Touched all the problems facing gamers across Africa from parents prejudice on gaming to poor internet connection just hope something is done fast because it will help take a lot of kids of the streets and it will be most nice to see even the private sector in e-sport
Two days ago, my opponents had 250+ ping in EU server Rocket League, asked where they are from, they kindly answered South Africa. Meanwhile I had 100+ ping in Turkey which is still too much to play in any competitive play, every interaction with the ball is corrected by the server after 100ms. That means, you are seeing someone hitting the ball on your screen, that information has a chance to corrected as "no hit" 100ms later, which causes the ball to change direction against the physics and teleport somewhere else. It's just not possible to play. Geography is destiny! There seem to be only one way to get over this situation so far, stick with me. You may think that every country must have a server, but I will tell why it's not possible. Companies doesn't like to do that not because of costs since maintaining servers must be more expensive in EU/NA region rather than having cheap labor of developing countries. Companies doesn't like to do that because they are binded to local laws of the country. Think that you have opened server in dictatorship country but local laws ask every little bit information of 100 million players overseas; how long they play, which pc components they use, where they live, what they type in game chat etc. And while dictatorship asks these informations by the force of the law, EU consider these are private information and preventing the share of information with other companies/countries by the force of the law. If you have server in dictatorship, you can't have server in EU, you must choose one or another. If the rumors are true with the Elon Musk's Starlink; NA, EU, Asia, Africa and Oceanic countries can connect lower than 50-100ms ping worldwide. And 5000 km to closest server would be like 25ms with the lasers. It's still too much expensive tho and not complete yet. In the modern world, your connection speed and bandwith/cost ratio is direct sign of how civilized country you are.
Not until the continent becomes developed. Can't even play online games because game developers don't even bother putting African servers because they know it's a waste of money.
South African here. E sports will only grow if developers put local servers, games like Apex Legends aren’t doing well here as its 200ping to connect to EU servers and makes the game frustrating to play. Games like Dota 2 and CS GO are doing very well here because they have local servers
Numbers are not good enough because the servers are far XD. Chicken and egg circles. Ultimately it comes down to economics. We need to show regional brands the huge marketing potential in investing in the growth of the gaming and eSports industry in Africa. This will create a domino effect in infrastructure development, lower costs of hardware, internet prices, importation tax, etc, leading to increased gamers and audience numbers. Global brands will naturally follow suit and then we'll suddenly see servers popping up all over the place in the region. We need to follow the money.
As an East African gamer part of the Navvi Gaming Org Uganda, its definitely difficult trying to have a career in esports on the continent right now. The equipment is quite expensive. The internet is also expensive and also very unstable and weak. There is no financial backing from anyone, we push things for ourselves because we want to make things happen. But at the end of this obstacle, when Africans are part of the global esports scene, those existing brands will feel the pressure. The thirst is there. The hunger is there. We are ready.
I live in America and im African i will tell you what Africa needs Super high internet speeds is every major city in Africa and industrial Also, esports and game development is soft power to African nations with beautiful untold cultures Also the younger the better before esports we need games development, games can be good only at a competitive or content creation level Also African countries need to make deals with Taiwan and South Korea
Wow, what a cool segment. Mobile gaming is an emerging area, especially relevant considering that mobile phones are sometimes more accessible than the latest gaming consoles. Pubg mobile is an especially popular game, based on pubg for PC.
As the man said the key is having younger people in government that can relate to the younger tech savy generation, the whole Internet problem in African countries is really holding off on potential business sad
The thing that excites me the most, we are going there, here in Angola we are already seeing improvement, I am a young man, and I am working toward to having a very big eSport industry in Angola....😉🙃🙃🙃🙃

Definitely. We need bigger structures to work together to make a change.

Local servers need player numbers. Many developers don't deploy because they do not believe the numbers are good enough :/
