The forerunner to this car was the 1986 Rover Vitesse Twin Plenium & when Tom Walkinshaw started working for Holden, he utilised much of the Rover tech in this car including twin intake throttle bodies, front spoiler & rear air wing. Excellent review.
The fuel injected 5L V8 from 1989 was basically the same motor without the twin throttle bodies. In the late 90s you could pick these up for around $25k and a VK SS group A for around $20k
Me mate had one back in the early 2000s. I didn't care too much back then cause I was into my motorbike but looking back it a great car for Holden. Definitely bring back memories.
I haven't seen a VL Walkinshaw in 10+ years, they must all be locked up haha. Good to see one on this video, they are VERY unique with that body styling
I remember my mates Dad bought one brand new and he used to drive it like a maniac everywhere he went. I couldn't understand how he still had a licence.
I owned one of these on my P's back in the mid 90's (#186 If I remember rightly). Paid $24k for it and traded it for $18k a few years later. Yet another one of life's regrets.😢
I have seen one previously that had a fluted kit attachment , this ran across the roof over the top of the rear window. It appeared at the time I seen it that the flutes were aimed at the rear spoiler and I can only assume that it was aerodynamically relevant. This was in Perth WA. Regardless it really suited this weapon of a vehicle. Never seen one again. I am not a fan of the VL, likely due to the whatever they called the boot riser, and GMH’s somewhat misguided approach to replicating a nismo style vehicle. The Walky though to me was keeping it real. I previously had a standard VK Calais that was the proud recipient of a VS Clubsport body kit. The only mod was cutting in the rear bumper to suit. Group A bonnet scoop and grill also applied. Breaks my heart that GMH is no longer manufacturing in OZ.
Both Wheels and Modern Motor had them in high 14s for the quarter. Fastest factory locally made car since the Phase 3. Not bad considering the restrictive exhaust, low compression, and tall diff. But didn't matter anyway, as they existed just to homologate the body kit and engine parts for racing. Eventually winning Bathurst in 1990.
I bought one new back in the day when they actually had a herd time selling them. Wish i still had it. Awesome car back then.
how much did you pay? :D

What a piece of Au history. Props to you for driving it on a public road and Darren letting you. 👏

The underdog at Bathurst that went on to win. So nice this car. I miss the Group A days of Racing. What a beast
My father-in-law had one, from memory it was number 086, it was his company car. I remember the clutch was really heavy. Awesome car.
The standard 122kw 4.9 liter v8 3 speed auto did 16 sec 1/4 miles , this 180 kw walking walkinsaw did around 14.8 I believe, it's been a long time
Correct mate, getting that bit wrong through me off the video pretty quick...Get an opportunity to drive a Walkinshaw and get wrong?
Awesome car.... great video. there were 2 factory black VL wakies made.
My best mate had one and let me drive it, best experience ever.
Awesome car mate, thanks for the rundown!
True classic! Thanks for the video

Grew up with the poster on the wall, love the VL Batmobile.
Absolutely legendary Car. My Hoon mates when I was a youngster in the 90s were always talking about the Walkinshaw.
Amazing Car-Thanks for the video 👍
I remember in the early 2000’s or late nineties they were going for early 30 grand

Of course it’s a great car but the Calais with the 3/4 pop ups on the front 🤤
I owned one sold it back in 2000 build number 639....wish I knew where it was now
‘There’s nothing quite like a V8.’
total dream car lol nothing on the road looks like one of these, if I ever get a vl its definitely getting turned into a pretend walkinshaw lol
Saw a walky on the road in Melbourne on I think it was the weekend, mightve been you
I walked passed a few when they were new at some car yards, cost was $42 k back than, lol.

I’m jealous, but would also have been stressed driving such a rare car

Beautiful bro
It did a high 14 sec quarter not 16
Its a crying shame we don't see these on the road anymore.
16 second? Wrong according to wheels magazine it was 14.85, with a 0 to 100 times of 6.8 seconds
That's still impressive even by today's standard
Yeah buddy!
Both Wheels and Modern Motor had them in high 14s for the quarter.

The kid at 3:28 is literally me if I saw one of those. My mouth would be frothing haha
Only 750 ummm what about the Calais based ones ?
They were probably replicas. Used to see them a lot when all the parts were easily accessible.
Very iconic, stands out like dog balls though
An inconic car my wife owned a Walkinshaw #454 she should never have sold it. I owned a Bathurst 1972 GTR XU1 I never should have sold it either😢
A LOT of these were stolen and found dumped with the twin throttle body intake and interior gone.
750 made and another 7500 replicas 😢
Not sure they actually made 750 in the end either this or the vn grpa didn’t see out it’s full production run, they allowed it to race anyway

Wow, my Mazda CX5 produces the same KW, doesn't look anywhere near as good as this.
Went for a spin in one once upon a time. For a performance car it seemed to lack at of of performance. They look cool but that’s where it ends for me.
A crawlinshaw, plastic overload. Strooth!
Looks like a bull dog but still cute
180kw's from a 5 litre v8 and heaps of plastic, mmmm.
Shit box
Mine gets bagged enough just in the comments let alone it actually being shown lol
