The “mic behind the amp” trick is a great one, it works especially well on small combos because it can capture some of the depth and body that you lose with just a front mic.
Hanging Tree sounded really really great on your setup! You don't shy away from the surprising amount of treble in Josh's live sound, I like that. I've had an early 70s VT-40 since my teenage years, currently in storage because of the pandemic. It has different speakers, and also two additional "sensitivity" rocker switches (they're very useful, a shame they've got rid of them on later versions). I've been trying for years to replicate the sounds I got out of it back when I could crank it regularly, with some success. I've been getting great Fender sounds out of a Kingsley Maiden+Crucible direct in setup (no physical cab for now), more easily than the Helix or the Kemper I tried. I wonder if one of the growing number of tube preamp pedal builders would want to tackle one of the VT preamp sections. I would buy that in a heartbeat.
The Catalinbread SFT does a pretty good job of approximating the VT/V4 sound for a solid state pedal, as does the sadly discontinued Tech21 VT Bass (I don’t know about the VT Bass DI they currently make since I don’t have any personal experience with it). Don’t be fooled by the latter’s name either, while it’s geared primarily towards an SVT tone the EQ section is flexible enough to suit guitar players too.
I’m about to record mine, and I’ve seen live QOTSA will mic them directly with a Sontronics Halo mic on one speaker per amp, they aren’t too expensive. Suppose to be great mics to handle any loud to low signal without folding. Also seen them live put plates behind them like a closed back. Makes me wonder for bass, if maybe pushing it up against the wall, or putting something on the back to let the bass bounce back forward would help and push them forward like a closed back… guess I’ll find out tomorrow! All I have is a SM57 and a SM7B, figured I track my Sky King and VT40 at the same time to track. And if the VT40 is not sounding good, keep the 57 up front and SM7B in the back for lows. And do overdubs till I get it right. If all else fails, I’ll bring the VT40 home to plug into my Two Notes and use a IR cab. But apparently live mic up, they have no issues at all! In the Eric V interview, he said live with mixing they were getting great results. But some reason in studio it was a problem, requiring this same method you are using. Set at 300hz it does carry a lot of low mids for sure. Crazy how bright they sound recorded, to what you hear in the room! I have to usually use an EQ pedal to have both that low end, and being the mids to highs up with a Boss GE7 upfront, and a PDF1x at the end pushing 2-3khz. Klon or DS1 helps as well to cut…but as the amp stands I do find it dark without cranking the treble, bright switch and using EQ or treble booster. I guess depends on tone you’re going for..as I believe EQ before the amp to cut some lows should work for an upper mids honky sound. Just maybe not that full sound you get in the room. Still strange how live with a PA no issue, or special treatment I’ve seen outside the mics I mentioned, and sometimes putting those plexi shield behind the amp.
Hahaha, no worries man. As long as you keep play Queens riffs, we will keep watching, because they are awesome. It is really a good sounding amp, not for just Queens. The other “hidden gem” of an amp is the Peavey Classic 50. Those are really awesome too and have a similar gain character to the Ampegs.
