- I have owned my 2023 Ford F-150 Lighting for 9 months and over 10,000 miles. In this Ford F-150 Lightning Owner Review, I'm going to share the good, bad and ugly about the F-150 Lightning.

I just traded my 2022 Tesla model 3 performance for a 2023 Lightning Lariat extended range and I love the interior and literally everything else. I love this truck and will almost never need to hook it to a trailer.

Just took 600 mile road trip in cold temps. Truck performed fine. I have a Lariat ER. Was a much better experience than my Tesla.

Follow up on our Lightning. We were being bumped to a 2024. I checked the Ford website and discovered that many standard features for 2023 were becoming pay-more-options for 2024. The procharge station, the propower on board, plus a few others. Then Ford offered $7500 off the price of 2023s. We found a Lariat on the dealer lot that had what we wanted, and bought it. $7500 off, qualifies for the tax credit, came with all the stuff that will be extra cost options in 2024. I figure we came out $16K ahead. The only items it came with that we wouldn't have ordered are the color (the sparkly white) and power step ups. We traded our 2022 Mach E. We love the truck. My wife much prefers it over the Mach E. Seats are far superior, and the ride is much smoother. My only complaint is mileage: We got 4.1 m/Kwh with the Mach E. We're getting only about 2.5 with the Lightning.
They are everywhere. Why order???
I agree with much of what was shared in this video and matches much of my experience. However, I would point out that you can tow. A couple things to keep in mind about towing and range: Range is largely dependent on the amount of air being pushed, often more so than the weight. 7,000 lbs. in a big cross section square trailer is much more significant than the same weight in a more aerodynamic shape (such as a boat, or utility trailer and its' cargo). My experience (Lariat edition) with 24' boat at that weight allowed for about 170 miles including mountains and hills. Whereas the camping trailer may be only 120 miles. This serves me well as a trip to Lake Powell from Salt Lake City meant an extra hour of time charging while we ate lunch, or going to several lakes that are well within that 170 miles. I believe this works for most peoples needs, but not all.
People in these videos are constantly saying that the lightning isn't made for towing. They mention the drop in range, but they never say if you are towing locally, the lightning will tow anything a standard F150 will tow just fine. I've never had an issue with towing with my lightning platinum. In fact it tows my trailer much cheaper than my 2014 flex fuel F150 did. 10 mpg and when towing my trailer as low as 5 mpg. There wasn't a problem because it had a 36 gallon gas tank that cost me a fortune to fill up. But with my lightning which always gets better than 1 mpk and I tow 60 miles that's 60 kwh of energy, which this time of year costs me around $.07/kwh so $4.20 to drive 60 miles. Even if you get 10 mpg with your truck 60 miles will cost you the price of 6 gallon of gasoline. Much more regardless of the cost of gasoline . In fact gas would have to only cost $.70/gal to equal what I pay to tow with my lightning. I wish people would do the math. Granted if I had to depend on my lightning for long distance traveling towing or not, this isn't the vehicle for you. Local use it's fantastic.
6:58 The US and Europe are really two different worlds, for my trips all over Europe I use my Tesla model 3 (the only car of the family) with 3 children, and for day to day we use ours bikes and public transportation or walk. And when once every 10 years I need to move something very big I rent a van or even a truck (a real truck, not a pickup truck).

Wait till winter time with freezing temps and you need that heater, it will eat up that battery plus very limited range in the snow ! !
I have done some video's on winter range loss, it averages about 15-20% for most EV's in extreme cold. The Lightning is a beast in the snow, it's all wheel drive!

I've always wanted a truck with second row seats that recline. Since there's a ton of space here, Ford could have added a feature where the bottom of the seats move forward so the back and head rests recline. This will definitely help during long-distance driving.

How does this truck do in front end crashes? That big empty space up front would really concern me, like is is strong enough to not fold up in an accident?
It looks like it received overall 5 star crash test rating, 4 star front impact and rollover. 👍
I would prefer a crumple zone in front rather than a heavy engine getting smashed into my knees.
Like your review. I think the lightning is brilliant, I think after 2-3 years, when there are more used ones hit the market. I will pay cash for them.
What about battery replacement? Not all EV manufacturers cover the batteries after a transfer of ownership. Plus, what about the diminishing battery capacity over time? Ford's battery replacement warranty will not cover batteries until they are down to 70%. That means the 230 mile range can go as low as 161 miles before they will replace it. Plus, Ford says that you should keep your battery charged between 20 and 90% to minimize the battery degration. Therefore, if you keep to Ford's recommendation the real range of the vehicle is 207 miles.
I just viewed the Tesla Cybertruck on display in Matthews NC. That is badass and will definitely give F150 Lightning and regular gas trucks something new to consider over the balance of this decade. Tri-Motor Beast-Mode. AMAZING 🤩

I don't think they are in the same market. Cybertruck will do well initially but I doubt that the majority of current truck owners would go for it. If he keeps his promise on low pricing, it may force people wanting to go EV to consider a cybertruck since the lighting is so expensive. But something tells me, in Elon typical lying style, that the price is going to be even more than the lightning. It's really soon before we find out all the details. I am very interested to see how the EV truck market is going to play out. One thing I do know for sure, the cybertruck is not for me, no matter what the price. Hopefully, it forces Ford to substantially reduce the lighting price. if that happens, I will buy a couple for my company. If Lightning prices don't come down, I am not buying anything.

