What is a constant mesh gearbox?

A constant mesh gearbox is a type of transmission in which all forward gear pairs remain engaged. ... The constant mesh gearbox is a type of manual transmission in which the gears are meshed or fixed to their positions.
What is the advantage of using constant mesh gearbox?
Advantages of Constant Mesh Gearbox:
1Contsant Mesh Gearbox are quiter because helical or herringbone gears can be used in this gearbox instead of spur gears. Since the gears are engaged by dog clutches, if any damage occurs while engaging the gears, the dog unit members get damaged and not the gear wheels
Why is it called constant mesh gear box?
As the name indicates that all the gears on the layshaft and main shaft are in constant mesh with each other and the dog clutch decides the transmission of the required gear to be engaged. For the smooth engagement of dog clutches, it is required that the speed of main shaft gears and the dog clutch must be equal.
What is the problem in constant mesh gear box?
The problem with a sliding-mesh gearbox is when changing gears, the speeds of the input and output shafts must be matched first. Otherwise, the sliding dog teeth of the meshing gearwheels do not align, and they “crash” into one another. That is why this type of gearbox is alternatively referred to as a 'crash box'.
