If I feel stuck, I like watching other creatives like you journalling and it helps me to feel inspired, I then have a play in my journal and see what happens. If I try and plan it, then it just doesn't work. I love how you say find something that sparks joy, I will stick your recipe/process in the front of my journal to remind me how to get going if I feel stuck. Thank you :)

I love how you phrased “choosing a piece” as “auditioning it”! That is a great descriptor phrase to explain it.

Thoroughly enjoyed this video, I think experience creates process. Before I started doing rather than just watching, I was overwhelmed because I couldn’t see the end from the beginning. You have been a wonderful tutor and encouragement as well as inspiration! Love your page today, you are brilliant!💕🇨🇦

I'm very new to junk journaling. For me, even getting started is a challenge. I've done small pieces, here and there, but never done a whole page.
The fact that women are more common, so far as I can tell, in junk journaling, has made finding my voice challenging. I'm having to examine what masculinity in this art form means for me, which is a valuable new experience as an artist.
The fact that one of the projects that inspired me to try junk journaling will use irreplaceable ephemera from my horse owning days has made me very nervous about ruining those pieces with decisions made with inexperience.
I've had to take a step back, and start what I'm calling a "disposable journal", something where it doesn't matter what it looks like, where I can learn, and play, without pressure on myself to create something good, because it's only meant for my eyes. For this period of early growth in the art form, I'm falling back to bullet journaling, where I only have pressure to create simple pages, which prioritize information first, and aesthetics second. Any large blank spaces left at the end of a month will become my practice areas for larger compositions and elements.
So far, I can say that my voice leans to the neutral papers, particularly coffee dyed or aged paper and softer ghost images juxtaposed with hard lines and dark, bold, colors. I also love the handwritten notes and naturalistic sketches and watercolors found in naturalists' field journals. I'm finding further inspiration in art created en plein air, but also in the engineering and technical drawing I learned as an engineering student.
When I'm more confident in my voice, and how to express it, I'll return to the horse journal that inspired me to start this journey of exploration, but for now, I need to play, and learn, to find out which materials will express my artistic voice in this medium.

You’re always so inspiring!! Love the poem! Quick tip: you can make that paper using natural beeswax and thin paper such as dictionary pages. I have a tiny iron dedicated to only beeswax. Sometimes I’ll ink up my paper first to get different colors. Thanks again for always helping give me a jump start to creating. 💜

I ALWAYS overthink. and I'm ok with it. it's part of my brain's process. then I just start and go with the flow. it seldom ends up like I envisioned it. (I'm not Tim Holtz or Simon Hurley) but I usually like it. if i try to just pick stuff up and go with it without thinking FIRST, it ends up looking like a kindergartener did it. I would love it if people would stop telling us overthinkers to stop. like we're bad or flawed or not good enough. we don't tell you to stop just going in willy nilly as though you're somehow flawed. Everyone has their own process and for them, it IS the right way. I love watching people who can just dive in and end up with a masterpiece. I love your page today, Barbara, and watching your process, though different from mine, helps to inspire and get me moving. watching these tutorials helps me to overthink not so much...or maybe faster? lol at the least it helps to stop fretting so much and being so self judgemental (which is why we don't need others judging us too) and experimenting more. Thank you! I LOVE your found paper and how you used it.

This was so awesome. Loved the process and the poems. Both feel so relevant to my daily life and junk journalling. I just have so many ideas, or get so much inspiration from watching the videos but when I sit at the desk I just get overwhelmed. I think I just have to do it.

I am like you in that sometimes I look at a blank page in a junk Journal, especially if I'm making it for a gift for someone I know and love, and I too am frustrated and not sure what to do next. But I follow a very similar process as yours. Step by step adding one thing at a time and Imagination just starts to flow. I love junk journaling so much. And I appreciate all the work you put in to sharing your wonderful ideas your sense of humor and your open honesty with all of us. Love and hugs

I think we all have ‘blank page syndrome’ sometimes and I do what you do, find something I really love and want to use. For me it is usually about colour, I might see a colour and just want to use it. I think the most important thing is to just start, the more you try to think about it the more overwhelming it. If you hate it you can cover it over and start again. I love your chunky, cuddly journal.

Barbara, I watched this, this morning first thing. I had a procedure done on my back last Monday!! It’s made me fall asleep at the weirdest times. But tonight I was trying to remember what you did after choosing your round element to go on your Tim Holtz material. So I decided to watch again. After you chose your butterfly, I only remember sounds. Lol. So I think I fell asleep with you talking to me. I really love what you said about picking something up if it brought you joy, build off of it. The page will take you to the right place. I really loved the finished page and I’m so glad I went back and watched it while I was awake. Lol♥️♥️♥️

Love everything your artistic mind creates. I make cards (and have for years) in the vintage style, incorporating junk journal ideas. Even working on a card size format can be intimidating. Looking over at my card bases, bits and pieces of paper, material, inks, stamps, ephemera of all kinds can be very overwhelming. Which makes me slow crafter. Sometimes fussy cutting gets my mind going, working with my hands allows my mind to start creating. Thanks for sharing and inspiring.

I put some ephemera that I’ve made in some of them but rarely actually finish a page. You’ve given me inspiration and motivation. Right now I’m going to pick two of them. Lol so cute and chunky, she will need her own shelf 🙊. Oh what a cool find! I remember when you didn't like round elements, pleased you do now 😁👍 mainly because clocks and compasses are round lol. Oh the oxide effect is cool 😎. Lol viva le unexpected 🙈🙊. I like your version of the prose. I heard something shorter but similar message; "you don't need big steps, you only need baby steps as long as they're in the right direction" . I'm always over planning and it rarely works out the same. I'm sitting here right now just going with the flow and enjoying it more 👍😁. I LOVE this page 😍😍😍. Tfs and have a great day 💖💖💖

You can peal the top layer off the back. If you don't want it so thick. I do that with many different pieces of ephemra so that when I am making master board books the pages are not different thicknesses in different areas. I use playing cards, math and vocabulary flash cards. Pealing them apart so that I can use the front and the back in different areas. I have made over 50 master board books. Of all different sizes. So much fun!
