- Galaga is a 1981 fixed shooter arcade video game developed and published by Namco. In North America, it was released by Midway Manufacturing. It is the sequel to Galaxian (1979), Namco's first major video game hit in arcades. Controlling a starship, the player is tasked with destroying the Galaga forces in each stage while avoiding enemies and projectiles. Some enemies can capture a player's ship via a tractor beam, which can be rescued to transform the player into a "dual fighter" with additional firepower.

How did I never know this? John, you’re the best. This is hands down my all-time favorite game. I have owned it on so many platforms I’ve lost count. Fun to learn something new about something I thought I knew inside and out. .
No, YOU'RE the best, Buzz. 😀 Thanks for being such a long-time viewer and sticking with us!
Probably because this play mechanic only worked on the arcade port. If it was a watered down adaptation, this never happened.
Same here 😀
This is insane that through decades of playing this game, that this detail completely went past my head. Fun to know that there is always these little secrets still tucked away in some fames
Galaga spaceship redemption arc
40 years of playing Galaga, and I never heard about this trick 😢
It's oddly cute how that feature works. I'm always impressed when these old arcade games went the extra mile in terms of design.
I loved Galaga. Seriously underrated.
I NEVER knew that. I did know that you could shoot while being captured. A couple of times I have hit an enemy this way, or even saved myself from the capture when it was my last ship.
I’ve been playing this game for over 40 years and had no idea about this. I can’t wait to give this a try!
Even though I knew this tip, this content is really great! Im glad someone in giving advice on these legendary titles, and introducing them to new audiences through youtube Shorts.
Thanks for the kind words, Mythrix. I recently learned just how few people (outside of devoted arcade hounds) know about these nuggets of tips & trivia, so producing (hopefully) entertaining shorts about them seemed appropriate. 😀
One of my favorite tricks of Galaga. That's what made me so good at it.
Over 40 years, never experienced this. Thank you for the info.
I found about it years ago! Mostly by accident. Played this game too much as a teen at every arcade I saw it at.
The sequel Gaplus let you capture 3 ships for a triple shooter.
Galaga 88 as well. (Best Galaga evar)
Such a good game Namco even converted it into a minigame for Ridge Racer Revolution--if you shoot every alien, you unlock 5 additional cars, making for 8 total
this brings me back to when my father taught me this trick
We used to have contests to see how far you could carry over the captured fight from Stage 1. I think i got to Stage 28 without killing or doubling him. We always wondered what would happen if you tried to carry him past Stage 255 to Stage 0...
That sounds amazing. Making a different game out of the game - love it!
That man is playing Galaga: thought we wouldn't notice, but we did.
I love this game! Played it today. I’ve been playing it for at least 30 years off and on. I’m back on
Absolute Classic
The feature was so popular that Galaga 88 has an option to start with either 1 or 2 fighters.
I have played Galaga since 1981 and have an original Galaga in my garage and somehow did not know this.
It was new to me when I first made this video, too!
I'm almost 26 years old and learned about this today when I was playing my Arcade 1up, then saw this video about 30 minutes later lol
Heh. Google must've been listening! 🤖
This same type of mechanic happens in galaxian if you shoot the red ships and leave the other ship alive the next time it dives if it doesn't have any red ships it'll disappear off the screen and then show up on the next level.
Oh SNAP!! I absolutely did NOT know that, and I was a galaga champ as a kid, my record was wave 74 and I thought I knew about all there was about Galaga. Thank you for this! Amazed to find something this big new after all this time.
My pleasure!
I've been playing this game for decades and never knew it!
I’ve been playing this game for about half my life and I never knew this…
That is incredibly useful! I've been playing Galaga at every arcade I go to for the past few years, and I never could figure out why sometimes my captured fighter wouldn't come to me after killing the ship that had it in tow, now I know and I'm going to use this next time I play it.
Happy to have been of help!
WHAT?! I'm nearly 26 and I've played Galaga since I was like 4 and I've NEVER seen this before!
I had no idea.
Glad to know it started earlier than Galaga '88!
I always tried to do it more than once to try and get 3 ships
Thats Galaga 88 and the newer version of Galaga arrangement (on 360) that has that feature. They call it a capital ship whereas the normal two ship formation is called a dual fighter.
