      I truly adore your Work, Terri. This Idea with the Lasagne beds ist ingenious: to Bring soil on top of a Stone bed. Perhaps i shall Join you one day, because my neighbors Here in hungary are behaving with disrespect. For me IT IS better to be autonomous with english (although i have to practise a Lot all the medicinal names and plant names). I Wish you a Lot of luck with your Task of Humus creating. How lovely! With my best wishes for you and your beloved ones. Katharina

I always love the way you "show us" rather than just "tell us" - its so much more informative than presenting us with a "fait accompli" pinterest style pictures. Your land looks healthy. It’s interesting to listen to how you are learning to read the conditions to plant and create. I’m reminded of Derek Jarman and his rock garden in Dungeness. Somethings grew some were burnt etc. Beth charro has a superb dry garden in Elmstead and she was friends with Derek. The lasagna garden is such a good idea and Geoff who you mentioned is a great inspiration. Thank you.

    Yep hugelkultur.... speaking of balcony... you could put a couple of logs and wood chips and other organic material in a storage bin ... I have five bins like that now... they’ve been working out great... I’m making more... and I’m raising them up on concrete blocks and two by fours so the tops are at tabletop height... I’m also experimenting with farmer Leon self wicking containers ... I have collected all the materials for those except the actual bins and soil ... in a couple weeks I will probably do four more and will slowly build from there... but both of these are great for balconies... especially the farmer Leon self wicking containers ... depending on the size of your balcony of course ... most people could put a couple of them on their balconies

    I'm wondering if due to the wind and salt you might consider planting evergreens as a backdrop shelterbelt? It's so interesting to learn about lasagna layering. Fascinating to see how this composes down into a rich ecosystem ready for planting. Have a blessed solstice dear Terri. Your pups are adorable. Have a lovely weekend.

    • @DanusIrishHerbGarden
      @DanusIrishHerbGarden  4 года назад +3

      Ha ha! We ran before we could walk hence we are still putting in shelter beds. Our problem is that there is no depth to the soil in many places and we have lost a big shrub due to one of the winter storms so it is an ongoing struggle. A blessed Solstice to you too.

    Hi Terri, so glad you have discovered Jeff Lawton, he is an incredible man full of knowledge and an amazing organic vege grower, his methods are simple and it’s a pity more people don’t follow him . Good luck with both the Hugelkulture and lasagne growing - I use both methods and both produce abundant crops . Just one thing to be aware of is Hugelkulture is a German idea from hundreds of years ago. Regards Pete

      @@DanusIrishHerbGarden thanks Terri. It’s a difficult year to say the least. We normally have really good yields but this year we have “la Nina “ a weather event which creates a very wet cooler summer here in Australia. At this late stage of the season I have dozens & dozens of tomatos but very few red ones. Garden practices either good or bad pale into insignificance when “ Mother Nature steps in . Hopefully it will improve a little and Ill still reap a late crop. Good luck with yours. Regards Pete

      @@peterreidy6094 We get "el Ninio" now and again which brings very grey skies and wind and rain. I thought it came up from the Gulf of Mexico on the Atlantic Gulf Stream!!?? And you get something similar in Australia. Same thing happens here, things grow but do not ripen. It's a bummer. By the way, have you seen Bill Mollison's Whale story? I think it is on YT and well worth a watch. 😀

    • @peterreidy6094
      @peterreidy6094 3 года назад

      @@DanusIrishHerbGarden hi Terri , I don’t believe I have seen Bills whale story but I have seen other online info he has put out . We also get El Niño and when we do it often means drought and subsequent bushfires - pretty much always a terrible combination - temps often into the high 40’s C during ElNino . Like I said earlier, when Mother Nature takes control it doesn’t matter what you do in the garden, she will decide the outcome .
      Watching you shovel loads of seaweed onto your garden made me very envious as seaweed gathering in OZ, well here in Victoria where I live, it is banned ie not legal. I mainly use wood chips and horse manure + all the branches, sticks and logs I can find. My Hugel beds are almost 5 yrs old now an$ the soil is beautiful - I’m quite proud . Anyway I better go, I apologise for rambling on . Kind regards Pete.

    I've been making lasagne beds for five years now, the soil is amazing. It's such a good use of cardboard and grass. It's lovely to see you building one. That's very interesting about the lemon trees growing in the huggel? Bed. What hedging tolerates salt winds? Keep up the good work😊

    • @DanusIrishHerbGarden
      @DanusIrishHerbGarden  4 года назад +1

      The lemon tree in the Hugel bed was above the snow line in the Austrian alps!!!. The hedging used in this coastal area is hawthorn, Olearea, Griselinia and Escallonia. Alder trees also grow well.
