- In this talk, Palmer Luckey, creator of the Oculus Rift, outlines his vision for virtual reality's future. He will discuss where we are in the evolution of VR, the current and future potential of this limitless technology, where the opportunities in VR lie for game studios, and how VR will ultimately impact the way developers make, and consumers play, games. The talk is geared for any studio head who wants to understand where VR is headed and how best to to capitalize on its growth.
Unforgetable the way he leaped off the stage.
I love the sandals Palmer, never lose your touch.
Every time he pauses, he's flashing back to an amazing experience in the VR we have yet to even dream about for CV1.
this or coke :)
Some seats are empty!
Unbelievable!
This man is one of the best visionnaire of our time!
have you looked at the htc vive yet
11:26
GOLD
AHAAHAHAHHAAAHAAHAHAHAHAH
Hehehe, epic face fart XD
You gotta love Palmer. Doesn't need to excuse himself, he just chugs along, like a BAWSS...
Is he coked up?! :D
replayreplayreplay:D
xD
He was pretty decent at presenting for his age, and he'll only get better, plus he's got the knowledge to back it. Well done. Very informative about the challenges ahead without the sugar coating.
What I love is that VR seems to be making developers and designers go back and fix [throw out] so many bad habits that I see in modern games and doing things the right way again, as I see it.
So, less focussing on adding in endless shaders at the expense of smooth frame rates. Less focussing on these often boooring "realistic" dull graphics and instead creating games that look clean and vibrant and focus on the quality of the object, even untextured, over adding in all this bump mapping and specular highlighting and bloom lighting and all that other unnecessary crap. It's more about the actual artistry of the world before you again. Less designing games that don't consider simple things like proper scale and proportion. Less focussing on non-interactive hand-holding linear scripted and cinematic movie sequences and instead making what you actually do yourself in the game drive the story and action forward...
VR might be the sort of reboot and regroup the industry needed to get back to making games the are all about the actual experience of actively playing, interacting and immersing yourself in these amazing unique video game worlds rather than basically trying to make glorified interactive movies with what I consider the greatest entertainment medium ever created by man; video games.
I am sooo looking forward to seeing the future of VR as it continues to grow and evolve...
Just got the DK2!! I believe! I believe!
11:25 , damn he was real sick
+NachoLZ I lost it at that part! Poor bastard, that's probably why he ran and hopped off stage at the end. XD
yeah hahah
his style of clothes :)) and he is the most famous man of technology now :))
I have stage fright and hate public speaking and can say from experience that the stopping from breath thing is just because you're so nervous that you forget to breathe and you just try to keep talking and your chest gets tighter and tighter and you don't even realize but your holding a lot of air in after a while so you have to keep stopping for air.
He just needs to learn to stop thinking about everyone else, take a moment and let it out, then start again.
I'm just going to say that at least 50% of people I know from Long Beach wear flip flops on the regular.. LMFAO
Also, major props to this guy for doing this.
That dismount at the end. lol
For the love of God, ditch the flip flops
I would only want a man wearing flip flops to bring the world into VR.
wow, really on topic comment todd. well done.
Nano Hindaly
exactly, those kinds of people really are the idiots, they always make themselves look like jackasses
For the love of God, ditch your profile pic!
What he sayed there is happening, and that's amazing
Good talk Palmer. One thing -- it's "spatial" not "spacial."
Really enjoy your talks Palmer. Come to Roccat Studios in Hamburg and we'll play Street Fighter. I've trained the programmers and they have gotten really good. :)
my idea of VR is taking sensory information from your brain and making that an input/output. you think of moving your hands, hands in game/VR environment move, and you feel what you touch in game... lots of memory will be needed for such projects. at least 100G to implement feel, smell, taste, sight, and hearing is my guess... mayby less, 100 is a rough estimate, price would be about $700, i would pay it... would you?
There is no question this will be implemented in the future, but probably later and inside a seperate product.
Sounds great. Will you be going to kickstarter with that soon?
what is kickstarter?
Jacob Pucher A crowd funding website. People who invent stuff often use it to help finance their projects. Oculus Rift, Cyberith, Virtuix Omni, Contol VR, PrioVR and many others used it to fund their virtual reality products.
well i have an idea of what should be composed in my version of a VR headset...
far too complicated to explain in a RUclips comment.
i am watching this for a technology assignment I'm doing based on VR and I suddenly realised what he is wearing. . . I have to say it's kinda funny but still this is really helpful right now
so freakingly true point at 3:49
Thats typical Palmer for you, Comfort over style, Good on him!
