It was an African American woman getting ready to take a photo of her friends near a fountain, fumbles the phone, drops it in the fountain, quickly picked it back up and continued using it as normal. THAT was impressive to me, and in my opinion didn't stretch the truth since I'm pretty sure fountains use fresh water. I have had no issues with the water resistance since, and it's been a really great phone. but not all ad campaigns are so truthful.
IP68 rating by definition means it can be submerged for up to 1.5 meters for up to 30 min. You cannot blame the average consumer for not know what type of water.

I have been using phones for the last 15 years or so and never had a water damaged phone, but guess what? I never put them near water. Stupid advertising is stupid advertising and every company that does that should cover water damage or don't pretend their phone is water resistant (up to 1.5 meters for 30 minutes bullshit). People that give IP ratings don't test every phone and there are chances that the one you bought to have a defect which makes it not water resistant anymore but if you spill water on the phone and it gets water damage your warranty will be gone.
Most people are dumb that's all why the hell will I spend all that money on my phone just to put it in water for no reason if u want to make underwater bids buy a dam underwater can water proof should only apply when it fall by accident into water or if water splash on it
finally someone who understands that salt water will actually damage your phone xD allthough, I would trust it more in a bath or something, because it is fresh water.
I now have S7 edge as my secondary phone, I have it over 3 years and I used it in every situations, I mean many pools (with chloride), at rain, in lakes and rivers, even in the sea for many times. Never had any problems with water resistant or phone generally (except battery, which of course has a less capacity than before 3 years, but it's holding very good) If you're wondering on what depth I used it, it's never been over 2.5 meters. As my primary phone I'm using note 9 (waiting for note 10+/pro) and never have problem with it in case of water resistant
I had a galaxy s7 edge used in the water for a good 10 mins it only went 2 ft below the water and with in an hour the phone starts to over heat and stops working so be careful
@Super CoolI agree that the usage around the sea, swimming pool etc are misleading, however the IP ratings are done in FRESH WATER. Why do you go on about "false impression that the smartphone can survive water" when water itself is a VERY general term, where it could mean anything from tap water to ocean water. The IP rating is there because of the reassurance it can provide, samsung is NOT telling you to throw your phone into the water - people should have more common sense. the IP68 certification states that the device will resist UP TO a certain amount of ingress protection and a certain amount of moisture protection, as dictated by the numbers. If you could actually read the article you provided maybe you'll understand more.
@Super Cool you are being idoit here. Every company uses IP rating. If the companies didn't push IP ratings then you couldn't use your phone where there is dust (like in a beach, 6 in IP rating). And the 8 in IP allows you to use your phone during rain or when somebody spills water on your phone then you don't need to worry about it. So if companies didn't push this then you wouldn't be able to use phone anyway near dust and water. Btw samsung isn't only one using IP rating, Apple, Huawei, Oppo, Oneplus (thry don't have the rating but they said that it's splash proof).
The fact you shouldn't use it in the sea or in a pool makes yet another reason why water resistance isn't worth losing removable batteries. Like seriously.
I'm just glad that I found out about this so I can avoie dropping my phone in salt water. I was under the assumption that it would works fine with any kind of liquid.
I learned a long time ago that water and electronics don't mix. I don't use my Note under water because that's asking for trouble. But there is some peace of mind that if it falls in water or gets splashed , it's going to be okay.
David Rajasekaran Well sony is still here. I see it in the tmobile store each time I upgrade to a latest samsung or apple. Actually recently, they were replaced by one plus at my local retailer.
Interesting case for sure. Agencies will try and be bold with specs and statements, that's their job. But remember, they always get reviewed and approved by the client and rarely go out without rigorous internal checks. It's not therefore the agencies fault. Also, one has to allow for "creative context" - just because you see a tidal image under a phone screen doesn't mean it's claiming to be waterproof. You had it correct with taking it with a pinch of salt though.
DurkaDurk yes that’s very likely. And also, it’s not our problem they don’t communicate. If they show it doing something and it’s not, they should be responsible anyway, not find excuses.
Water Resistant = Only a dip or a minute of dip or a big splash can be resisted by the given device. Water Proof = Designed for underwater use. Although there are some devices that can handle the properties of being Water proof but not officially known as waterproof like the Xperia series, Galaxy S8, etc.
You shouldn't be using an expensive phone in water anyway. The ratings are there just to keep you calm while it started raining and your phone got wet or you dropped a glass of water on it. No phone maker should advertise their phone as water proof. Also dropping your phone in the toilet while there is toilet cleaner to prevent limestone deposits it's stupid as well because that substance is very corrosive.
@@alexandruilea915 they advertise it as "Water-proof" so as people wil really dunk it on water and get it repaired for water damage=more money for Samsung.
If either of you has used as Samsung S7 or newer, then you would know that phones can be used in the pool or at the beach to take underwater shots and or video. I have done this with the S7edge, S8, S9, and now recently on vacation with my S10e. I have never had a problem with any of my phones becasue I do not exceed the depth or time under water and I always wash it off with fresh water. Sorry no one else knows how to read what the IP rating can do and Im even more sorry for the kind of ppl thay pay so much money for phones but never use them for what they can do.
@@josefuentes6959 If I had those phones I would use them in pools or beaches but we get scared when somehow they get water damage and the warranty won't cover it. But I'd really use it underwater with a zip bag though for additional protection and long-time recording.
@@alexandruilea915 sorry but did not understand what you meant about the seal. All I can say with certainty is for the last 4 years my self, my wife, my parents and hers as well as other family members all take underwater photos and videos with our Samsung IP68 rated phones and have never had an issue. Yet again we all know not to go past the 5ft depth and never more than 15-20 min of under water even though IP68 says up to 30min, and ALWAYS rinse your phone after with fresh water. Sounds to me like ppl just over calculate the depth or time frame under water, or forget to rinse it off and allow the seals to deteriorate.
The only phone that stopped working after submerging it in fresh water was my Z5 Premium. Never again have I submerged a phone, water resistant or not.

@Super Cool wtf, you're way off of what he said
@Super Cool your explanation still makes zero fucking sense, or you're just way off of what comment you actually should've replied to.
These a big difference in water proof and water resistant
This doesn't seem fair. OnePlus don't have IP rating and the way they prove that their phone is water resistant is by putting it in a bucket of water.

It was a Morse code guys, cmon. You should know.
@@josefuentes6959 If I had those phones I would use them in pools or beaches but we get scared when somehow they get water damage and the warranty won't cover it. Samsung must be official with the phones being able to use underwater no matter how long the user wants and will cover any water damages so we can use without the fear of losing a phone.
Either way, phones aren't meant to be put in water. The water resistance is there just to protect it from accidents.