I've known this for years. I discovered it by accident while playing the game with my dad at the arcades in the 80s. Galaga was The Borg before The Borg were a thing.
Holy crap! All these years and like George, Galaga is one of my favorites but I never knew this one. Really loving this series, keep 'em coming Jon.
Thanks for watching, Jon. I've got a ton of 'em coming -- I just hope I don't run out before my audience is tired of watching them! 😀
@@GenXGrownUp Never!
I absolutely never would have even guessed this
Isn't it cool how we can still learn stuff about topics we think we know thoroughly?!
One thing to note (from my experience) is that it would always go for the position of the second boss from the left. So if you destroyed that boss beforehand, there goes your chance for the double ship for that stage, and you’ll have to spare it for the next stage again…!
Then again, I was a kid playing this on the PS1 back when I’d purposely do this, so correct me if I’m wrong, lol.
That's a cool trick I'll use it next time
Very cool! Big liked! 😃✌🏾💯
???!!!????
I was today years old when I learned this!!!
Thank you!
I don't know why Namco doesn't promote this more often but there's a game called GalPlus and it's essentially galaga but with the ability to use the beam weapon yourself to capture all the enemy ships.
Gaplus. It's officially the third in the Galaxian series.
ruclips.net/user/liveU8hbX3-xLSI?feature=share
@@GenXGrownUp It was so cool in galaga legions when you get to shoot that one thing and it gives you all the enemy ships to use at your disposal I had no idea at the time that it came from galplus.
There was a Galaga 30th anniversary app on iOS like 12 years ago and it had galplus on it. That's how I found out. :( that app was awesome.
I played the hell out of Galaga, and I didn’t know that before.
I always try to get my 1st ship captured so I can get the double shooter, but sometimes I don't get it back cuz I shot it's captor at wrong time and usually feel forced to kill it. But if I did see it next stage, I usually end up fragging it while its still up top, while I'm scratching my head on how it's back in play. Thanks for the tip about getting it back on the next stage and when to kill the guy towing it...I seriously don't know how I've played all these years without knowing those specific details!
I didn't know about it that's sick
Ive been playing this game for 20 years
did not know this
Isn't it fun to learn new stuff about an old game? Thanks for watching!
You just blew my flipping brain!
I've been playing this for more than thirty years
I only learned this a couple years back myself!
WOAH!!!! I always avoid getting captured because I always end up losing it or shooting it. But I never knew this strategy. That is a clever thing lol o know. Plus I never knew my own ship would attack me (re: I always avoid getting captured…). But I might need to experiment with this now. 😎👍🏻
Make it happen!
Wow man really cool galaga is part of my life since i was a kid on a US base arcade room...
This is my favorite video game of all-time, obviously.
How did I not know this? I knew you could rescue him and y’all could team up on the bad guys, but I didn’t know if you missed rescuing your buddy that you got another chance at it.
I loved this game on turbo graphic 16. Where if you got three it forms one big ass ship that kicks ass!!!!
Bro! I thought i will loose the ship in the round and i didnt know it will return! Thanks alot jon!!
Glad I could help!
That's really cool! I haven't played Galaga in a while, I need to go back to try this out now.
I've seen people playing Galaga and the captured fighter in the new wave but I've never figured out how it happens.
I am a 90's kid, my main experience with this game was through those plug and play systems and the option to play it on the PS1 game. Did this carry through outside the arcade? I have never heard this piece of trivia and seems heckin cool.
Unfortunately not, Mike. This little exploit was nipped in the bud in the arcade well before any home ports came along.
What? I never knew about this when I Played this on the GBA!
Never knew this. I’ll need to keep this in the toolbox
Learned something new
Happy to hear. Thank you for watching.
Wow good job. That's new to me and I've been playing galaga all my life.
It was a new one on me, too. I always thought that if you killed the escort, my fighter was unredeemable, so I'd just blast him!
I did not know that!!!!!! That's awesome!!!!!!
Never knew this was a thing. About to try this out myself
I've been playing galaga for 3 years and i seriously didn't know this💀
40 years playing this and never knew this. If my captured ship went rouge, I always shot it
I never knew what happened at all when you get captured cus I always died to a shot from an enemy
Take notes boys
I did not know this and I spent a ton of quarters on this game.
