Not exactly, the balances still exist with FTX and there is a bankruptcy officer appointed who is working to recoup some of the money. Until the process is concluded and all assets are liquidated, the losses are APPARENT because there is no final amount for every individual involved that they "lost."
Right now it's just a difference between "owed" and "available". It becomes important in financial calculations, for example tax liability or balance sheets for investor companies and individuals.

Caroline Ellison spoke about this subject in one of her interviews but the interviewer was so dumb he didn’t follow up on the importance of the subject.