Just some tips; if you use this truck (or any EV) for road trips, you have to take the route it tells you to take because of the charging station availability. (no more scenic routes). Once you reach the charging station/s, there's no guarantee that they are working and fully functional. Also, besides the time you have to sit and wait for your unit to charge (if there's someone already using the chargers, be prepared to wait not only, your charging time but, there charging time as well). Oh, and also, If you are towing, you will probably have to unhook your tow to access the charging station. (who wants to do that at every charge). If your driving in hot or cold weather conditions and you elect to use your heater or AC, good luck. Using those "fancy" features will reduce your battery charge SIGNIFICANTLY, so bring a coat to wear (inside the car/truck while your driving)....Yeah, driving an EV sounds like a lot of FUN, doesn't it! 🤣
You just said it all. If I had to depend on public chargers I wouldn't have purchased my lightning.
A couple of things: If you are towing, you probably are not looking for scenic routes; 300+ miles allows for scenic routes (not towing); Many apps allow for you to see what is happening with a charger for recent time and real time including if the charger is working, in use, etc.; some chargers allow for towing while most still don't. Some apps will show you if there is room to park while towing with pictures and helped by google maps. I agree if you were constantly towing long distances, EVs are not there yet, but soon. I also wish that the Lightning charged faster. I'm guessing it was limited to maintain battery life (overly cautious, just like they did to make it a 131KWH battery when it really is about 145 KWH (90% SOC is really about 80% which is probably why they recommend 90%).
Love my new Lightning but have one thing I just noticed first day driving in the cold weather (28 F) and wondering if you have experienced it over the 10k you’ve had yours. Feels like cold air coming in through the lower part of the center console. If I hold my hand in any of the little storage areas in the center or in the big center storage bin, it’s legit freezing cold air from outside… Given my history with many brands of vehicles, I would be one of the people who gets a truck with a missing weather proofing or something…
Last winter I did notice that my feet were colder in the Lightning, this is because there is no engine heat being generated and all you have in the front is the frunk and some thin insulation, so it's colder and I usually have the heat on the foot position and ran the seat heaters. You will also notice a decent range loss up to about 20% due to the cold and running heat. I have a few video's I did on this if you're interested. My Lightning is currently in the shop due to a battery issue and I have a 2023 F-150 FX4 loaner truck. I put my hand in the center storage area and it was cold for reference.
No hot engine. But as we say at ford...lower your expectations and u won't be so disappointed. Just wait until resale or trade in time😂😂😂
I just bought an $80K Lariat with 4300 miles for $56K… I don’t tow and don’t plan travel with it. As a daily driver it is amazing. We have a 4dr Bronco for trips and staying out of gas stations feels awesome. Love the power and tech 👍🏽👍🏽

Great review. I have a 2022 tremor 3.5 and am considering switching to the lightning. I don't think range would be an issue for me, plus I get mileage for work. Only thing I need to consider is if it can get my boat to my cottage..

The key with the lightning or any electric vehicle is changing at home. The dependency of using public chargers destroys the economy of any electric vehicle. I pay $.07/kwh from Oct to June & $.12/kwh during other months. You just can achieve that economy with an ICE truck.
I think this or any EV is fine if you have a set daily commuting distance and other short trips and around town. I would have anxiety issues if going on a vacation road trip and having the constant worry of if I'm going to make it from planned point A to B without running out of juice because I can't make it to the next available changing station or the charger won't link up to my truck/EV or more unlikely if there is a power outage in that area. Also the charging wait times would annoy me.
I wouldn't have purchased my lightning if I had to depend on public chargers.
Carry a propane generator with you- if you run out of power start up the generator and recharge the truck
Ive driven cross country twice with no "big" charging issue. Only time I was concerned was when I was in rural areas. But this is doable with planning and charging options are being added every day.