Sorry didn't ask that right. I mean would we wear a body suit that give the sensations or would it somehow connect to our nervous system?
I think Palmer needs to check if he has some kind of respiratory issues or something because it looks like he struggles quite a lot to get enough air, or has issues swallowing or something. Just an observation but I don't want this dude popping his clogs long before his time. He has a lot to offer this industry and potentially this world.
Always an interesting speaker though, despite being slightly awkward to watch at times.
Maybe he's nervous.
inceptional he is a fat nerd he doesnt know what fitness is
+inceptional he had a cold guys, jeez
I can't wait to see what happens in the future with VR, tho while watching this, it felt very painful seeing this guy swallow and squint a lot, kinda felt like he was having a panic attack in small bursts on stage.
Palmer what happened @ 11:27 ?
+pureVR Thinking the same. *saying 'wtf did he do?!' *
Well, he rallied and pulled though, good job Luckey.
So what if this guy is a bad speaker, he's a nerd, no doubt, but so is Zuckerberg, Bill Gates, Steve Jobs, but these are the guys who change the way we view the World and interact with each other.
This new era entertainment
Go VR!
I can't help but wonder if Palmer has in the back, of his mind the value
of his VR, as perhaps a rumor he got wind of, that his idea could be
worth an astronomical amount . Is eyes look upward for an instant as he
sells his product. Just hold on he seems to, bodily say. I see this in
many of his videos. Looking stunned for a moment. Maintaining his
composer. He steps back for a second and continues selling it forward.
lol
Hey my name's Palmer Luckey. Thanks to all the Kickstarter backers for making me a millionaire. Oh and the dev kit I sent you...yeah that's already obsolete. See ya, wouldn't wanna be ya!
he is wearing flip flops and i find that awsome
Anyone have an official release date or a speculation on one
Finally! SAO! ._.
No entiendo que le pasaba. Estaba mal de salud? Eres grande Palmer! Si Steve Jobs estuviese aquí te aplaudiría. Quizás lo esté haciendo en el más allá! // I do not understand what was wrong. He was in poor health? Palmer are great! If Steve Jobs were here you would applaud. Maybe I'm doing in the afterlife! (Sorry for my bad english)
He gained weight, his suit doesn`t fit well, those flip flops...but it`s all forgiven, for he is bringing VR to us.
5:04.."I'm a little short-sighted." That may very well be true.
I like Palmer's speeches very much - also what he talks about and of course I love the oculus rift. I don't want to sound like a smart-ass, but there's a difference between subconsciousness and Unconscious mind
. When talking about "Presence" the unconcious is very important to understand. I think, when Palmer talks about the "sub-concious level" he means the unconcious-mind... en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Unconscious_mind#Unconscious_processes_and_the_unconscious_mind
11:20 I definitely disagree. The best games on the Wii were the ones that used more traditional controls and used motion controls as an afterthought (Super Mario Galaxy, Twilight Princess, Mad World, etc)
Ahh that makes more sense.
Looking at the current generation of consoles, we're already reaching diminished returns graphically. It really wasn't that big of a leap from previous generation to current, especially for PC gamers with mods. Sure we can push further, but the development cost of pushing further is increasingly disproportionate for the gains. We'll reach a point where it's just not cost effective to push the hardware, and what pushes the hardware offers minor gains.
That isn't necessarily a bad thing. It means graphics will plateau while hardware continues to improve, making it cheap to access. It also means we'll have all this excess hardware power to do things that don't necessarily increase the cost of game production, but changes the experience.
Oculus doubles the frames needed to be rendered since each eye receives a slightly different angle, at 1080p for the retail version at that. That's going to need a lot of excess performance not being drained by game graphics to keep the frame rate up.
It'll take you to Halflife: Alyx. Thank you Palmer Lucky for who you are, not what you represent. 🙌💪👪😻👷💅
So there will be time where you could feel the heat from a fire in virtual reality. How in the world would that work?
I would wager that it will be based around the way to body reacts to heat, and the neurological signals that are sent during the process of feeling heat / being burnt. If we can crack how the body tells the brain what is going on we will be able to manufacture it with careful and accurate electrical / electromagnetic signals into the body.
