With the words of a man well educated in nature: That situation was "Not worth the calories" for the Rex.
Both that and also not worth losing it's one good eye. The scene implied that Rex decided to fight one of those before and lost it's eye. This scene also reminds me of how early humans dominated much larger animals by using spears, having a ranged weapon is the only way to fight something so large that you have no way of defeating it otherwise. T.Rex could obviously fold it like paper with it's sheer strength but it would have to get close to it in order to do that, which was it's main problem.
This was the original scene, but they cut due to threats from crazy T-rex fans.
