Man, very helpful video, he took it step from step , from unboxing checking for the hardware , to meticulously explain everything step of the build , with true patience , not rushing the project which made me feel comfortable doing this myself. Very well explained and done my friend. Many thumbs up. 👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻.. TRUE PROFESSIONAL. You have the qualities of a teacher.
Question, if you have 6x6 posts, instead of 4x4 posts, do you recess the hinges more towards the center of the 6x6 post? Thus, instead of drilling 1 1/4” in from the edge of the post for the J bolts to the 4x4 post, would the new drill hole for the J bolts be 3 1/4” in from the edge of a 6x6 post since my post will be a 6x6 post. I’m referring to time stamp 3:59.
You are one of the few that mention outward swinging gates.. Thank you... I usually have to build a little trim frame on those.. What do you do for no gap?
this is great just what i was looking for but have 2 gates any vidio on that 1 is 72" can be smaller if need be the small gate would make up whats left for the main in and out gate
I was trying to make a gate with galvanized post and wood picket boards but Home Depot and Lowe’s don’t have everything I need so I’m just going to to have to do all wood again
There is no reason why you cannot add fence boards to the inside. You will have to trim the two boards on outer edges of the gate to fit depending on how much clearance you have between the frame and post. You don't want the boards to interfere with the gate closing or opening. Also trim around the latch arm unless you want to purchase longer bolts to hold it to the frame. I would install the pickets on the outside of the gate, close the gate, install the inside pickets except for the ones on the outer edges and use a couple of scrap pieces to see how close to the edge you can install the boards on the inside and trim accordingly. Good Luck
This is designed for wood applications, but could possibly accomodate if the metal was a heavy enough guage, but if overtightened could bend the metal.
So they are only long enough for a 4x4 post. Sometimes I see people who just recess the bolt in the back of a 6x6 and it actually gives it a cleaner look because the bolt is mostly hidden on the backside. However you can purchase longer ones from most hardware stores.
If you drill out the brick with a 5/8” concrete drill bit and recess the j-bolt into the brick and maybe use epoxy to hold the recessed j-bolts secure that can work.
I have mixed them and they look fine. It depends on your taste. There is no functional or technical reason not to mix them. They just have different texture and color. If that doesn't bother you, go right ahead. :-)
f the framing is on the inside of the fence, then how do we open this gate from the outside? I am asking because I don't see any latch on the outside. Please let me know asap! Thank you.

Yes. If you want your gate to open inward. Follow this video step by step. It you want it to open outward like I did and messed up my posts following these directions - do NOT follow these directions lol. I feel like this guy owes me a post. Smh
What I mean is when u want it to open outward because it’s a bolt u and not a hinge gate the cedar will hit ur post and not open all the way. I was 1.25 inches on the other side (like he said). Can’t get any closer than that. Regardless it’s sturdy just not for outward opening gates unless u want some odd looking space so the cedar can clear when u open outward. Or if u want ur cedar on the inside LoL! Look silly as hell from the street.

Yes, very helpful. I especially like that he explains why certain placement decisions are made.
Thanks for the slow methodical step-by-step process. "Thumbs up"
really good video! love the step by step and explanation!
Thank you for a very detailed and clear demonstration
Good Video, thanks for sharing ! Looks simple enough to work ... wondering now if you have a Gatemate for fences with metal posts ... ?
nice job young man....very helpful

Excellent product, highly recommend. 🙏
Great job thank you for taking your time to help others .