Several months ago a study began on a baby before it was even more than a few cells, the purpose of said study was to see how the brain develops in a highly detailed and sophisticated study. It's likely when that stuff is analyzed we will see the jump in medical / neurological technology that we need in order to produce full dive VR.
I bet by 2025 or so we will have the right amount of know-how to build or have build at least a prototype full dive system.
I want to be the 1st to make a completely immersible V.R. music video.
Who did it?
Future Trillionaire
gulp. gulp. gulp GULP. GULP. GULP! GUUULLP!!! shit god damn man
never trust a man in flip flops
Is it safe to say that the consumer Oculus might come out next year?
Ps to haters- Yes he's wearing flipflops but you can't judge him when he's making more salary than you.
Sushi Roller flip flop wearers are more intelligent than the average
17:34 "There is a" reason we DRUG ourselves to Vegas " ahahah he meant drag our selves
Is this not live or something because he is thanking everyone there...... and lots of the seats are empty.....
The message you are putting out there is very good and interesting but the delivery is very hard to sit through. You have bursts of showmanship which makes it very easy to follow your ideas, but then you do that hiccup and it becomes very difficult to pay attention. In the beginning, you talked about the mass of disposable income that you have, maybe for your next talk, you could hire a faceman for your idea? You seem like a freakin genius at such a young age, and again, I am very excited and willing to pay you now and in the future for your ideas. But please, the hiccups gotta go.
Why can't they combine Oculus with Emotiv or Neurolink...They would be more close to "The Matrix"
All I hear is him struggling to breathe. I hope he's not having a heart attack.
he's just so damn exited. this is his life dream coming to life.
hahah we love you palmer
No Palmer, you were the chosen one!!!!!! Fuck Facebook
That speech was a little dicey.
I think hes written a script on his eyelids.
that was kind of uncomfortable to watch
No socks? SHOCKING!
Why does he not like to use glasses?
11:26...He had to have wanted to spit that out.
"They'll totally still like me after Facebook takes my dream away!"
I'm gonna wear vr1 while I sleep
what if they create a sleep simulator, how would you know if you are sleeping or awake lol
Flip Flops.
don't forget the blue jeans
What the hell is up with the sandals!
I think he had the hiccups. Still, great presentation.
Is he near-sighted because he's using his own product?
Carmack left id to work for this guy?
Shit! I'm going to be too old! =_=#
You guys are all nitpicking his appearance while he's off inventing things and becoming a billionaire, yeah you guys are definitely much cooler than him :)
Why does he always have to swallow every two seconds?? Is it because of the stress?
TreeroyJ Lol, well, I would argue that when you decide to found your compagnie and to be the president you have to take the job as a hole. And you know, their is formations on how to make a public speech, he should consider to take one.
DRINK SOME FUCKING WATER!
I've said this before, but let me say it again. Oculus you need 2 hire some public speakers with good speaking voices, who dress in a professional way 2 represent your company. Remember "IMAGE" is everything. With all do respect... Palmer needs 2 fade into the back round he looks like he sleeps with his clothes on, and he comes across very bad on stage.
+Bob Anderson I am glad that we are evolving to a level where 'image' is NOT everything. Authenticity and quality are taking centrestage, instead of getting mired in showmanship. Wake up!! And smell the coffee... There is no standard formula for success anymore. One doesn't have to be a conformist robot to succeed at anything. The world is becoming more accepting of people in their authentic avataar rather than insisting they should fit a particular mold.
Great talk, but Palmer has to learn how to dress!
Lol, he may be a great inventor, but he is sooo not good at giving conferences! Seriously, he litteraly stop talking and you see the stress in his eyes... He remember me the time when I had to watch some highschool students doing a bad presentation in front of the class...
these guys may be the coolest nerds in the world but they do not know how to run a business
They seem to be doing pretty good to me.
Skateboss369 did you buy a dk2?
He's a goon it's okay
Daniel Vera Palmer's got stairs? OK.
is palmer on coke in this video?
totally..
9:40 Yeah... No. We're still not even CLOSE to "human eye resolution displays in VR". That's like 60ppd when the best we're at BEST at 30ppd in 2023.
This guy is the new Steve Jobs. Apple sign him up!
Too late. Facebook bought his company.
