I liked Sailor Moon as a kid, but YYH was the first anime I really got into! Kurama was my first exposure to a femme male character who was not just some kind of homophobic joke (or villain... I'm looking at you, Disney). He was taken seriously, he was powerful, he was smart, and he definitely owned his femininity / androgeny. I remember being so blown away by that at the time. It might have been the first time I realized that men could casually, comfortably, securely express themselves that way.
Japan definitely borrowed a lot of elements of greaser fashion, and most especially the hair and jackets- you can see a _lot_ of that kind of stuff in 80s/90s anime with various "delinquent" characters, where it is pretty heavily coded as a signal of being in a gang of some sort, although of course in the context of anime protagonists they usually have a heart of gold. A lot of the borrowing comes out of the influence the US had over Japan through the 50's with the post-war occupation by large numbers of GIs, although it went a lot further than that; it's a very interesting subject (and one that ties directly into the birth of anime, as it happens) if you are curious to look into it more. YYH and HxH definitely feel like they epitomize the "shounen battle anime tournament arc" formula very well; Yoshiro Togashi I think understood the pacing and structure of that concept better than perhaps anyone, as both of those series are essentially nothing _but_ a series of long tournament arcs. But beyond that, he also had a talent for crafting an interesting cast of characters and antagonists, which is something that I think a lot of shounen series tend to struggle with. (Although, that said, he wasn't exactly great at writing women and it shows pretty clearly.) I'm not surprised at all that Kurama was your fave from the show- that definitely would've been my guess for you, because I think you share a lot of the "classy and reserved" vibe that he gives off (both in dress and in attitude.) I was definitely a Hiei fanboy myself, because I am a huge dork and the "angsty powerful dark antihero" absolutely hit home for me at the time. (You may be shocked to find out that I also liked Ryouga over Ranma in that series.) You really hit the nail on the head with all of the style picks for this one, especially for Hiei and Botan, and I think the AI stuff worked pretty well here because it was just the clothes. I really enjoyed the format overall, and I can't wait to see what you're working on next.
I'm so glad that you brought up the post-war piece! That was such a key piece of context - and it honestly opened up my eyes to the american influence on japanese style more broadly. I'm curious what other foundational facts I'll uncover in ongoing research. Thanks for the ongoing support - you're one of those folks who just gets it. Much appreciated.
Yesss love YYH style. I personally think that Kuwabara would expire on the spot if you handed him a Prada jacket and told him to wear it, but like, that doesn't mean you're wrong. One thing I would have liked to hear you talk about in regard to Hiei is that he's not human. He doesn't know how the human world works. He seems to prefer to wear his "demon" clothes, notably his iconic black cape, to more typical "human" clothes. Tbh I'd bet money Kurama picks out most of his street clothes, this little gremlin would wear a burlap sack if he thought it made him better at fighting. He for sure has a personal style tho. He'd deny it but Hiei lives for the drama. loving the videos!
I've been waiting for this one forever and you definitely delivered! I think the AI goes so much better when you provide the images of just the clothes rather than having the AI draw the characters as well. It's much less jarring. Awesome as always!
Wow another great fashion anime review X! I really loved it. Yu Yu Hakusho has to be one of my favourite anime/manga series and i always loved to see new outfits appear. I also love how you could do some "cosplay" of these and just have an everyday fit which true fans would maybe still recognize. I hope we can some time in the future see one of these analyses videos about Dragon Ball. It may seem that there is not much but over the long running of the anime and manga there are a lot of cool outfits to find, especially in Bulma's wardrobe. Also the editing becomes better in better in these videos and i liked the AI assistance, that was totally ok :)
Thanks a lot for the thoughtful comment - lol, and yeah, I think I'll kinda always be a lowkey closet cosplayer at heart 🤭 Bulma is definitely a character I want to cover, and with some other characters in the dragon ball series serving some looks - maybe there's a story angle that can compose itself.
One thing I keep meaning to suggest, marvel comics did this thing called the hellfire gala It was basically a big fancy party hosted by the X men, and all the characters attending it got their own red carpet type outfits, some of them even incorporating their powers I think they did two, and some of the characters that didn’t appear in the main story got variant covers showing what they’re looks would be
Ahhh, finally home from work and- nice. Just the way to start my weekend. Quality as always, the gang had some great outfits beyond their everyday wear (school or combat uniforms).
I loved this new format! Not so hot on the AI, I know it's more work but I think if you had put those collages together yourself with real pieces from those different collections it would have elevated everything and made it more personal. Just like fashion!
Thanks for feedback. I find perceived quality of the video as it relates to AI interesting. Also like fashion - all subjective of of course. I prefer to work smarter, not harder 😉 But noted on the manual charm.
2 things: 1. I didn't know how good was the outfits of Yu Hakusho. Very interesting analysis. Also is cool heard your experience watching anime. 2. WHY WE ARE NOT TALKING ABOUT INFINITY NIKKI TRAILER??
Lol - i dont have TV so i dont see a lot of commercials. Nikki Infinity looks so cute and charming - I'm sure we can expect some good outfits from that.
Really cool vid! I actually didn't mind the ai art. When comes to ai art, people most have the problem that ai programs generate images using other people other, often without their consent. But if you are using images from high fashion brands just to display the clothes, I think its fine. I have only recently started following fashion and it was a nice visual aid for me to follow as someone who is pretty ignorant to fashion stuff. Can't wait for more. Don't know if you follow anime/manga Jujutsu Kaisen, but their fashion is also super cool I would definitely recommend checking them out. Can't wait for more!
I really appreciate this feedback on the AI visuals. I agree on the people front - whether it's drawings or like actual people, I've concluded that's the core of the disturbance for most people. I'm glad folks are more receptive to the mood boards. And JJK could be interesting - will do some research to see what I find.
maybe a video about the street fighter series? base outfits ofc but there’s a lot of great alternate costumes from sf4, 5, and 6 that could be pretty interesting to watch you look over
@@XDFthe “X number favorite outfits” format seems to be the best to get into a new series and also attract the most pull from a single video, and then more analysis style can follow if it intrigues enough. That’s just the opinion of someone from the outside looking in though, keep up the good work regardless
My reaction when you said that at first the AI said Gucci for Kurama, "Mm, no." and you immediately said that too 😂 I love Kurama, but then Yoko Kurama appeared and I really, really love Kurama 😂 I really love his silver/white palette as Yoko Kurama because of how much it contrasts the human Kurama.
Lol - yeah, Gucci definitely isn't the vibe. And good point on Yoko - I thought about mentioning that form - but all good, glad someone mentioned it at least
@@XDF The video is good and concise this way, though, so I agree with your decision to focus on Kurama's main form. Also, I forgot to mention this, but I like your attire for this video (as usual lowkey cosplaying), love the belt, it's giving just the right Yu Yu Hakusho vibe ❤
We are now one step away from a Hunter X Hunter fashion video
👀😏 - maybe a shorter and sweet vid in the near future