The 2023 lighting xlt cost about $59000. You could Bua a $5000 used trk and do the same thing for a lot cheaper
5:29 The "drop down shifter" is the best example of a useless feature that costs a lot to produce, since on an EV you just don't need a shifter. On my first EV, the carmaker did it better than Ford by replacing the shifter by only one button (R), *20 years ago* ! So, ok for let's say 3 buttons ("D", "N", "R"), but a shifter furthermore so badly placed that you have to motorize it do move out of the way, please... BTW, "when you have lunch" you do not have anymore access to the cup holders, how brillant. And have you ever try to work of a table on your side ?

being fast isn't as important as functionality. This unit may get 35mpge while towing. So what? Most ICE vehicles will get low teens towing the same camper, trailer.. Yeah, the acceleration is good. So is the money it costs to replace tires. Anyone remember your first V8 car? For many camping local will be the best use. Grocery getter in between.
This review was very interesting to me. First, you bought a truck that you don't use as a truck. No problem, it's America. Second, you describe a very limited use case. This limits the availability of a market for this vehicle which seems to be showing up now with very slow sales. Third, you never revealed the price you paid and the depreciation of your vehicle so far. If you took the EV Tax Credit it really went to Ford because they raised the price of the vehicle by almost the same amount of the tax credit when it was passed by congress and signed by the president.

Tesla chargers are priced higher oer kwh for J1772 users than for tesla users. I guess tesla expects J1772 users to pay for the cost of their generosity.

Next time you go for a drive make note of all the people driving a pickup with one person in it. Make note of what percentage are driving with nothing in the bed. Total waste of gas because 90% of pickup owners are weekend warriors and rarely use a pickup for what its used for. Unfortunately the lightning is priced out of the avg persons range. I prefer my hybrid Maverick which is inexpensive and gets better gas mileage than a honda civic. But can still transport my ATV or trips to garden center.

I like how people completely ignore the other costs from an EV. Replacing Tires all the time counters all the other maintenance “savings” or replacing a blown motor (not the battery) because the motors can’t take the power, I could go on and on EVs are not cheaper they are EXPENSIVE TOYS for the rich (me included)

We replaced our Tesla Model S tires every 20k or 3x as often as our other cars
We got 40k miles on wife's Model Y original tires
Got 38,000 miles on my ETron tires, may could have gone another 2000 or so miles. EV Motors are built to last the life of the vehicle. Owned Many eVs over the years, no maintenance ever needed, except tires on all of them. Just purchased a used 22 lightning in July 23, and like this more than any EV. Got rid of a gas truck and 2019 etron, for it. Made a round trip of 1200 miles in it, no problems, only downside is you go over 75 mph you have stop more often.
It's a very nice truck but it doesn't work for $80,000 I'll stay with my 1500 Silverado across country for not waiting 3 hours to get charged up
It’s was not $80k, MSRP was $62 and you get a $7,500 tax incentive!

Unlike Ray o vac batteries, my lightning battery is capable of powering everything in my home for up to 10 days.
You have averaged 277 miles per week since you have owned this vehicle, or less than 40 miles per day. This is nothing in the real world…especially if the vehicle is to be used for business.
In reality that’s 14600 miles a year and while the vehicle is capable of doing 5 times more miles a day without DCFC it’s actually about 1000 more miles a year than the Average American drives, work trucks included. So not sure what real world you live in but this example is as real world as it gets on earth!
The average distance driven in the US is still just under 40 miles per day. Very real world!

You also kind of missed the point that if this truck can’t do what you want, just get a gas one. That being said the vast that’s majority of Truck buyers in the United States don’t tow or use them for work. Only about 10% of truck owners tow, anything, ever.
i feel their are a lot of ford salesmen on this thread, trying to stir up interest in their ev trucks that they can't unload on the public at any price. all i can say is, please do research before you make such a major financial mistake buying this, or ANY ev. knowledge is power.

As a Ford technician I don't think Ford Motor Company will ever survive the internet generation..now we all know in real time how bad the product is. And word of mouth fanboys will not save the reputation. I spend 60 percent of my time performing recalls....i do not recommend our products to friends or family. They will treat you like a trump supporter if u do. Always dissapointed. Credibility lost

No EV Biden mobile for me. I will keep my 2018 F150 as long as possible. Tremendous amount of torque, 459 miles of range at 75 -80 mph. Also it only takes 10 minutes to fill the tank

Your 2018 doesn't have nearly the amount of torque the Lightning has and I spend zero time charging. I literally wake up every morning to a 90% charge and 285 miles of range. Enjoy your 10 minutes pumping gas...

Takes about 30 SECONDs of my time to charge my EV. When you have 250 miles or more, you rarely ever drive more than that in one day.

9 months and 10000 miles is not enough use to give a fair review. 250 miles a week ? I usually put that plus on my truck every day 6 days a week . you might as well bought a chevy volt . Use this like a real truck and then get back to us .

As I stated, it’s not made for towing long distances. Towing around town should not be a problem if you’re ok with the range getting drastically reduced. Which Lightning model do you own?

I'm sorry to disagree with you but these trucks are made for towing. And in my experience, especially on the highway. I have an extended range, and that helps some for over the road, but its not a mind-boggling difference. I just made 2 trips towing over 4200 miles, where I charged a total of 41 times. Could not have been happier towing with my lightning over the road. It's so comfortable, and if you have some patience, it's the best over the road towing truck I have owned considering all factors. I did enjoy your video. I just wanted to clarify that not all lightning owners agree with the towing statement.