I did not know that!! How did I never know this?? You clever clogs
Wow. I wish I knew this when I was 10.
Me too!
...and I call myself a Galaga expert
No judgment here - I only learned this myself about a year ago!
how did i never do that.. we love you
Cool.
and in Galaga 88, you can get two fighters captured and then rescue them for a triple fire fighter, i presume it is the same logic if you killed the boss holding it
Haven't tried yet. 88 is a bit more complex and may not preserve captured fighters between sectors.
I didn't know about that last fact!
Wow that’s very near
ive played this game since i was 5 y/o and never knew this
I didn't either until I learned a year or so ago!
YOOOOOOOOO HOW DID I NOT REALIZE THAT?!?!?!?!? DOES RELEASES AND PORTS WORK TOO?!?!?!?!?!?!?
Not sure, but if you find out, let us know!
@@GenXGrownUp ok! I’ll let you know if ports work like the gba (though I can only try them on emulator)
I remember a version of galaga that once the fighter is freed, the both ship fusion and turn bigger and fire wide blasts , anyone remember that version of galaga?
Galaga '88?
@@GenXGrownUp nop, already watched that one, not the one looking for, but thanks for the reply
I knew it and yes, had to be very careful then the next level began, not to shoot my ship, nor the carrier one.
My favorite game and I never knew this!
How did you guys not know this??
**suddenly realizes that I was rubbish at rescuing the ship**
Wow. Thx.
You bet!
There's also a secret where you can run down enemy fire for three levels
What do you mean by "run down" enemy fire?
You leave two enemy ships, keep dodging their fire and eventually they run out.
It only lasts for three to four stages then they start firing again. did it all the time.
Still amazes me how many people do NOT know this.
The captive only fires when the Galaga fires. So if the Galaga is missing it wont fire at all. You should be trying to rescue it anyways by taking down the Galaga while its attacking, so why would you shoot at it if it is by itself??
People would only not know this mechanic if they shot the captured ship ON PURPOSE. which I suppose isnt that surprising now that I typed it.
This is so cool 😎
Yo lo supe desde los 80s...
Woah i never knew that
First, I thought it was a glitch or something, but nope.
😮holy shit! I’ve got to show this to dad!
I didn't know that
I knew this at that time
When you double the fire power like this and die, doesn't this class as two lives gone?
The lives aren't gone, but they're both vulnerable. If one takes a bullet, they won't both necessarily die, and the risk is definitely worth the reward in firepower.
I love the Galaga. It’s so bad. 🧤
It's so good.
Do the joust one. It was patched out of some machines. IIRC is was wave 4 or 6?
That's a great idea. Thanks for the suggestion. Added to my list!
Even though I've played more modern games until recently, I've always loved Galaga. What's your highest score on the game?
Nothing terribly impressive, but I do enjoy playing still. We recently dedicated an episode of our weekly show to the 40th anniversary of Galaga - I learned a lot! genxgrownup.com/galaga-40th/
nice!
@@GenXGrownUp Sorry if this is a weird question, but what are your thoughts on Galaga's prequel game, Galaxian. I personally love it as much as Galaga and have covered it many times in my videos.
@@bestselling_octopus That's not a weird question at all. I have a great affinity for Galaxian and it was a regular play at my local arcades. That is, until, Galaga came along. Galaga has almost everything I like about Galaxian with better pacing and features (challenging waves, double shooters, etc.), so once it came along that kind of put Galaxian on the back burner for me.
Is three ships possible
Not in Galaga, but yes in Galaga 88.
That's fire 😂
Top tip! :-)
What happens if you already have a double ship? Can you get a triple and so on?
The tractor beam won't come for you if you already have a double ship. You can triple up in Galaga '88, though.
@@GenXGrownUp Woah. Really? Put up a short vid of that! It'd be cool for everyone to see what it looks like as a triple ship!
Does this stack? Could you have multiple captured fighters in tow using this method?
Not in Galaga, but Galaga '88 supports up to a triple-shooter.
Can it also be confirmed to happen on the Atari 7800 version? 🤔
It could be, but I haven't yet. Let me know!
Basic! I have done that 32 years ago.
🏆
Does this also apply to the NES version?
No, just the original arcade.
How did we not know this, I always blasted that mofo.
