- Let me take you guys to the Four Great Lakes of Kumaon hills in Uttarakhand called the Lake District. they are Nainital, Bhimtal, Naukuchital & Sat Tal.
1. Bhimtal Lake - This lake is the largest lake in the Kumaon hills in Uttarakhand. It was named after Bhima from Mahabharata. It is said that Pandavas visited Bhimtal during their exile and that's when this lake was formed by Bhima. It is believed that Bhimtal Lake was more popular than the famous Naini Lake in Nainital. It was in 1841 when the British made Bhimtal a tourist destination. Today also Bhimtal lake is famous for its boating experience. There is an island in the middle of the lake that houses a famous aquarium. There is also a Lord Shiva temple here.
2. Naukuchiatal Lake - This is the deepest lake of all the 4 lakes in Kumaon hills. It is 175 m deep. This lake has 9 corners and hence the name Naukuchiatal. The 9 corners make the lake very unique to look at. People come here for boating and water sports such as Parasailing, Zorbing, Zip-lining etc. Locals believe that doing the parikrama of this lake gives blessings of Lord Brahma.
3. Sat tal Lake - This is basically a bunch of 7 lakes combined together. Hence, the name is Sat tal. All the lakes are bounded by a curtain of thick forest of Oaks & Pine trees.
