This is all great. But there's one key thing you missed. On old samplers, specifically the sp1200, they had crazy limited sample time. Like a few seconds. So what they'd do, is speed up the record as fast as possible, to record enough of it to get the chops they needed. And then, on the sampler, they'd turn the pitch down, to slow the sample back down. But if you've ever done this you'll know that it creates a lot of artifacting. Mainly in the top end. Digital crunch and dirt that sounds nasty. So they would put a low pass on it, and filter out that noise so the sample still sounded clean. That combination actually creates a really dope lofi sound 👍🏻
Started doing this recently, I actually like the artifcact sound it creates sometimes
@@focusdecorating3637 yea sometimes it's dope. Especially for drums. I like doing this with snares if I need extra crunch out of it 👌🏻
@@Randuski Ahhh now theres a shout, thanks
@@focusdecorating3637 It's really variable on whether artifacts work, or not. It sounds fine on drums for the most part because they already have a lot of inherent noise, but sounds like garbage on pretty much anything else. Voices have sibilance, and keys are kinda janky sounding. I think it can work for certain song, but I bet the reaction back in the days was to automatically filter a lot out.
Also, there were filters on the outputs of most samplers like the SP1200. Not to mention how people filtered and EQed source material before it was even sampled. So, the low pass filters in things like the S950 were only one of the filters involved. Those artifacts are far less noticeable, or obnoxious coming off older equipement because they were trying at every stop to prevent them.
What I find weird is how people will just downsample things for artifacts, thinking it will give an old skool sound, but forget all the other stuff going on in the signal chain which made old beats sound great.
See I learned how to sample on the mp 60 with the big ass leather patch lol but then I also had the emax rack mount sampler so I had alot of sample time ,I always wanted the sp 1200 but I was in jr high so I ain't have the money
I just want to take the time to THANK YOU for being such an ambassador for this style of hip hop. I’m a 60’s baby and a 80’s Dj that made beats on a Roland 707 and a Roland R8, so no sampling. After 25+ yrs I decided to revisit my hobby, except I’m on Maschine. Your videos have really helped me figure out what lane I wanted to ride in, and here I am. For the first time this past weekend I let ears outside of mine hear my work and everybody luvs it. I think my favorite comment was “Refreshing”. All day my mind was blown 😲😲😲 that people like my work and I’m style sharpening my skills. Thanks again and God Bless!!!
Yeah Roc thanks, I also discovered that people like my beats, I had no idea before but once I started releasing them I realised that I have an audience ❤️, we only need to release music, people are the ones that will decide, not us.
I’m happy for you man. Keep working!
Did you purchase the Electronic ( Roland SN-R8-04 ) Rom Card for the Roland R8 to achieve the TR 808 sound?
Black Moon 'Enta Da Stage' LP contains some of my favourite examples of the low pass filter technique employed in 90s boom bap. Beatminerz had that deep, warm sound dialled in just right at the time
Soo true
@@rashaidanderson4403 Word....Beatminerz had that technique on lock!
Possibly the best example. My assumption is the Beatminerz used an S950 for the low pass filter.
@@cwpalacios1 exactly right. evil D speaks on his 950 in some random interview i found a couple years ago
@@cwpalacios1 I believe the Akai s950 and the sp1200 were used in tandem around that era (mind you the sp1200’s filters were good, but the “butterworth” (the s950’s low pass filter) has a distinct smoother tone)
Boom bap rules!
Yes sir
For life!!
Yes it does!
100%
💯 Feel like is a dying sub genre now though😔
i didn’t even know this was a thing. i do it because i don’t really know how to add bass lines to a beat, so i’d just use the bass line from the sample itself. i thought of it as some amateur technique i was doing, so i’m glad to know i wasn’t far off from the old school producers.
Many of us did that, if we're sampling. I never thought of it as amateur but necessary at times. Of course, other beatmakers, at times, will create a new bassline that goes with the sample, if the sampled bass is too muddy or whatever.
Sometimes, I like doing 4 layers.
The low end, two layers hp filtered panned left and right on top, and the original sample as is in the middle somewhere. A lot of fun😁
Thanks Marlow!
That’s always works
That's bass-icly how you do it. Nice one Marlow!!
Thank you 🙏🏼
That's a million dollar tip, about to start using it!
Marlow with the perfect tutorials, always. Your knowledge and experience.... we're lucky to have you on RUclips, man.
Thank you Chris, I think a lot have this knowledge, but not many are wiling to share it.
I totally agree.
After watching this video I figured out on Maschine that you can literally copy and paste your sample chops to another sound bank!!! My mind literally exploded!! Now I will use this technique on my boombap tracks! Thank you!
LOVE me the LP filter. :) it’s basically my go-to besides adjusting velocity. Really those are all I need usually, on a basic level. Excited for this video!!
The Low end theory is a great album
We appreciate you Marlow! Thank you for your time
Thanks for tuning in
I still have my Electrix Filter Factory.
Using a high pass with high res cracked up at a low frequency gives you that super low thump. Especially if your filter self oscillates.