Yessss - you honestly said it better than me! I don't know if people truly understand just how innovative of a character Kurama was/is! 🌹
He is also the oldest and lowkey cruelest of the team
I’m so glad people still remember yu yu hakusho❤️
Can never forget one of the og iconic animes 🫶🏽

Bro i search on youtube for yu yu hakusho outfits and damn thanks. Cool idea I‘m impressed
Much appreciated
Glad you included Botan when it came to outfits! Yeah I remembered every other time she was on screen she’d be rocking another style

Yeeesss - thanks so much for the patience! Sincerely means a lot and goes a long way!

inuyasha is more historically-based fashion, but i'd love to see ur opinions on inuyasha!
I'll do some research - see if/how a story comes together. 👍🏽
thanks for the video
No problem 😄
I think you should look at King of Fighters fashion! I wanna know from someone in the fashion world if the characters are as fashionable as I thought
Benimaru would make for EXCELLENT sport in XDF's eyes. Also interesting on the topic of who Polnareff inspired, hehe.
King of Fighters definitely on the menu 👨🏽🍳
This was a great video very very in depth and I really enjoyed it keep it up!
Thanks a lot - glad you enjoyed the video!:D
i think i fall in love with 90s Japanese streetwear :o
Yeesss - it such great stuff 👏🏽
Nice video. Great picks for YYH. I'd be interested to see what you think of the very 80s meets Greek mythology style of Saint Seiya.
Thanks you. The Seiya looks are definitely interesting - could make for a squad style comparison vid
