For as long as the book is, there is very little filler. Everything is important and if you re-read the book, you get a clearer view why certain things are mentioned in certain chapters .

@@DarkcIoud1111 there is sooo much filler. Most of Italy and Paris is just filler. Italy was very fun and exciting and I really loved it but Paris drags on WAY TOO LONG.

I think this was the best century for literature. You've got Joesph Conrad, Emily Bronte, Alexandre Dumas, Jane Austen, Fyodor Dostoyevsky, Leo Tolstoy, Oscar Wilde... the list really does just go on and on. It was a true renaissance era for books. I think the enlightenment era gave artists a whole new wealth of concepts to draw from and they took advantage of that in the best of ways.

1300 pages in one of the most ruthless tirades of the book:
"Crois-tu que j’aime être le Comte de Monte Cristo ? C’est un homme terrible, impitoyable et froid. Mais ce n’est pas moi qui ai voulu devenir cet homme-là. Moi, il me suffisait d’être Edmond Dantès, je n’attendais rien d’autre de la vie, mais ils m’en ont empêché. Eh bien, tant pis pour eux."

"The count of monte-cristo" shows us that our schools have consequences, Villefort, Danglars and Mondego have nothing to complain about what happened to them and their families, even if they do not had not yet planned as a result of their decisions. You cannot escape the consequences by avoiding them.
By choosing something and therefore affirming its value, we communicate simultaneously to everyone. Danglars, Mondego and Villefort explained to Dantes that it was lawful to use lies, fraud and all the tricks in their choices after all they used with him.
Edmond Dantes only applied their logic to them in his revenge.
The book leaves a warning that your choices have consequences and that by changing the standards of values, they can be used against you.
It is not to summarize the book in the villains being punished and the good are rewarded, but that our actions have consequences. The Count in his revenge had to deal with unexpected consequences in his revenge as the death of Edoard. A warning that our choices can have unexpected effects and even if we do not plan, we are responsible.

Edward was on his way to being another Benedetto. De Villefort could have prevented every bit of those poisonings and Dantes took too much responsibility for the poisoning that was going to happen anyway. Dantes didn’t talk her into poisoning. He only provided more education.

      .
I love edmond and haydee together, the two are similar and want revenge. Edmond was not the same person, he became spiteful, different from the person whom Mercedes loved. Hyadeee is more akin to Edmond, can better understand him and love him as he is by sharing a similar fate.

I have been reading the book myself and I am trying to absorb as much content as I can since the book is very impressive and contains sentences that I would like to be able to use myself. This being said, I believe that reading 100 pages a day it would just be too much and you wont be able to understand the book and you will just be reading it for the plot. In my humble opinion, the beauty of this book lies more in the details, which means that a fast read would mean overlooking the essentials.

Hi, I don’t read much and don’t know much about picking out a book and when I google “The Count of Monte Cristo” I see that there are different editions of it and I have no idea what they mean... Like whats the difference between the original and classic edition vs. the abridged edition?
Which one is the best for me to buy?

Also is there pictures in this book?
    Thank you.

I’m not sure about all editions but abridged means that parts of the book have been removed to make it shorter. I generally prefer the original editions. I listened on audiobook the original and just picked one I liked the narrator for.

Does the plot in the book differ to the movie ???

    • @johanneshaufniensis6002
      @johanneshaufniensis6002 3 года назад

      Which movie?
There are many films, I love the Soviet version
If it is the 2002 film, it is.
The story of the book could be defined as follows:
"God and the devil are fighting there and the battlefield is the heart of man.” - Fyodor Dostoevsky, The Brothers Karamazov.
Edmond after years in prison, he returned as an extremely dark and cruel man, he is a man who delights in the suffering of his enemies and even hurts innocents for that.
But still, he still has a little bit of goodness inside the heart of the count.
Let's not forget that the count has a beautiful bride from the east with whom he falls in love.
There is part of the Western audience that was disgusted by the end of the book.
I'm going to copy a part of their criticism from the end.
"I first read the book about 9 years ago, and I really enjoyed it and was perfectly happy with the ending. A few years ago, I saw the movie version of The Count of Monte Cristo (2002) with Jim Caviezel, and I thought it was pretty decent. A lot of things had to be condensed for the movie, with some characters left out or combined. But the most interesting thing about it is that Dantes ends up with Mercedes in the end. Haydee is left out entirely and Albert turns out to be the son of Dantes, conceived before he was imprisoned. And I kind of liked that ending.
So that is where I was at, and I just reread the book a couple months ago, and I think the movie has changed how I feel about the ending. Reading the book again, I couldn't help but feel sorry for Mercedes, as she was not at fault for anything. I even started rooting for her, when she is trying to drop hints to the Count, and the Count realizes she only ever loved him. And it is evident that there is still love between them (consider when she melts Dantes' heart enough to force him not to kill Albert). And at the end, it just felt even more wrong that Mercedes ends up broken, weeping, and completely alone. I realize that the book ending is the only true absolute revenge. And that the movie ending makes the story more about the happy ending for hopeless romantics, and a little less about revenge.
So my main question is: which ending would you prefer? One where Mercedes is left broken, weeping, and alone and Dantes is off romping around the world with a princess half his age? Or where Haydee is freed and grows up on her own, and Dantes spends happily ever after with Mercedes?
Additionally: Did anyone else have a change of heart similar to mine after watching the movie?
TL;DR In the movie ending, Mercedes and Dantes end up together, and now I think I prefer that ending, which makes the book ending really sad :"
      www.reddit.com/r/books/comments/1r95ix/a_question_about_the_ending_of_the_count_of_monte/
Alexandre Dumas is not a disney or hollywood writer to give a cute ending.
In the Soviet version, the director divorces his wife to marry the actress who played Haydee, the new love of the count who was younger than him and left together. Life imitating art and complaining about a fiction book, happened in real life.
The book is not a disney story

Can a 13 year old read and understand this book?

    • @elenareadsbooks88
      @elenareadsbooks88  5 лет назад +1

I would say that there is no reason you shouldn’t try it and see. It really does depend on the individual for example I don’t think I would have been able to understand all the elements at 13 but would still have enjoyed the surface level story. Why don’t you borrow it from the library and give it a go and if it becomes a struggle maybe leave a few years 😊

I think an important part of understanding the book is that Dantés does go to far in the end and becomes a villain worse in magnitude than any of the people he was trying to get revenge on
