  • Serving the Under-served: Lessons from A Real-world Journey is the topic for the lecture by Shri. Sridhar Vembu (BTEE-89 ), Co-founder, Zoho Corp (formerly AdvenNet) held at IC & SR Auditorium, IIT Madras.
In this presentation, Shri. Sridhar Vembu shares some insights we have learned from Zoho, to highlight one possible path to success in life and business: serving the under-served. That fundamental idea reflects in the way we recruit, the way we find markets for our products, where we locate our offices and the communities we engage with.
    About Shri. Sridhar Vembu:
Sridhar Vembu obtained his B.Tech. in Electrical Engineering in 1989. In 1996, he co-founded AdventNet, which later evolved to become Zoho Corp, based in Chennai. Today, Zoho is emerging as the business operating system in the cloud, offering a comprehensive suite of online software applications for business. With over 2500 employees, Zoho is the largest software product company from India, while remaining private and profitable

Context-free education (learning without any objective) is what 90% of colleges are Teaching. Contextual education is what we really need to master any subject/topic. Have an objective first before learning anything. Regardless of your colleges, degrees.

great lecture .. the mental liberation that Sridhar saw by burning his thesis is at a point when he already reached the epitome of academics.. the only issue with that is , only if you get there and have it all , you will see the value of loosing / getting rid of it .. but for the vast majority they are still trying to get there or never been there to realise that it actually doesnt really matter.... But this lecture and the message that sridhar carries everywhere is so inspiring that indian youth need to pay attention to this man . Sridhar is the right person to carry this message because he has been there and done it .

Sridhar, If you see this message, do reply. :)
Zoho is making a group of citizens who can write a code. But do you think Zoho programs will be able to find another leader like "Sridhar" among the students? Honestly, I doubt it. We need the university programs not to teach a student a bunch of career skills, but to breed a batch of educated citizens in an environment built on the pillars of free speech and critical thinking. These pillars may enable these students to explore their potential in various domains, and honestly, getting a job or finding their career is just a byproduct of those explorations. Still, I do agree that Zoho is doing well financially. Nevertheless, we need our university programs to find the next Sridhar.

I think if someone works with Sridhar there is a better chance of being a visionary like him than by working out university courses. This is called Leading by Example. I don't agree to "Bunch of people who knows to code", they are learning how things work. Edision was like that, very much so.

It all comes down to cost. Zoho does not want to afford high pay for strong talent. So they are building their own grass roots tech pipeline.

The number of people hearing the speech is less,if the event had been advertised,we could have had more audience

Interesting talk, although it didn’t seem as if the audience - being students of an elite educational institution - quite appreciated or understood the talk. I doubt I would have. I needed a bunch of failures to knock some sense into me.
That said, I wish Sridhar had emphasised the importance of liberal arts a lot more. He did talk about it, favourably I thought, but I wasn’t sure how he’d square it with contextual education. I devoured Russell in my free time while pursuing my Engineering degree. I remember cursing myself for not becoming acquainted with his works sooner, but in retrospect I could say with certainty that I wasn’t ready any time sooner.
