Fun years! I was born in 1959. The Toy Soldier Co in New York sells recast sets of Marx that are really nice but oh so expensive! I sold a huge collection of Marx, Timpo, Elastilon, Timi and many other soldiers fof around $500 to a friend about 20 yrs ago. Tried to buy them back but he wont sell them back to me. I estimate the total value over $1000. I had alot of really rare figures. I was just going through some really lean and hard times then. It was really cool seeing all this stuff.

Woah love the giant rifle !,neva knw marks produced such good quality figures...thm wagons r awesome, thy look like little ppl..how much did all tht cost u?...please show more of your collection...cud i buy some?...or the whole lot..being serious...there r grands worth of gud quality soldiers there...mark is a really good manufacture..even tho their old now,i,d say thy r better thn airfix and britains sets
marx made the best detailed figures and playsets. i had a number of the johnny west/best of the west action figures. their 6" us marines figures are the best molded ones that were copied by other toy companies
Marx had excellent figures but they didn't exactly conform to historical events. For instance, they would put Mohawk haircuts on Indians in sets that were supposed to relate to western times. Even as a kid I knew this wasn't right. The weapons were often wrong as well, as you would see guys with Winchester rifles in what was supposed to be an 1830s-40 setting. The American GIs that were supposed to be WW2 soldiers were often carrying M-14s, which didn't come out until the 60s. The Civil War guys were pretty accurate. Another thing was that the buildings that came with the sets were smaller scale than the figures. They looked like they were built for midgets. I remember the metal house with the white plastic porch and columns to be placed in front of it. I was probably 5 years old when I put in out to play with but even then I remember asking why it was so small compared to the soldiers.
Well, here's the thing about Marx and his playsets: His target customers were 7 to 12 year old boys. As kids we didn't get too caught up over woodland Indians mixed in with plains indians, most toy makers back then also made mohawk indians mixed in with apache type and plains indian types. Auburn comes to mind, as does MPC. Same with his civil war sets, an artillery man with a backpack?? Again, kids loved them. The biggest thing about Louis Marx was he understood that kids liked army men and he developed his playsets around the plastic figures. He competitors did the opposite, developed figures around the playsets and as a result kids usually got very few figures in those sets. Even the Ben Hur set Marx did showed his genius. MGM actually sent reps to his office in NYC to help him develop it, showed diagrams and photo's of the movie sets, etc. When the Marx Ben-Hur playset came out it had gladiators in it. There were none in the movie but Louis told his production people: Put gladiators in it, kids will like them, they'll use their own imaginations to make up their own games, etc. He knew that kids loved plastic army men and his attitude was "let's give them as much as we can". Louis got it, that's why his company was so successful.
@@TWS-pd5dc Oh yeah, I loved them all. I just couldn't understand why they didn't make buildings and vehicles to scale with the fighting men when it would have made it more fun.