💪🏽🤘🏽
Thnx for the info . I been asking this question for years!!!!
Thx Marlow! Love this series
Awesome, love the style of the video too!
J Dilla did this A LOT. He'd Low Pass the verse and then bring the highs back for the hook
This was done way before Dilla 😏
@@soundretardedyeah way before
Your videos been very very helpful. Thanks man 💯🙏🏾
Beautiful beat, Hermano and the horns were perfect. Love what you do. Bendiciones!
Thanks David ✌🏼
Thanks again for the interview Dawg!!! ANOTHER DOPE VIDEO FROM MARLOW !!! 🔥🔥🔥🔥
Thank you ✌🏼
Dope as always
i don't have a drum pad and i haven't made any beats with samples yet but watching these just to learn about old hip-hop is so dope, plus you always cookin fire
Thank you for tuning in ✌🏼
I mostly do synth based stuff these days but I still use this technique. I usually do more of a low mid thing where it's a resonant low pass thing with a high pass, as well. I'll then put sub bass at the very bottom. But still one of the best sounding things to me is the low pass on an upright bass and keys. Lovely stuff.
Thank you for sharing!! Stay true my dude!!
Dope video!! A technique I utilize very often!!
Awesome, man. I really should start working on my MPC one. Very inspiring. Thx
Great series!
Nice explanation and dope beat !
Love that style of hip hop
Keep doing your thing bro! 👊🏽
Great tutorial and dope cook up. I've been following you for a long time and you have always been a great help to me with the gems you drop, and although I knowledge of some of the things you discuss, I just really enjoy how you break it down. Keep doing your thing Marlow🙏🏾✊🏾
Thanks bro, big up to you and your channel, keep digging.
@@mpchead Appreciate it fam, thank you!🙏🏾✊🏾
Great video. I can honestly say that watching your content has inspired me. I have made about 20 tracks in the last few weeks. Salute
Time to put that beat tape out to the world, thanks for following up with the channel
I love this technique, and have used it, and will continue to use it. It's great. Excellent video, peace from Argentina! :)
peace to Argentina ✌🏼
The side chain compression kind of helps with the muddy bass when using the LPF. I also use it all the time on the entire group with drums to cut off the high end of the hats and snare. It depends on the sample of course but often times leaving the cutoff at around 5 kHz is a sweet spot for me if i don't want too much low end. The horn chops were really dope!!!
Thanks for sharing, it definitely will always be different depending on the sample.
Thanks for your tip! :) what you mean by that cutoff at 5kHz? For the LPF? :)
@@MHAOXE Yes, the LPF cutoff.
@@Stefch0o0 cheers man
I never hit the thumbs up on as many videos as i did on yours. You are obviously doing a great job educating us, plus you have an excellent ear. Keep it up.
I appreciate the words, thank you very much.
Dope tip, Knowledge Reigns Supreme
Preemo displays wonderful use of the low pass technique in Jerus's "Me or the Papes". You can literally hear the filter being adjusted real time during the transitions from hook to Verse.
Great Video BTW Sir💯
Love this technique
Thanks, such a great video. You make it look easy lad.
The hardest part is finding the sample
Thanks for the tip. I’ve been listening to some songs recently and was wondering how producers filter the samples for that low base sound. Now that I have a better gear I can try this method.
I'm a sucker for LPF. Even in DJing. Thanks for the amazing videos.
Man I always learn something new from your videos.
Glad to hear that
1st time on your channel 👀👍👍👍💪🏽💪🏽
Hiphop don't stop
Definitely a classic technique! We would filter out the highs AND the low end rumble from vinyl.
That’s good to know I was just thinking about this
Great video as always man
✌🏼thanks
yo Marlow im going to flip the same sample you used thank you for the inspiration.
Nice man. Good technique when you can’t be bothered making a bassline too easy and effective.
Easy Mo Bee and PAC was a great a team, LPF on Me Against The World all day and Thuglife records
great vid
Great ideas thank you
You're awesome, Marlow. Wish I could sample like you man. It's hard to even find anything good to sample. Seems like some people can sample a damn fart and make it sound good, meanwhile I'm struggling. You make awesome beats man.
Marlow✨
beat is fire!
Thank you
Nice! Thank you...it's always a pleasure to watch your videos. Like therapy. My other therapist is Tinez and he just posted. Today is a good day!
Tinez is the man to watch, love his videos
Marlow Digs - mpc head You guys both smash it with the style and content of your videos. Hands down some of my favourite channels on YT for hip hop and production.
Smooth
I'm pretty sure Ski Beatz used this technique a lot. It's very prominent throughout his mid to late 90s work.
Dead Presidents beat
Great vídeo ma dude!!
✌🏽
Stakes Is High is the first thing that crosses my mind when it comes to this technique!
Large Professor on Nas' Halftime track "92. And Main Source Fakin The Funk from the same year. That's an early example of filtering. He used the Akai S950. As most did lol. Or the S900. Same sound.
Boom bap por vida!!
Dead Presidents obviously has a killer LPF. Ski has a killer video showing exactly how he did it.
