of five months, there were seven or eight fronds. That was very fast growth.
Thank you. You saw that very well. 👌
Fast growth indeed. That's why it wasn't so bad to prune so that I could protect better / easier.
0:53 was that shelter to protect it from leaf burn in direct sunlight? I am having a very tough time with that happening to every palm I grow in MA. You put one out for day in direct sunlight, boom, every leaf instantly goes brown and dies when they may take months to grow fronds. when it's even growing
I bought several seedlings of this species on ebay last year and they all died of leaf burn but I'm growing a bunch from seed now and they're doing well enough.
No William, that's not sun protection. What you see is the winter protection, eventually it will be closed when it gets really cold.
Sunburning of the leaves only occurs if the plant has not been exposed to UV light for a very long time (weeks/months). So, for example, if you overwinter them indoors, or if the plants have grown up in a greenhouse and then have to go outside in the sun, or sometimes those from the store too...
Then you always have to let the plants get used to U.V., so to the sun. You do this by first placing them in full shade, and then slowly building up sunlight... This process takes several days/weeks. If you don't do that and immediately put it in full sun, the leaves will indeed burn immediately.
It's like with ourselves, after the winter when it's warm and sunny again in the spring, we shouldn't go naked because then our skin burns too...
If the plants are constantly left outside and always gets sun/U.V., then they will not burn. My winter protection is always open, I only close it at times when it really freezes. Then open again on frost-free days.
Just been watching the pheonix caneriensis video any more updates on that one?
That video ends in 2020, a sequel will certainly follow. The plan is to take at least 5 years as a follow-up. So it's still a bit too early, we're only 3 years further now... I can say that the Phoenix has grown quite a bit in the meantime and is still doing very well. It came through the winter well again without damage. On my Facebook you will find recent photos, otherwise you should already have a look there. It is visible to everyone.
facebook.com/Exotic.Hofke.Dimi
Nice!! Did you cut the fronds off each year or did they die? And did you protect this palm in the early years?
Thanks. Every year this Washingtonia gets a box around it as winter protection.
But last year in the winter (2020 -> 2021)
I could not have built this box around it because I was rehabilitating from an accident on my wrist/hand.
So the palm was not protected and suddenly in February (2021) came an ice week with severe frost. (You can see that in my other video 'winter protection' -> ruclips.net/video/jh7Xwm9frDIh/видео.htmlttps://ruclips.net/video/jh7Xwm9frDI/видео.html )
Then I pruned all the leaves because I was sure that the leaves would freeze to death. So without leaves I was able to pack the palm quite easily and quickly with cloths and heat cable as a quick emergency solution. That was just doable then with my hand and help from my brother...
Otherwise I never prune leaves, only if the leaves are brown/dead.
Yes, I have protected this Washingtonia every winter from the beginning with a box around it and with heating if necessary.
@@Dimi.Exotic.Garden Wow fair play its come a long way! What is the minimum temperature you get there?
@@swarvalous Every winter -5°C happens, -8°C happens occasionally and -10° to -15°C happens rarely but certainly also...
In my 15 years with exotics, the coldest temperature here in my garden has been -16°C. 🥶

@@Dimi.Exotic.
Also kühl und frostfrei überwintern.
May I ask:
What's the coldest it got where you live
What's the most protection this needs
Is it worth it?
Hi,
The coldest I've experienced here is -18,5°C. This Washingtonia also survived that with the necessary protection. The Washingtonia itself has never seen colder temperatures than -5°C of course.
Further inland in our small country, the temperature had gone down to -22°C. That was extreme at the time, but -10°C to -15°C also happens here occasionally. Although that is also more of an exception than a fact...
Temperatures of -5°C often happen here, down to -10°C also reasonable, but certainly not every year. The winters are always very wet here, which is the biggest problem in combination with the cold.
The best protection for this Washintonia is to build a box around it, consisting of well-insulating polycarbonate plates. In case of severe frost, you then have to close the box and heat it inside so that the temperature inside remains just above freezing.
Is that worth it? I think so of course, but that's everyone's own choice. That way the palm certainly remains beautiful and survives every winter here as you can see in the video. Be sure to watch my other video about my winter protection for more info... -> ruclips.net/video/jh7Xwm9frDI/видео.html

I'm also from Belgium. I just bougt my first 2 WASHINGTONIA FILIFERA plants. My plan was to put them in a pot for 1 year and maybe in the ground next year. Iff i fill the scale under the pot with water, can i give it to much water? Thx already for info. And good luck with your plants.
Hi Bram, no that's just perfect, they love much water so 👍👌
If you plant it out next year, full sun, they love heat and a lot of water.
@@Dimi.Exotic.Garden Thx a lot.
A que profundidad pusiste esa palmerita disculpa
Bonjour,
I put my seeds into water and they floated to the bottom. How long do I keep them in water? Do I wait until I see a root?
It's good if the seeds sink to the bottom. Leave in the water for a few days, changing the water every day. Then simply sow in an airy substrate. And then keep slightly moist and around 30°C.
@@Dimi.Exotic.Garden what kind of airy substrate do you mean? Can I use a wet paper towel and put the seed inside of it and close it and wait until it sprouts?
Doesn't matter, as long as it's airy. You can even buy special seed potting soil. That wet paper towel can also idd 👍
what hardiness zone are you in? how cold does it get?
Zone 8b...
Most often average -5°C a -6°C
Occasionally -10°C
Rarely but it does happen once -15°C
@@Dimi.Exotic.Garden impressive. do you protect the palm when there is frost? i am in zone 8a and in doubt if my washingtonia will survive outside

What state do you live in??
Country: Belgium (Europe)
Province: East Flanders
City: Sint-Niklaas

I feel sorry for these poor palm trees, having to go through European winters...but we all want to have things that are sometimes impossible to have.
Yes, I understand your reaction @hebneh. It is indeed a sin for the palms that they cannot grow up in ideal conditions. But because it is just as unique here, they luckily get a lot of extra love and care here, as you can see on my videos, so that they usually live in top condition. Sometimes better & more than in some (sub)tropical places...
And with the exception of the winters, the conditions here are still very good for most species. But I understand your point...👍
@@cosmo_mosy First, plants are NOT "inanimate objects". They are alive; that's how they grow. And they eventually die as well, just like animals. Second, while you can claim European winters are "not that harsh", the video shows that this palm has gone through three winters in which it was cold enough to have killed most of the fronds. For this palm, yes, that is harsh.
@@cosmo_mosy Plants may not have feelings like animals do, but they certainly aren't "inanimate".