This is very cool, and your information was well delivered!!
BEST VIDEO OUT HERE!! Thank you!
I wish I watched the video first I would have purchased this product for sure. Very good step by step video.
Good job 👏 my amigo,,muy bonito trabajo,,
Great video. Very helpful
Awesome product 👍
Kool I couldn't do it better, now I have knowledge very easy to understand. Bravos 👏 due
Don't you allow a gap between each plank for expansion? Great video.
this is great just what i was looking for but have 2 gates any vidio on that 1 is 72" can be smaller if need be the small gate would make up whats left for the main in and out gate
Amazing video. Thank you so much boss!!!
Good stuff buddy. I'll be using this information to make a double gate.
Hi Norman, this is awesome and gives tips for tomorrow installing similar gate (fortress gate) from Bunnings tomorrow. Thanks.
I was trying to make a gate with galvanized post and wood picket boards but Home Depot and Lowe’s don’t have everything I need so I’m just going to to have to do all wood again
This was a great video, and I'll tell you why a little later.
My gate mate came with eye bolts. What are they for and how to use them?
Very helpful, thank you!
What about steel posts?
Could you add pickets to both sides so one side isn’t ugly frame without obstruction to the swing or door?
There is no reason why you cannot add fence boards to the inside. You will have to trim the two boards on outer edges of the gate to fit depending on how much clearance you have between the frame and post. So when you measure 1 1/4” for the hinge bolt do you drill the center of your hole on 1 1/4 or is the hole inside or outside of the 1 1/4. ?
Fantastic for the money!
How would you install it on metal posts?
This is designed for wood applications, but could possibly accomodate if the metal was a heavy enough guage, but if overtightened could bend the metal.
Are the bolts long enough to go through a 6x6 post?
So they are only long enough for a 4x4 post. Sometimes I see people who just recess the bolt in the back of a 6x6 and it actually gives it a cleaner look because the bolt is mostly hidden on the backside. However you can purchase longer ones from most hardware stores.
@@norris43 perfect thanks. I actually like the idea of drilling out a larger hole on the back side and recess the bolt to hid it.
Hi Norman, Can you do the same process for a gate with brick block posts. Appreciate advise, thanks.
If you drill out the brick with a 5/8” concrete drill bit and recess the j-bolt into the brick and maybe use epoxy to hold the recessed j-bolts secure that can work.
Would mixing a cedar gate with a pressure treated fence look good? Or should you stick to one sort of wood for the fence and gate?
One sort
I have mixed them and they look fine. It depends on your taste. There is no functional or technical reason not to mix them. They just have different texture and color. If that doesn't bother you, go right ahead. :-)
What color are those board
will this sort of metal frame rust over time? Would it be better to just use wood instead without the steel frame?
Wood rots and steel rusts. Either one is gonna need to be maintained... Steel won't sag...
How much for a 54 inch set?
How does the gate open from the outside? You didn’t show the complete hardware needed for an entrance gate
home depot has the gate that has latch that opens from outside model#AG36-3
f the framing is on the inside of the fence, then how do we open this gate from the outside? I am asking because I don't see any latch on the outside. Please let me know asap! Thank you.
Hello, we recommend the EZ Gate Latch, or simply attach a string to the latch and feed it through a small hole in the post
What if I have 6x6 posts?
So the metal never gets bolted together??
Correct, the 2 2x4s hold the metal frame to the desired width.
very helpful, ty
can i use this for my trailer ramp?
Well done!
Thank you my good Sir…….
i cant find gatemate any where
Thank you so much!
What size are the J-bolts?
They are 5/8" x 6", but you can purchase a long length of needed.
Very helpful.
Yep thanks bud I have a friend that has dogs in their gate broken thank you
What is part number where you buy it
Hi, the standard one is 7010003, and wide is 7020003. They can be purchased through www.gatehardwarestore.com
I think the reason the gate sags is the post starts to get old they rott and move
They sag well before rot forms. Corners are not held at 90 degrees therefore they sag, turning into a parallelogram.
perfect thank you
Where to buy
Hello, you can order those online at gatehardwarestore.com, our retail online division. Thank you!
Thank you .
website has no prices in the pictures of products, so you can not buy online, bad start.....

He’s says in beginning outward swing go to other post.
@DdDten negative the cedar hits. Wood. Tried it. It’s an inward opening gate. Try it lol. Doesn’t matter. Switched it to open inward.

Not, I don’t like it,
Try to do it with Woodglut plans :)
