I started WoW a year ago, and I felt the same way as this person. I did not feel like playing anything else. It’s different now, but when the WW comes out, that feeling may return. I think I got so into it because I hadn’t played an MMO like that before, and it was a fresh experience with a TON of content to dabble in.

I was a long time player since Wotlk, including a high world ranking raider and parser for years. I quit and skipped most of WoD after launch and most of Legion after just being burned out and feeling like the game just wasnt any fun (i also lost my long time guild mid MoP after i took a break from raiding, leading my 10 man guild to disbanding). I returned to the game in Shadowlands season 4 and was having an absolute blast. I got addicted super fast again, in a good way - it felt like i was a kid again. Super excited to play nonstop. This time, I did it different. I told myself that i'm not focusing on optimizing or rushing. I leveled a new character from scratch despite not needing to, a dwarf paladin, and absolutely loving it (i also never played paladin before). I understand that by S4 many of the issues of Shadowlands (except the story) was fixed already, but i was loving it so much. Eventually, i got into pushing myself again but pugging everything and playing really well and at a high level, mostly muscle memory, both in raids and M+ and pushing for more. But even then i was just having a really good time. I loved most of DF as well, but kinda burned out last year. I returned a couple months ago and was having fun, but i feel some sort of paralysis by analysis about what to play for TWW and keep bouncing between which classes to level and trying to finish my current goals on my main etc. Im overthinking again. Im overdoing again. Its time for me to quit until launch starts, and have fun again.

  • @Corwin19

It is certainly a matter of perspective. For many veteran WoW players, the game is more like a second life than a way to pass the time. Players become jaded because they become deeply invested in the game after so many years of playing, while at the same time they've played the fun out of it. For those of us that had that first-time-playing-WoW experience 20 years ago, it's easy then to forget that the game is actually fun still. It's not the same game that it was back then, but it is still WoW. It still elicits that sense of wonder for new players that veterans haven't felt in 20 years. So when we see a post like this, the immediate reaction is that it has to be fake. The idea of modern WoW being enjoyable goes against the perception of it being not what it used to be for veteran players, Who really just want the game to be so good that it gives them that same feeling they had back in the day.
At the end of the day, we love this game. We want to see it succeed and we want to enjoy our time on Azeroth. It certainly has its problems and its blemished, but such things are not permanent. The game will continue to change. If we want to see it change for the better, we will need to do our part to make it a welcoming world for new players.

Tbh and I've played for many years with a break to save my marriage 😮but I've enjoyed every expansion literally at face value and not tried to get too deep into others opinions rather being happy to make my own mind up.
Yeah there's been a few hinky bits over the years but damn if we ain't all still playing even tho a good 75+% of players apparently hate the game with a passion which is probably the hinkiest thing of all.
I love and have always loved the way the game offers several ways to play from solo, to dungeon and raid romping and kicking the fuck out of each other in pvp.
Plus the fact that the RPG gamers have been able to build their communities (no matter how weird and depraved some of them are).
It's like a big multi pack of crisps really. Most of the flavours you'll like, a couple you'll love and one or two you'll just not like.
So what do you do with those ones you don't like?
    You don't eat them.
So if you don't like a part, avoid it if you can or all of WoW then don't waste your money and time playing.
    Or
Just be a Dwarven King and keep filling in your book of grudges 😂😂😂

Blizzard made a great MMORPG but from release day 1 the WoW community was not a MMORPG community. Maybe 20-25% of the players came from DaoC, SWG or Everquest and were actual mmorpg players but the great bulk of them were RTS and Diablo players who hadn't the first clue of what an mmorpg even was and had likely spent some time ridiculing such players in the past years. However their loyalty to blizz forced them to join this new venture, even if only for the lore. So the well was poisoned from day 1 and resulted in the toxicity we see today because although the game was an mmo the community never really was a mmorpg community, it was mostly loot hungry, hypercompetitive etc types coming straight from Diablo, a community that was altogether toxic in its own right already. Blizz though, to their credit did a great job and the lore and pageantry of it did indeed immerse these not at all mmorpg type players and they were hooked, but the community never had a chance. Even today, twenty years later you can see this in the way people play, use their UI and in the social dynamics of the game, but if you were never really a mmorpg type of gamer you can't even see this. The best the WoW community has ever been was during the closed beta, if only because anything could change on a daily basis, nothing was certain so FOTM and min/maxxing etc was irrelevant. Original vanilla was quite nice as well b/c these Diablo'ers were quite literally blown away by the product, they were in awe and so largely neutralized. Also there was no formalized PVP system for a long time during initial vanilla so these maladapted would be mmo'ers had nothing to do that was their accustomed style of interaction and play, maybe this was intentional I don't know, but what I do know is that in the long run Blizz's attempt at "domesticating" their previous RTS/Diablo player base failed and here we are.

i have quitted wow the game is just doomed both because of blizzard losing all its talent and having a bad mindset and the ultra toxic players that keep supporting bad things and are against good things and do a lot of trolling. most mmos have better communities and even most wow private servers are not as toxic i have no explanation why its like this. i used to think it was because of the changes in cataclysm but now that doesn't seem to be the case since the official classic got quite toxic too yet private servers and other mmos with similar game play to modern wow are not as bad so it just makes no sense. i tell everyone to try out other mmos and not just the ones everyone else is talking about. like i like lotro now a lot of people say its bad but its really not it has a good balance between old school design and modern design and it has some features that are not in wow but it lacks some others but i tried out ff14 it was too linear and casual for me. then i tried Albion online it was too far in the other direction you just had to grind random things and do pvp boring so i found this random game and enjoyed it. but you should try and check out many mmos an maybe you will find something much better than wow if you try enough games most are free or have a trail and have low system requirements.

The problem with wow and a lot of online games in general is that you can't play them like games anymore. You have to be on all the time. And there's so much foma behind everything that when you Miss A day. You feel like you miss sound. That's not how gaming supposed to be. It's supposed to be a pastime for when you have nothing else better to do. It's not supposed to be a 24 hour lifestyle.

yeah those are all the new generation of wow players who have started in Shadowlands that are just constantly brown-nosing just how good retail is and that they've never had more fun in ANY other video game.
I had to experience the same shit when i decided to give dragonfail a chance after skipping on chorelands and joined a guild of people only consisting of thse types of players.
You can try however you want, but you will never be able to convince them that the old formula of wow has been better and not this clusterfuck of 4 different currencies PER PATCH for gearing nowadays and the literal copy pasting of "community fill the bar events" is just boring and lazy as shit.
I even told them 1 year in advance that i knew that blizzard tasted blood, after doing the Fated Season in SL (which Ion tried to convince us that this was only because of Covid and the lack of Manpower in the company back then), that this will be the new "Standard" for wow content releases, which is literally just Blizzard releasing 1/4 less content for the same if not more box price of an standard 4 patch cycle expansion, like they did BACK IN THE DAYS.
And what happened? yeah you guessed wrong, they insulted me for talking such nonsense and spewing "false" information about stuff i have no idea about, yet i had played this game since 2007 and they only started in 2020, and that i should just stop being such a "doomer".
And now HERE WE ARE! Fated Season 4 and future expansions being only about 1 year instead of the usual 2 years, with 100% less content and even then having fated bolted onto them at the end just so that they need to develop even LESS content per full box price expansion.