Once I figured that Pete Rock was the one, in my opinion, who had done it alot I figured I would do the same. It was pretty cool. video's pretty cool
Nothing beats digging for records I got so menny memories from being in Old store basement looking it's part of the culture and for those who never experienced it u missed allot
That LPF trick infested my production and never left since the 90’s. Still extra effective and a very common trick that most og producers still use til this day.
The new school just put the filter over the entire track hahah same diff
Edit: Marlow made a great point about muddy samples after the filter is applied. To reduce mud for LPF always roll off 25-45hz (where you cut is a preference as it could alter what your after but will always cut the mud) in the eq of your choice. Bonus points if you create a track template to use when you want to do this trick.
Lowpass filter and hiphop goes like bread and butter lol. Both new and old school here
Was resonance ever applied?
@@rwesreal of course , that’s how you get the extra harmonics fam ;)
@@Thedrumsthebass is it? How? Resonance on a lpf just boosts the cut off frequency. It doesn’t add harmonics.
@@benhall2235 try that again
Large pro is considered by many to be the first to use the technique you had to have him in the thumbnail
He was. Listen to Breaking Atoms. He showed Pete Rock and Primo that technique.
I remember watching Ski Beatz explain how he used this technique on Jay-Z's "Dead Presidents" record.
2000 degrees 🔥
If you're using an HP filter on the original layer then you should check the polarity on the bass layer because the filtering tends to invert the signal and the bass sound may sound weak or hollow. Also you can mono the Bass signal to be more consistent in large PAs
love this, can you make a video on how you set it up for when you perform beats? either live or on youtube like this
I don't do performance unfortunately, I just stay in the studio making beats.
@@mpchead when I mean performance I mean how you perform them on your videos too, like it looks like you have tracks on pads but I can’t tell for sure
Hi-Pass and LowPass filters, all day!
Smoooove
I used to do the same but now I like more playing my own bass melodies. But still interesting 👍🏽
Dope Beat.
I think some pointers on the use of the filters resonance within this technique would have been nice. But well captured otherwise - simple and effective trick that has been around for decades and is a staple of the OG sound
Back in the early 90's it was all about the S950. Beatminerz, Premo, Pete Rock, Easy Mo Bee to mention just a few. Here's a little videoclip from a guy named Peter Simkin who used the S950 Lowpass filter in this video. ruclips.net/video/aVTPr8XeGH4/видео.html
Simkin is true MPC Wizard and makes some of the dopest old school beats you can listen these days!

That update is 🔥🔥🔥🔥 done reignited some fires

What’s up Marlow. Question for you: are the drum packs on your bandcamp royalty free (Crunchy Bits and Dusty Pack)? You’ve been a huge help as I learn this new style of producing. Much love.
Yes they are, and I'll upload more next month.

Low pass filter on the S950 was a massive game changer for me in the early 90s. Just starting to get into that idea of using filters and EQs, having all your samples in the same key.. still love that layered samples sound. Changed how I *listened* for samples too. Great video. 🙏🏼
Really wanna get my hands on a 950
@@mpchead I had one back in the day. The sound was phenomenal. Especially the low pass filter. Used it with a MPC60II (which had no filter). Eventually moved on to an ASR10 (cleaner but very underrated).
Hey what’s the tune at 1:17 also great find on this recommendation
can u teach to make drumz sound like nwa, cypres hill, reverb drum sounds, like "insane in the brain" drums
Hi Marlow your videos are very helpful! one question what head phones are you using? i would like to research the, i need some new ones for recording with the MPC. Thanks!
Using beyerdynamics 990
Dope where did you get those horns?
You can utilize a send track for this technique
Marlow, do you have a video that explains how to duplicate your sample track/pattern to another track?
You should be able to just copy and paste it
On the mains screen of the mpc you'll see a pencil tool in front of the track row, use that to copy the track. You can also do the same thing for the Program. I don't think I have a video on that sorry.
Coolest fuckin accent I’ve ever heard, the whole time I’m just wondering where he picked it up
I’m totally lost. How do I add a low pass filter from my MPC live 2 settings?
What was the second track in the examples?
💯💯💯💯💯💯💯🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥
Hey I tried doing this technique but when I copied the track on to a new track. The tracks didn't work independently. I added the high pass to the first on and it added it to the 2nd. What am I doing wrong?
...but i LIKE that muddy bass sound
Marlow,i tried to this is in the MPC One. I tried to create another program using the same samples and it wouldn't allow me to apply a low pass only to the new program. It conflicted with the existing one. is there anw to bypass this?
Did you duplicate the program?
Surprised you haven’t mentioned the firmware update in a video yet.
Do you do any gain staging in your DAW after you export from the MPC? Or do you just adjust the volume on individual tracks as you see fit? Your mixdowns are great, but cant tell if you just select good drums and samples or are doing some mastering in the backend.
I don't export anything, I mix everything in the mpc and cross my fingers. To me it's all about levels and the master outputs.
@@mpchead That’s interesting. So the MPC has built in effects like limiters and compressors on the Master channel? I’ve only ever used Ableton
